Chapter 194: Ch 194: The Sacrifice- Part 1

Something was wrong... that feeling jolted Theo awake and he immediately opened his eyes to see where Kyle was. But he did not see Kyle anywhere when he first opened his eyes.

He quickly moved his eyes around and finally saw Kyle... near the vortex and interacting with it.

His younger self was still asleep but at his panicked notice it woke up as well and looked at what Kyle was doing.

"W-What-! Kyle, what are you doing? Stop it right now."

That was what Theo spoke, but no words came out of his mouth even when he opened it with all his might. He could tell that his younger self was trying to do the same. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

However, no matter what they did, Kyle did not hear them. He was forcing the vortex to accept his sacrifice.

"I will... not stay... sitting back..."

Kyle forced the door open with all his might and finally broke free from the bonds that held him back. He forced his way out and his younger self did the same.

Their arms wrapped around Kyle as they tried to pull him back. But the vortex had started to devour Kyle’s gift and it no longer wanted to give up on Kyle.

So when Kyle pulled at the bonds, the vortex pulled it back.

"What are you doing, Kyle? Stop it-! You don’t have to do it. You don’t have to take the burden on yourself like this."

Theo told Kyle, but Kyle just chuckled.

"But you left me no choice. Theo, you have messed up everything and now I need to correct it. So please, give me some space."

Theo refused to move away. Both his and his younger self’s eyes looked at Kyle with determination.

"No. We did what we had to for your sake. So don’t you dare render all of our hopes into dust and make the same decision. We can change the future-"

"But I don’t want to change it. It would defeat the purpose of everything I... no, we went through. I just wanted to live a carefree life with you in the future. Don’t you want that? Just you, me and our future kids?"

Kyle asked and Theo felt his determination waver.

The more he heard Kyle describe what he wanted with Theo, the more Theo felt like he wanted the same thing. It felt too... much like what he had hoped for.

"Kyle, I... want that as well."

His younger self had already given in and lightened his grip on Kyle. He had been persuaded already.

But the older and bitter self was different. He did not want to give up on what he had achieved to do.

"I don’t want that. A huge part of you won’t be here after and I want you to be with me whole-"

"But that would make me hate you. Are you alright with that?"

Kyle asked and now Theo panicked for real. He could take anything but Kyle hating him. That was one thing he could not bear.

"No-! Anything but that. I-"

"Then let me go and let’s go back."

Kyle told him and Theo’s determination wavered. He placed his hand in Kyle’s hand and everything was alright... for a few seconds.

The vortex did not like their decision to calm things down and it went out of control.

"T-The vortex, it has lost control. It is threatening to swallow everything. What should we do now?"

The younger Theo asked with a terrified voice.

Theo felt his breath hitch as the vortex’s surface rippled violently, twisting into distorted spirals of light and darkness. It looked as if the entire space was collapsing inward, devouring itself piece by piece. Even the ground beneath their feet trembled, threatening to give way at any second.

"It... it wasn’t supposed to react like this. Kyle, step away. We need to stabilize it before—"

The older Theo muttered, his voice shaking despite trying to sound composed.

But Kyle shook his head stubbornly.

"No. If I step away now, it will explode instead. It already accepted my offering. If I forcefully cancel it, it will reject everything. Including us."

The younger Theo swallowed hard. "Then what do we do? We can’t let it swallow us either. We don’t even know where it leads."

Kyle’s eyes hardened in determination.

"It leads to nothingness. A reset point. But I won’t let it get that far. If we cut off its energy source, it will stop pulling us in."

The older Theo immediately grabbed Kyle’s wrist.

"You are its energy source! If we cut it off from you, you will—"

Kyle forced a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

"I know."

Theo froze.

For a moment, everything around them blurred—though whether from the vortex’s instability or from panic settling into Theo’s chest, he could not tell. His grip tightened desperately.

"No. You promised we would go back. You promised. You can’t say things like that."

Kyle touched the back of Theo’s hand lightly, almost reassuringly.

"I meant it. We will go back. But only if we do this right. So, please... don’t stop me."

The younger Theo’s voice cracked. "Kyle, wait—if you sever your connection, you’ll disappear. The vortex will take the part of you that it already accepted."

"That’s fine. This is not the end."

Kyle replied simply.

Theo’s heart dropped.

"No, it’s not fine! Nothing about that is fine! You can’t keep deciding these things alone! You can’t—"

He shouted, voice breaking as the vortex sucked in another violent gust of wind.

Kyle leaned forward just enough for Theo to hear him over the roaring noise.

"But I’m not deciding alone. I’m asking you to help me."

Theo shook his head, trembling.

"I can’t. If I help you do this... I’ll lose you."

Kyle’s eyes softened with something painfully gentle.

"You won’t lose me. I’ll find my way back to you. No matter how long it takes."

The younger Theo flinched, tears forming but refusing to fall. The older Theo bit his lip until it bled.

The vortex screamed, louder now, hungry and impatient.

Kyle stepped closer to it.

"Kyle—!"

Both Theos reached for him at the same time.

But the light surged violently, swallowing his silhouette.

And the world around them began to tear apart.
