Chapter 130: Another case closed, but glory was taken.

Silence filled the air. The academy’s pride shattered. A student, crushed by pressure, a professor who lived by his standards. A death that could have been avoided, perhaps, if the Bureau had intervened and regularly involved themselves in the affairs of the school.

But sadly, with the system wars going on, all anyone had seen was the man who kept creating talents for the country. Not that pain.

Linlin arrived and sent a text to Liwu. She conformed that traces of system activity had been discovered in Chen Wei’s room indeed. The signal had been tracked all the way to the professor’s office.

Weijun sighed.

"How did you kill him?" He Xiao Yi asked.

Chen Wei sobbed. "I didn’t want to kill him. I had this syringe with truth serum which I got from my system. I just wanted him to tell me why he was determined to ruin all of us. I thought I would record it and put it online for everyone to hear. To see him for who he was. A monster." He wiped his tears. "But, he struggled and the needle ended up in the wrong place. It was supposed to go into his neck, not brain. I didn’t know that different locations create different reactions. Suddenly he was clenching his heart."

He shook his head and covered his ears as if it could block out a sound only he could hear. "It was beating so loud, like a drum. I don’t understand how....he just collapsed. Then he wasn’t breathing....but how? It was just truth serum." His hands fell, as did tears from his eyes.

"Did you know the contents of the serum?" Su Jin asked him.

Chen Wei shook his head.

"And that right there is the problem." Su Jin declared. "You used truth serum from a system that gave you a product from an unknown world. It was made it unknown contents. You didn’t even know if it had ever been tested on a human before or what would be the consequences of using it. For a smart kid, you made a dumb decision."

Liwu read Chen Wei his rights while Su Jin handcuffed him and took him away to an SUV waiting outside. The rest of the team remained in the library, reflecting on the crime and the consequences.

"My God, this is a tragedy." Linlin said softly. "I don’t know who to feel sorry for. Is it the professor who was killed by a child he mentored or the child who was filled with hatred for him because he felt betrayed by his mentor."

The others could not respond. The choice was a tricky one. For He Xiao Yi however, it was simple. He felt a little bad for Chen Wei because he thought the kid should have moved to a normal school if he couldn’t cope. In a normal school, Chen Wei would have been the best of the best.

He would have many opportunities waiting for him when he graduated. The boy should have cut his losses and run when he had the chance.

But, the biggest cause of the tragedy was Professor Ce. His arrogance had caused everything.

Su Jin returned, with empty handcuffs and a pale face. "They have taken him!" She huffed. "I put the kid in the car and then Agent Aang showed up and snatched him!"

As soon as she finished sharing this, Chief Abby cleared his throat. "We should go, there is nothing left here for our team."

Weijun stepped forward and took center position, where he could see all of them. "Why are you all calm? Someone else is going to get credit for your work. Aren’t you angry?"

He Xiao Yi and Xuanji laughed.

"We expected this," Liwu replied simply, "This was not our case, not technically. The main branch of the SOB was in charge and we were brought in as consultants. At the end of the day, everyone that matters knows we solved the case. We will be given credit for it internally and we will be paid a hefty sum."

Weijun scoffed. "Consultants my ass! Where were the other officers of the bureau apart from us? We worked the case, endured scornful looks, survived a car bomb and solved the murder but they get the big press conference, flowers and handshakes?"

"Wei..." Liwu started.

"And don’t get me started on Chen Wei." He bellowed. "We all know they rushed in to take him because he has that system which uncovers secrets and truth serum. The kid is probably being debriefed and prepared for plastic surgery. Then, he will be dropped off in a foreign country to start afresh as a spy. Am I wrong?" 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Nobody answered.

Liwu smacked him on the hand. "Yes, you are wrong." Her eyes implored him to look around. The library had kids with systems. How many of them were eavesdropping? "Chen Wei will be stripped of his system and serve his sentence."

"In juvie." Xuanji said sullenly.

"We don’t know that." Liwu snapped. Then loudly, she added, "Murder is a serious crime."

"Why are you raising your voice?" Weijun asked her.

Liwu groaned. The others laughed and started heading out the door. By the time they packed their luggage and drove out of the town, words had already spread quickly. Some parents that had been in town, waiting on the verdict, wept.

Those who treasured their children were already asking for transfers out of the academy because they were scared of what the pressure would do to them.

Students that loved the professor genuinely were in mourning.

As for the detectives, they were just glad that they would not need to do paperwork. This was what they were discussing when the front car came to an abrupt halt. Ahead of it was He Xiao Yi’s mother, standing in the middle of the only path into the town.

Her clothes were covered in leaves. It seemed like she had been hiding in the grass, beneath the trees on the side of the road, waiting for this chance to stop them.

"Everyone should stay where they are." He Xiao Yi communicated.

He lowered the window of his car and stuck his head out. His mother rushed over, tears in her eyes. "I was coming from the mall out of the town when I heard the news that the case had been solved and you were leaving." She whispered, "I’m sorry."

He Xiao Yi’s jaw tightened. "You let them frame me. You let your husband beat me. You wished me dead."

Her voice broke. "We had no choice."

"Yes you did." He Xiao Yi said coldly, pulled his head back inside and rolled the window up. The cars roared back to life silently and set off.

In the distance, through the side mirror, Liwu saw the lonely figure of a tired, sad woman, crying alone in the middle of the road. Whatever regrets she had, there was no medicine for them.
