The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 28 - . You Don’t Want My Blood
Chapter 28: 28. You Don't Want My Blood
"You know, maybe we did." She heard him say.
Before she could process his words, he took a step forward and closed the gap between them. Mauve's breath seized and she fought the urge to take a step back as she had done in the library. She was scared of him but she did not really think he would hurt her.
Mauve slowly raised her head, she could not hear anything except the loud beating of her heart. Jael's blue eyes were searching her face, even in the low-lit corridor, his eyes glowed. She opened her lips, it was suddenly too hard to breathe.
Jael dipped his head and Mauve instinctively closed her eyes. He flicked her hair over her left shoulder, his cold fingers made her shiver. She gripped her dress tighter as her heart threatened to pop out of her chest.
He touched her shoulder, tracing the outline with a finger. "You should go to sleep." His voice sounded musky.
Mauve eyes flew open and she blinked rapidly as she tried to comprehend his words. She nodded her head and took a step back. "I do feel tired," she mumbled. She rubbed her left ear, he had spoken directly into it and the feeling of his breath against it made it tingle. It was a weird sensation.
"I will walk with you, try not to fall down the stairs."
Mauve eyes widened, she scoffed at him and walked towards the stairs. She gripped the railings just in case. It would be embarrassing if she fell after his warning but she hated the fact that he was expecting her to fall and she never disappointed.
It was hard to walk in this type of dress, she was still not used to them. She was certain that if the king had not walked her down those stairs, she would have fallen on her face. She felt cold as she remembered the night she had been technically sold.
Here she was trying to pretend like everything was normal, that she was married to some human prince and not the vampire king. She was thinking about them kissing again, she must be out of her mind.
Mauve heard a loud thud and turned to see Jael falling down the stairs. She yelped and rushed after him. By the time she got to the end of the stairs, he was already on his feet. "Are you okay?" She cried out to him, he was using the railing to support himself.
"I am okay," his words sounded a little muffled and he made no move to stand upright.
The light here was much better as it was a few feet away from her room's door. She walked closer, she was curious and worried at the same time. That was when she noticed there was blood on his lips.
"You are hurt," she rushed towards him and peered into his face, that was when she noticed his fangs. She gasped and her heart spiked.
He looked at her with unreadable eyes and ran his tongue over the wound, "It is nothing." He pushed himself forward and walked past her.
She wanted to protest but decided against it. Something must be terribly wrong and she knew the last he would want would be a feeble human girl fussing about him. Just before her door, Jael staggered and used the wall as support.
Her eyes widened in horror. What could possibly be wrong? Did he need blood? She knew blood was crucial for vampires and if they went long without it, they could go crazy. She rushed at him and tried to touch him.
"Don't!" He scolded and she jumped in fright. He sighed, "I just need to go to my room and get some sleep, I will be fine."
"I see," Mauve muttered and her hands fall to her sides.
She stood about four feet away from him but did not attempt to approach her door.
"Go to sleep," he growled and gestured towards the door.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" She asked.
Her heart was beating loudly in her chest but still, there was no way she would leave him here like this. There was also the fact that if it hadn't been for her he would still be asleep in bed.
She didn't know what errand he had to run upstairs but he would have at least gotten enough rest before that. She could not help but feel partly responsible even though she had absolutely no idea what was going on.
Jael chuckled, his lips widened into a smile that exposed his teeth. He threw himself off the wall and closed the gap between them in a millisecond.
"You want to help?" He spat out.

Mauve closed her eyes, she couldn't step back here even though every bone in her body was telling her to run. "Yes," she replied and bit her lip.
"How bold?" He laughed. "You can't even stand the sight of me. You reek of fear, it's not a good smell."
Mauve bent her head forward.
"But since you offered who am I to refuse?" He raised her head with his finger.
Mauve closed her eyes tighter.
"You won't even look at me and yet you want to help." His finger let go of her chin. "Go to sleep. It will dawn soon, I will get what I need by then."
"You don't want my blood?" Mauve asked without thinking. She had felt nothing but useless during the trip and to top it all up Danag had declined her offer when she thought she could finally be of help.
They had not been able to stay in any inn because of her, and neither could they stop at any Lord's house. If she had been a proper princess, there wouldn't have been such an incident even if her companions were vampires.
"You have no idea…" Jael said and Mauve bit the inside of her cheeks.
She knew firsthand how strong vampires could be and if it weren't for blood, they wouldn't need humans at all. If he didn't want the one thing she could give then what was her role here?
