The Thorne of Destiny-Chapter 129: Killing the Guards
"Tsk tsk, what an unlucky fellow."
"They’re just looking for an excuse to deal with him."
"Hmm, he should have just apologized instead of ignoring them."
"Hmph, serves him right. Such arrogance with only Foundation Establishment realm strength."
The two guards puffed out their chests, emboldened by the attention. One of them brandished a crude iron badge as if it gave him the weight of a sect decree. "You heard me!" he barked. "This man is under suspicion of treason and cultivation crimes against the city! Anyone aiding him will be considered complicit!"
The second guard took a few steps toward Adrian, drawing the saber at his side. "You’re coming with us."
Adrian’s lips twitched beneath the hood.
He had hoped to get through this peacefully, but it seemed that it wasn’t going to happen. Was he going to allow himself to get captured?
Of course, he wasn’t. Especially when he knew that these guards only wanted to teach him a lesson.
Just as the guard approached and wanted to grab his arm, Adrian side-stepped him again. However, this time, that wasn’t the end. He sent out a punch towards the guard who was close to him.
The guard, who wasn’t expecting Adrian to attack him, couldn’t react in time. Even though he was standing straight and talking loudly, he was still drunk.
He wasn’t able to react in time and soon;
Boom!
The sound of a punch could be heard. The guard’s eyes widened in horror as he glanced down to see the fist that was now stuck in his chest.
He couldn’t believe that a Foundation Establishment realm cultivator would be able to deal with such a devastating challenge to him. As the light in his eyes began fading away, a wave of regret washed over him.
He regretted antagonizing this monster. If only his stupid partner hadn’t bumped into him. That was his last thought as his eyes faded to black.
Just as everyone in the crowd was shocked, Adrian didn’t stop moving. He swiftly pulled back his fist before the man’s body fell to the ground.
He charged straight towards the second guard, who was now frozen in fear.
"Wait, st-". Before he could complete his sentence, Adrian’s fist landed on his head, shattering it completely.
His hand was now dripping with blood as the bodies of the two guards collapsed onto the ground.
Before the crowd that had gathered could react, Adrian began running away. No one stopped him. Or rather, they were too stunned to do so. He weaved between the crowd, trying to escape as far as possible.
Only after he disappeared into an alleyway did they snap out of their stupor. As soon as they did, the crowd erupted into chaos.
Everybody was scrambling to get away from the crime scene. They knew it wouldn’t be long before what just happened became known and the place would soon be stormed with soldiers. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
None of them wanted to get involved in such matters. Witnessing a fight was one thing; getting involved with the authorities was another. They didn’t want their somewhat peaceful lives disrupted just because they witnessed a fight.
Well, it wasn’t a fight. It was a massacre. Still, that’s besides the point. Almost all the spectators dispersed, and the only ones that were left were those with shops and stalls nearby, and couldn’t leave.
Meanwhile, Adrian was dashing through the alleyway. As soon as he reached somewhere that wasn’t visible to people, he quickly began wiping the blood off his hands.
As soon as he was done with that, he retrieved the Veil of a Hundred Shadows. Without delay, he placed the bamboo hat on his head, transforming into what was now his default disguise.
Soon, a middle-aged Golden Core realm cultivator stepped out of the other end of the alley and continued making his way back towards the inn.
As he continued walking, he could see multiple soldiers rushing past him, making their way towards the scene of the fight. A few of them glanced at him, but he remained calm and continued walking down the street.
He reached the inn and quickly made his way towards the room of Jayson and Olivia. Inside the room, the two kids flinched a little when they heard the knock on their door.
They both became on high alert, but soon they relaxed. The middle-aged man who entered the room was one whom they recognized.
It was Adrian. Of course, they knew this wasn’t his actual appearance. Still, that didn’t stop Olivia from running into his arms in a big hug.
Adrian caught the little girl and hugged her while carrying her in his arms. With the little girl in his arms, he took off the Veil of a hundred Shadows, and his form reverted back to his normal self.
Olivia, who was still in his arms, had her eyes shining in excitement, watching that scene up close. Even though she had seen it before, it was still surprising to see it up close.
He soon dropped her and made his way to the bed. Without much conversation, he collapsed onto it. He was very tired. Even though he didn’t show it, using the Veil of a Hundred Shadows for that long depleted his Qi severely.
If he hadn’t recently experienced a breakthrough, he probably would not have been able to use it for that long. Jayson and Olivia both rushed to his side when they saw his condition, but he waved them off.
"Don’t worry. I’m fine. I’m just tired." He said in between breaths. After a few minutes, he was able to catch his breath and sat up to face the two kids. However, before they could have a conversation, they heard a knock on the door.
Everyone furrowed their brows, and Adrian was about to bring out his sword when they heard a voice from outside the door.
"Young master, young miss, I’ve brought you meals," It was John. Even in this inn, he was still responsible for bringing their food.
"Enter." Adrian gave him permission, and soon, a trolley filled with various kinds of foods was wheeled in.
The kids’ eyes sparkled, and they had a sumptuous dinner.
Meanwhile, in the City Lord’s mansion, City Lord Richard and his son were receiving an unusual report. The captain of the guards regiment was kneeling in front of them.
He had come here to report a strange incident to the City Lord.
"Speak," City Lord Richards spoke in his usual imposing tone. His demeanor right now was nothing like what he showed in front of Bella and Elder Glenda.
In front of the two women from the House of Vyre, he showed a submissive and almost meek attitude, but in front of the residents of the city, he was the imposing and ruthless City Lord.
This was his normal disposition. It was what anyone who was familiar with him would know him for and what his enemies feared him for.
The captain of the guards’ regiment trembled slightly when he heard his words, but quickly regained his composure. Quickly clearing his throat, he began to relay what he was here for.
"My Lord, I just received a report from the outer regions of the city. Two guards were murdered in broad daylight by an unknown cultivator."
"Hmm? Is that all? That is the reason you are disturbing me?" City Lord Richards said while raising an eyebrow. Even though his words seemed casual, the pressure in the room seemed to increase.
Knowing that his life was on the line, the guard’s captain quickly spoke up.
"Of course not, my Lord. I came here because the guards that were killed were in the initial stage of the Golden Core realm."
"And?" It was Julian who butt in this time.
"...And the one that killed them was a Foundation Establishment realm cultivator." The guard’s captain said.
This time, City Lord Richards’ interest was piqued.
"... You’re saying that a Foundation Establishment realm cultivator killed two Golden Core realm city guards." He asked to confirm.
The guard’s captain nodded his head in confirmation before continuing, "That’s not all, my Lord. Apparently, he did it in one move."
This time, the City Lord and Julian were both stunned; they both glanced at each other and, seeing the look in the other’s eyes, they knew they had come to the same conclusion.
’Is it him?’ Both of them asked this question in their minds. Could they actually be lucky enough to find the person they were looking for?
Julian was already grinning like a fool and quickly ordered.
"What are you waiting for? Drag him here right now." He said excitedly. However, the guard captain’s next words doused his excitement.
"We couldn’t catch him."
"Huh! What do you mean you couldn’t find him? Are you telling me a Foundation Establishment realm cultivator was able to escape from my city guards?
Are you all that useless?" City Lord Richards asked, his eyes narrowing.
"T-That’s not it, my Lord. We got there as quickly as possible and were told he ran into an alley. We immediately tried to chase him down, however there was no trace of him there.
It was almost as if he had -".
"Vanished." It was Julian who completed the sentence.
