The Sole Prince of the Fallen Kingdom-Chapter 22. The Sole Prince of the Fallen Kingdom
Chapter 22 - 22. The Sole Prince of the Fallen Kingdom
DIG
DIG
"Haah..."
DIG
DIG
"Haah... Just A Little More..." Aiden muttered in between his long, exhausted breaths from continuously digging a grave to bury Elsie's body.
His hands were bleeding due to the persistent grip on a tree branch he was using as a shovel to dig.
His Grip was clenching tighter and tighter with each up and down motion he was performing.
His fingernails were covered in dirt, and he had minor cuts due to having removed the dig-out dirt with his hands.
Aside from some tears here and there, the Servant's Clothes Aiden wore were still in decent condition, though there was obvious dirt on them.
"Hooh... It's done!" Aiden said as he raised his arm to wipe the frozen sweat off his forehead.
...However, the action just covered his face in dirt as well.
"See, Elsie. I dug you a resting place. Now, you don't have to live in this frost storm. Are you Happy?"
After lightly dropping the stick nearby, he approached Elsie, whose body was frozen in ice. She lay some distance away with a smile on her face.
"You still have a smile on your face, even after death, and on the other hand, there's me who..." Aiden muttered under his breath in a low, self-loathing voice.

From the moment his memories surfaced, he was unsure whether it was right of him to-
Slap
Slap
Aiden suddenly slapped himself twice.
'This is not the time for self-deprecation. I should focus more on actual things. These thoughts won't get me anywhere.'
"...Let's get you a proper rest, Elsie."
With a sad smile, Aiden lifted Elsie's body, which had become highly light due to the complete blood loss, and carefully placed her in the grave that he had dug the previous night, working non-stop.
"Yosha!" Gently placing Elsie's body into the grave, he started talking to her as if she was still able to answer his questions.
"So, did you like this resting place, Elsie?"
"..."
"Ohh... I'm Sorry, Elsie! I made you lie on the dirt. Just gimme a minute... I should have something in my magic bag... hmm..."
"...There's Nothing."
"..."
Aiden started looking for anything nearby in a fluster that could serve as a 'Bed' for Elsie to rest in.
He gathered everything he thought would comfort her: Snowy Grass, Broad Leaves, Moss, Lichen, and a small pelt of an animal; and placed them around her.
"It's much better now, isn't it, Elsie? ...Now, you can rest peacefully."
"I don't have anything special to place here right now, but Elsie..." He covered up Elsie's Grave and continued, "I have heard that putting anything related to a dragon at one's tombstone protects and provides them a sense of calmness after death."
Aiden said while putting the wooden Dragon that he bought that horrific night as a "tombstone" at her grave.
"So, I hope this doll will accompany you till I become strong enough to bring you and Father back."
Growl~
"..."
"...I should eat something."

"Nom~ Nom~" After cleaning my hands with wind (because the water kept freezing), I chewed the mango bun that I had in my bag while holding one out of the four cocoa sticks I had left in my bag.
"Iven haghatr shis moch teime, hoos et syeell o destiie?!" (Even after this much time, how's it still so tasty?!)
I gobbled down the entire bun hastily, followed by ...2 Cocoa Sticks in quick succession.
Now see, I have an excuse for that.
I just couldn't resist my hunger and taste buds, which were used to eating as much as they liked in the castle.
My body had already adapted to that lifestyle, and the memories of sleeping famished from when I was an orphan fueled my hunger even more.
'I have already eaten two of them, so it shouldn't matter if I ate one more-'
[Host!]
"Hup!" I was startled at the sudden voice in my head, but it was just Char.
"Hoo~" Exhaling in relief, I continued, "You scared me, Char."
[Well, at least, I managed to stop you from extinguishing your rations. It was worth it.]
"You didn't do shit! I still have to secure food somehow; you just made it worse by irritating me!"
[Ohh... Watch your language, Host. That's not how a prince should speak.]
"My Apologies, Miss Char- But hey, why am I apologizing to you? You can already hear my thoughts!"
[Am I not even someone to whom you think you should show some respect?]
"Shut Up, You Useless System!"
[I am not a Useless System; I have told you that countless times!]
"Yeah, and ~~~~~"
[~~~~~~~]
"~~~~~~~"
[~~~~~~~]
"~~~~~~~"
[~~~~~~~]
"~~~~~~~"
.
.
.
"Haha... Seriously... You are such a..." Wiping the corner of my eyes, I continued with a hearty laugh, "Useless system."
[So, feeling any better now? Did you get your head cleared up a bit? If not, I can still ramble on.]
"No. Stop. Please. I got it." I gathered myself together as Char was terrible with lifting someone's mood. Like really, really terrible.
[Are you mocking my abilities, host? Then, here's another joke to prove you wrong!]
"I told you to Shut Up!"
[Too late! Analysis of your last battle... Complete.]
[Host, your will to live in the last battle was... let's say, questionable.]
"Shut up."
[No! Like, even a non-living system like me was mocking you after the countdown ended.]
"Are you mocking me?!"
[Yes, I am. Consider it as a retribution for your words that you uttered a couple moments earlier.]
"You-! Haven't you become a lot more annoying since I regained my memories?"
[I agree that I have become better in all aspects since you unlocked your magic and memories, but being called annoying by someone like you... heh, What an irony.]
"Great. Just Great. I mean, the Last thing keeping me sane is the very thing that drives me insane."
"Like, why does it have to be you who is standing between me and absolute loneliness? God, this is so pathetic!"
I was grateful towards Char and her useless, annoying banter a lot, but when she is acting in such a way ...Urghhh, it irks me so much!
I just cannot, for the life of me, thank her in a straight way.
[Well, at least you acknowledged my importance in your life, so I will let it slide for now, but don't think that I will ever forget what you said!]
'God, she has evolved from a Useless system to an annoying useless system.' I thought in my head, forgetting for a moment that Char could hear my thoughts.
[That's not a great image of me in your mind, but I'll consider that an improvement. Don't I have a big heart, Host?]
"Sigh~ Yes. Yes, you have. So, now..." I receded with a sigh and shifted the topic of our conversation.
"Show me my status, Char."
[...Alright.]

As I saw that status, that title stood out the most.
It reminded me of who I am now and what should be my purpose moving ahead, which I forgot for a moment in that banter with Char.
