The Slender Waist-Chapter 145 - 109: Intimate Friends in the Boudoir
Feng Yun held the letter in her hand for a long time without speaking, her heart thudding wildly for quite a while before she finally got up to wash and dress.
The fog outside the manor was thick and white.
The start of winter had come, and the air had begun to turn cold.
On the nearby field ridges, villagers were heading to work, and upon seeing Feng Yun, Doctor Yao’s Mrs. Wang greeted her with a beaming smile.
"Have you seen the chicks hatch, Village Chief’s wife?"
Feng Yun was startled for a moment before she remembered the eggs she had given them last time, which they had said they were going to use to hatch chicks, and she grew curious.
"Have they hatched?"
Mrs. Wang excitedly said, "Do you want to come and see?"
Feng Yun nodded and followed her over.
Their homes were less than thirty feet apart, making the visit quite convenient.
The gate of the Yao Family’s home was a bamboo fence, with vegetables planted on both sides, but Mrs. Wang clearly lacked experience, and the seedlings were not doing well, prompting Feng Yun to offer some guidance.
Mrs. Wang took the advice to heart.
"For the next crop, I will do as the Village Chief’s wife suggests..."
Doctor Yao was busy inside the house and startled when he saw Feng Yun. He hurriedly patted the medicine ash from his clothes, stood up, and clasped his hands together, "Village Chief, please take a seat."
Feng Yun smiled, "Doctor Yao, no need for formalities."
Mrs. Wang playfully scolded him, "We’re neighbors, old Yao, why must you be so formal? You’re making the Village Chief’s wife uncomfortable."
Then she pulled Feng Yun toward a straw nest piled up in the corner, "Come, come look, they’re inside..."
Feng Yun hummed in response. She intended to turn back to pay respect to Doctor Yao, but caught him breathing a long sigh of relief. Seeing her notice, he gave an anxious and embarrassed smile.
His expression... was as if he had done something guilty.
Doctor Yao had never been like this before.
An upstanding doctor—what was there for him to act like this?
After looking at the chick’s nest, Feng Yun quietly asked Mrs. Wang, "Has Doctor Yao been acting strangely lately?"
Mrs. Wang was taken aback, "Strange? Not at all..."
Feng Yun made a noncommittal noise and stopped asking, but Mrs. Wang, unwilling to let it go, clung to her and asked anxiously, "Did old Yao do something wrong to me?"
Feng Yun was slightly taken aback, but then laughed.
"Sister-in-law, what are you thinking?"
Mrs. Wang gave a sideways glance, "Don’t blame me for speaking my mind, miss. You tell me, all those beauties in your manor—just like the ones in paintings; how could our old Yao not be tempted..."
Pfft!
Feng Yun said, "You are truly wronging Doctor Yao in this case. He has always been circumspect when visiting for treatment, never prying or looking more than needed, very honest indeed."
Mrs. Wang countered, "I’m not so sure about that. The last couple of times he came back from visiting your home, he looked distracted, as though some beauty bewitched him..."
The past couple of times Doctor Yao had visited the manor, it was to treat Chunyu Yan.
Chunyu Yan might be beautiful, but she wore a mask. Doctor Yao was not so inexperienced to be distracted by an aristocrat wearing a mask, would he?
Unless... Chunyu Yan herself had put pressure on him...
Feng Yun felt there was something fishy going on, but since Doctor Yao wouldn’t confess, it wasn’t her place to pry further. After a few moments of casual conversation with Mrs. Wang and checking on her own crops, she went back to prepare for receiving people at the Shiguan Dock.
Two days later, she set out before dawn.
Xing Bing had put together a cart pulled by oxen, bringing along about ten men, accompanying her on her journey.
When Ye Chuang heard she was going to Shiguan County to receive someone, he selected a few elite men to follow, taking no chances.
Jin and Qi were at war, but no matter the era, there were always some people capable of carving out safe passages even in war-torn areas. Besides, Weng Li was certainly someone who could travel safely within Qi; the main concern was about trouble from Jin’s side...
That’s why he had sent Feng Yun to receive them.
Should any trouble arise once they reached Shiguan County’s dock, it would then be Feng Yun’s own affair.
-
Shiguan Dock.
The previously bustling dock was now eerily quiet.
When Feng Yun arrived, it was just getting light. She sat in the ox cart while the Ge brothers scoped around, finding nothing amiss.
The mist by the river was thick.
When Weng Li’s boat docked, it was immediately inspected by the Beiyong Army.
Feng Yun watched quietly as Weng Li gestured toward her, prompting a few of the Beiyong soldiers to glance back at her ox cart. They then thoroughly searched the boat again before allowing it to proceed.
"Miss, I hope you haven’t been waiting too long." Weng Li approached with clasped hands, dressed like a merchant.
Feng Yun lifted the curtain to look at the woman beside Weng Li, holding a child’s hand, her head wrapped in a green cloth. After thanking Weng Li, Feng Yun’s eyes reddened, and she called out to the woman.
"Yun’e..."
Kong Yun’e hesitated for a moment, then softly responded:
"Ayun?"
Feng Yun got out of the cart, opened her arms wide, and embraced her deeply, as if reuniting after a long separation. They held each other for a long moment before she pretended to wipe away tears, then looked down at the child beside her.
