The Supreme Soldier in the City-Chapter 157: Perfect Coordination
Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Perfect Coordination
James Brown opened the door and immediately saw Helen Wilson and Sarah Grandy, which secretly relieved him. Although he had been fiercely scolding Sarah Grandy, he was still somewhat worried about her. This girl might have caused some trouble, but at least she was good to him. He could not just watch as she ran into trouble, which is why he had made that call to Helen Wilson.
But to his surprise, Helen Wilson was now standing there with a stern face, pushing James Brown inside and promptly pulling out handcuffs. "James Brown, you’re implicated in a rape case. I’m taking you in for questioning. If you dare to resist, that’s resisting arrest and assaulting an officer. If you don’t want to add to your charges, you’d better cooperate," she said.
These words from Helen Wilson made James Brown’s eyes widen. "Officer Monaghan, are you kidding me? When have I ever raped anyone?"
Helen Wilson pointed at Sarah Grandy and said, "There’s your troublemaker. With the victim’s testimony, do you think I lack evidence to arrest you?"
"Sarah Grandy?" James Brown frowned and turned to Sarah Grandy.
Feeling guilty under James Brown’s gaze, Sarah Grandy instinctively averted her eyes. Then, thinking of how this detestable uncle had refused to take her in at all, she felt a surge of resentment and blurted out, "It was you. You just raped me."
Helen Wilson, with a surge of anger, said to James Brown, "What do you have to say for yourself now?"
James Brown rubbed his nose and replied, "I’ve got nothing to say."
Helen Wilson was taken aback; she had expected James Brown to say something in his defense. Since he wasn’t going to explain, she thought it was a good opportunity to deal with him. She took out the handcuffs and said, "Then just be quiet."
James Brown squinted his eyes at Helen Wilson and asked, "Really going to cuff me?"
"What, you think you wouldn’t be cuffed after committing such a big crime?"
"Alright, alright, cuff me then. I’ve never been cuffed by these silver bracelets before," said James Brown with a grin, extending his hands.
Seeing James Brown’s nonchalant demeanor, Helen Wilson grew even more irritated. With a couple of clicks, she handcuffed his hands and said, "Humph, you jerk, you’re going to be locked up for at least five to seven years."
James Brown held up his hands and closely inspected the handcuffs. "Officer Monaghan, where did you buy these handcuffs? Get me a pair when you go back."
"Where did I buy them?" Helen Wilson, irritated by James Brown’s nonsensical talk, replied crossly, "These are specially issued for police officers; you think they can be bought just like that?"
"Can’t buy them, huh? How about you gift this pair to me and then just say you lost them? You can get another pair back at the station."
James Brown was driving Helen Wilson to the brink of madness. Glaring at him, she barked, "You jackass, you’re involved in a rape case, do you understand? Rape! It’s a serious crime with severe punishment."
Helen Wilson was warning James Brown, trying to scare him a bit. But James Brown still spoke with a teasing smile, "No problem, over there I get food and shelter, plus I can work out. It’s all good. I couldn’t even go there if I wanted to."
Helen Wilson was fuming at James Brown’s words, and Sarah Grandy also stared at this unbelievable uncle. She had intended to frame James Brown to vent her anger, but now it seemed he wasn’t the least bit scared. Her plan had completely failed.
Originally, Sarah Grandy just wanted to get back at him and didn’t actually mean to get James Brown arrested by the police. If Helen Wilson were to really take James Brown away, she would have to admit that it was all just a prank. Then, feeling grateful, he would let her stay. But now, it was clear that her plan had once again fallen through.
"Officer Monaghan is really nice to me, even giving me a pair of police handcuffs to play with. Hey, give me the keys for a moment; I want to see how to unlock these," James Brown said cheerfully, flicking his cuffed hands at Helen Wilson.
Helen Wilson glanced at Sarah Grandy, who was pouting helplessly, having no idea how to deal with James Brown.
"Are handcuffs really that fun? Sarah Grandy, tell me the truth, did he or did he not rape you?"
At this point, Sarah Grandy, no longer interested in the charade, reluctantly said, "No, this damn uncle just wouldn’t take me in and tried to make me leave. I just wanted you to scare him for me."
Helen Wilson found an excuse to back down, glaring at Sarah Grandy and said, "This is nonsense. How can you make up such a thing? It’s lucky it was me. If it had been someone else, they would have taken James Brown straight to the station. Even if you recanted later, it would still be considered slander and defamation, which is a crime."
Sarah Grandy muttered, "I know, I know."
James Brown watched the two women’s performance, pretending to be clueless and eagerly said, "Officer Monaghan, hurry up and let me try those keys."
