The Ultimate Chance-Chapter 170
AN: Trigger warning
_____
"Who the hell are you?" Gabe barked.
That seemed to infuriate the man even more. "Of course you would forget all about me."
He frowned. He had uncountable enemies but he was pretty certain he had never crossed paths with this man before.
Knowing telling him that would not bode well, he decided to distract him. But before that, he glanced at Mina to let her know whatever he was going to say was a lie and he didn’t mean any of it.
He could only hope she understood him.
"I’ve been spending so much of my time with women that I may have forgotten. Speaking of which, why are you holding onto one of my women? Did I accidentally knock yours up or something?"
He tried not to glance at Mina’s expression but he did anyway, and she looked hurt. Shit. He wanted nothing more than to pull her into his arms and comfort her but he was not going to be able to do that if he blew this up.
As expected, the man looked a little confused. The only reason he had grabbed Mina was because he assumed Mina meant a lot to Gabriel—considering the fact that she’d managed to drag him down the aisle—Gabriel could see the wheels turning in his head.
After a moment, he scoffed. "Nice try. I’m going to kill her as you watch."
"Fine, but what did I do to incur your vengeance?" He raised a brow, infuriating him even more.
That was not what he wanted to do. Usually, he would try to gently diffuse the situation. Heck, he would go down on his knees and lick this man’s boot if it was what it took to save Mina.
However, he had already figured out the idiot’s identity and he knew this was the only way he could handle it as he bought some time for Nero.
"You broke my brother’s arm." He seethed.
Of course he broke Scott’s arm. The idiot thought he could have any woman he wanted, and a woman saying no meant he should force her into it. It was one of the things Gabe found out about him too late, and he just happened to figure that out the hard way—when Scott tried to force himself on Avery.
He should have killed the asshole, he thought.
He didn’t need to say that. A clank resounded behind him and he turned, his eyes narrowing when he realized Nero was not where he’d been a few seconds ago. He was now behind him.
Gabe grabbed the chance when the captor was distracted to shoot him in the face, right between his brows. Nero knocked his wrist away in the nick of time, preventing his knife from slitting Mina’s throat on his way down.
Mina stayed in the same spot, her eyes widened as she stared at the man who had dropped dead in what felt like the blink of an eye. Then she glanced up at Gabe, who had his arms opened to her.
She ran over and threw herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. She was terrified before now but now that it was over, suddenly the fear had intensified.
"Let’s get out of here." Gabe said. "Nero, get someone to come down here and clean. Be careful, he could have minions somewhere."
He wrapped his arm around Mina’s shoulders and led her out. She stopped after a few steps, clutching her stomach.
A jolt of fear ran down his spine, much worse than when he walked into the cabin and saw his wife with a blade held against her neck. Oh no.

After pacing the hallway for what was probably the twentieth time, he returned to the nurse and asked, "are they done yet?"
The nurse let out an annoyed sigh and ignored him.
He had bugged her at least a dozen times so he understood the annoyance, but that didn’t mean he was going to stop asking.
What was taking so long?
He would have barged into the room and demanded to know what was happening to his wife but he knew his interruption might cause even more harm.
While it was not a sudden bullet that made Mina wince earlier, this was probably not any better.
On their way home, Mina had felt more cramping in her stomach and it was nothing like the mild cramping the doctor had told them to expect in the third trimester. There was nothing mild about it. When they caught sight of a blood stain on the front of her clothes, they almost lost their minds.
"Everything okay?" Avery asked, having just arrived. Gabe had called her and Damon and told them they had found Mina, but they were going to hospital.
He didn’t want them to worry but Avery knew his tone all too well.
Seeing his sister, he pulled her away from Damon and into his arms.
"She will be fine, Gabe." She assured him, hoping that was not a lie. What would become of him if the situation was worse than it sounded?
As the only sane person in the room, Damon sat them both down and comforted them as they waited for the doctors to finish whatever they were doing.
About an hour later, the doctor finally came out. Avery tried to gauge his reaction and saw nothing worth noting. He must have the same expression on his face whether he was delivering good news or bad news.
By the time she asked anything, Gabe had sprung to his feet and was asking a million questions by the second.
This time, the doctor’s expression cracked and he didn’t need to say much. Avery’s stomach sunk.
For the rest of it, she watched as Gabe walked into the ward on auto-pilot. They usually only allowed one visitor at a time but Gabe was glued to Mina’s side and there was no chance of getting him out, so they let Avery in as well.
Nothing would have prepared her for the sight she came face to face with. Mina was curled up on the bed in fetal position, not saying a word. She wasn’t even sobbing aloud but her little frame quaked once in a while and Avery could clearly see the wet patch by her head that must be Mina’s tears.
"Mina," she called out gently.
Mina didn’t say a word but her silence confirmed the doctor’s words. They couldn’t do much to save the baby.
Mina’s life was not in danger or anything, but the doctor hadn’t been able to hide the truth from his words. He didn’t think the baby would survive. They would do their best, is what they had said.
She wasn’t sure what was worse—losing one’s baby, or having to live out each torturous day and probably holding onto a shred of hope despite knowing you were going to lose them?
She held Mina’s hand, and the latter broke into loud, heartbreaking sobs.