Looking at James Brown’s shameless behavior, Helen Wilson really wanted to smack him. She’d met shameless people before, but she had never met anyone quite as shameless as him. Angrily, she snarled, "Stay put," as she unlocked the handcuffs and quickly stowed them, fearing James Brown would actually take them to play.
James Brown pursed his lips and said, "Officer Monaghan, you’re really stingy. It’s off-hours now; what’s the big deal about playing with your handcuffs? It’s not like I’m playing with your gun."
Helen Wilson said irritably, "Go away, you’d better not mess with me, because once I cuff you, there’s no way you’re getting released."
"I’m such a law-abiding citizen, how could I possibly get caught by you?" James Brown gave Helen a meaningful look and said, "Officer Monaghan, but isn’t this young lady being a bit too reckless? She just pins crimes on others without hesitation. As a police officer, shouldn’t you discipline her a bit?"
Helen immediately got the hint and said sternly to Sarah Grandy, "This is indeed a serious matter. I need to go to your house and speak to your parents about it so they can properly discipline you."
Sarah Grandy jumped in fright and pleaded urgently, "Really? It was just a joke, does it need to involve my parents?" If the police showed up at her house, it wouldn’t just be a scolding; she might even get beaten.
Helen glared and grabbed Sarah by the arm, saying, "A joke? Do you think this is something to joke about? Come on, take me to your house."
"Officer Monaghan, please, don’t tell my parents, please—I admit my mistake, isn’t that enough? I’m begging you, please."
While struggling, Sarah continued to beg desperately.
"No way, what you did this time was really terrible. If I don’t tell your parents about it, and you end up taking the criminal path, that would be my fault. Don’t move. I’m telling you, even if you run now, I can find out your home address and phone number immediately."
"Uncle, Uncle! Help me out, please. If I promise to go home now, can you keep Officer Monaghan from contacting my parents?"
Hearing this, James Brown immediately said to Helen, "Officer Monaghan, Sarah is indeed young and bound to make mistakes. Why don’t you let her off the hook this time to avoid deepening the discord between her and her parents? It’ll be even more difficult to manage her that way."
Helen hesitated for a moment, not agreeing immediately. Seeing a glimmer of hope, Sarah quickly shook Helen’s arm and said in an ingratiating tone, "Officer Monaghan, I really won’t commit the same mistake again. Can you give me another chance?"
Helen then relented, "Alright, you head home now. If you dare linger outside, I’ll definitely notify your parents tomorrow."
"I’m going home—I’m heading home right away." Sarah dashed out the door of James’s house as if flying. Running away from home still left her inherently afraid of her parents, especially after making a mistake. Thus, she had no option but to obediently return home.
As soon as Sarah left, Helen glared menacingly at James. James chuckled and said, "Officer Monaghan, you really are clever. With just one look, you understood what I meant."
"Hmph, don’t try to butter me up. You just said that disgusting thing to scare me off; how should we settle that score?"
Compared to the trouble caused by Sarah and Helen, James felt Sarah was the more problematic. Knowing Helen would certainly look for payback later, he chuckled and said, "Officer Monaghan, you think I was joking? You had me cuffed. Aren’t you satisfied yet?"
"Hmph, are you saying you let me cuff you on purpose?"
"Hehe, with someone as perceptive and brilliant as you, Officer Monaghan, it’s impossible not to notice that little girl was deliberately trying to frame me."
"Hmph, at least you’re conscious of reality." Though Helen’s tone remained unfriendly, she appeared quite pleased with James’s words.
"Exactly, I’m very perceptive. Otherwise, why would you consider me a friend?"
"Stop right there, I haven’t regarded you as a friend. I’m warning you, you are a prime suspect to me now. I’ve always suspected that you swindle money from wealthy women."
"What?" James’s eyes widened in shock.
"What, did I hit the nail on the head?" Helen stared into James’s eyes.
James opened his mouth, then said with a pained smile, "Officer Monaghan, you can’t just accuse people like that. True, all the women I interact with are wealthy, but whom have I ever deceived?"
"Oh really? Then tell me, what’s your relationship with that director you took away that day?"
"That... should just be a friendly relationship."
"What about the general manager? I saw you spending money lavishly, buying a few clothes and spending fourteen dollars. With your salary, can you afford that?"
Only then did James realize why Helen suspected him of conning women’s money—he couldn’t help but smile wryly and said, "Officer Monaghan, what you saw that day were the Twins, our boss’s sisters. I was accompanying them shopping, and it was the boss’s money we spent, I was just handling it. To think you actually mistook me as a ’Pretty Boy’—do I really have that potential?"
Seeing James touching his face in a self-admiring manner, Helen got goosebumps all over, but hearing his explanation, her suspicions about James were greatly reduced.
