Chapter 33: 33. Strings

Mauve gathered her dress in her hands and walked out of the kitchen. She walked normally until she got outside the door of the kitchen and then started briskly walking. She didn't stop walking until she got to the door of her room. She hesitated a little before stepping in. Her hands slowed as she reached out to touch the door handle. She turned and looked towards Jael's door. He must have heard her leave her room but unlike the day before, he didn't step out of his, even though she had left her room and returned several times already. She shook the thoughts away and stepped into her room.

The windows and curtains were still open. She quickly lit the candles and closed the windows. She couldn't have it open and if she did it now, she wouldn't have to rush when Mill came up with the fruits. She sat on the bed and waited, for some reason, she felt on edge.

Aside from the guards that brought her to the castle, she did not have any form of contact with the other vampires, she has never spoken to one and vice versa.

They all spoke to Vae and Vae reported back to her. Mill's reaction toward her had thrown her off a bit. She had expected some meanness or at least condescension but the vampire had spoken to her in such a polite manner.

She grinned, she wasn't in the habit of making friends but it would be nice to have some kind of relationship with a vampire and the best part was she was a girl.

She didn't look too older than Mauve, Mauve would guess that they were the same age if she had to go by appearances but since vampires aged very slowly, it was safe to assume Mill was a least ten years older than she was.

A knock jolted her out of her thoughts. She adjusted in the bed before calling, "Come in."

No response and then after about two seconds, she heard a loud noise and the handle of the door turned. She opened her mouth to say her thanks but immediately sealed it shut when she saw who was at the door.

Her brows furrowed as she stared at who just walked into her room. She recognized the vampire immediately as they have run into each other several times before now but that wasn't the only thing, she had just run into the same face a few minutes ago.

"Are you Mill's brother?" She asked unintentionally.

She was wondering how she had not immediately realized it when she spoke to Mill as this particular vampire had caused a scene in her room earlier when Vae was around.

He jerked his head upwards and glared at her. "What about it?" His pace did not slow as he approached her.

"I knew it. Oh my goodness. You look the same. You can't just be siblings are you?" She was trying everything to keep her rear to the bed.

The vampire's face changed from annoyance to disgust. He stared at Mauve as though he was staring at a rat that had just crawled out of the sewage. However, Mauve was too far gone to notice.

"Are you twins, perhaps?" She gasped. "Vampire twins, I have never heard of any before let alone identical twins." She squeezed the sheets as she tried to keep her excitement down.

The vampire didn't say anything. He dropped the tray and started walking out of the room.

Mauve immediately stopped talking as she realized what was happening. She bowed her head. She had gotten too excited. Mill had made her forget where she was for a couple of seconds. She kept her head low until he left the room.

She swallowed and looked at the tray. She was starving. She picked an apple, they were pretty, ripe, and looked very fresh. She immediately picked one and took a bite when she noticed there was a small knife on the tray along with the apples.

She wondered if it was to peel the apples, not that there was any need to. She always ate her apples this way. She had seen the royal family and members of the Aristocrats eat their apples peeled several times but it tasted wrong if she ate it without the skin.

She took the fourth apple and froze, if it weren't for the cores laid on the tray, she wouldn't believe she had eaten that many that fast. A loud burp escaped her lips and she touched her stomach. This wasn't doing much but at least she wasn't starving again.

She didn't stop eating though and was about to eat the last apple when she heard a knock. Mauve froze with her mouth full of apples. She hurriedly chewed and swallowed, almost choking.

"Come in," she called out amidst coughs.

The door opened to reveal Mill standing outside.

"Come in," Mauve repeated with a big smile.

"Sorry, to be a bother princess but I just had to come by."

"No, it is fine. Come on in." She waved her right hand gesturing for Mill to come closer. "Also call me Mauve. The apples were delicious."

"Okay, Mauve. I am glad you liked them." She took a step into the room and closed the door behind her.

"Who wouldn't? I could help but eat them quickly."

Mauve reddened, the vampire that had just brought the tray left less than fifteen minutes ago, and somehow she had almost finished them so quickly. She reddened some more and bent her head, Mill must surely think there was something wrong with her.

Mill got closer to her and stopped walking. She didn't say anything, just stood still. Mauve couldn't help but raise her head as she wondered what was wrong.

"Mill, is something wrong?" Mauve asked, her embarrassment forgotten.

"I am sorry for my brother's behavior. I shouldn't have sent him but it is almost time for the first meal and I had my hands full preparing so I sent him instead."

"Don't worry about it." Mauve said and chuckled awkwardly. "I shouldn't have asked him such personal questions."

"Did he offer to peel your apples?"

"No, there was no need for that. I like my apples unpeeled."

"That ungrateful brat," she mumbled. "I am sure he didn't tell you about the bells either." Mill said.

Mauve shook her head. She was actually very curious about the bells. She had not seen any and she had made sure to check every inch of the room.

"I knew it and he dared to lie to me."

Mill bowed her head, "Please forgive him."

"No, no. It is fine. He wasn't out of line in any way." She gestured with her hands to show, she wasn't annoyed or anything.

"Still, to be rude to The Sire's guest is completely out of the question."

Quest?

Mauve frowned, she was here to stay. Forever. Her face fell as she also realized Mill was being nice to her because of Jael.

"It is very fine, really."

"Okay. About the bells."

"Yes," Mauve asked, turning her neck wildly as she tried to find the bells, wondering how she could have missed them.

"This is for the servant quarters and this is for the kitchen. " At Mill's voice, Mauve turned her head towards the direction she was pointing.

It was right beside her bed. There were three strings by the bedside, on the wall. She had seen them before now but assumed they were part of the decor.

"It doesn't matter which you use, they all function the same." Mill continued to speak. "One ring summons a servant, two rings mean bath, three rings mean meal…"

She turned to look at Mauve to check if she understood. Mauve quickly nodded her head.

"One ring is enough most times. A servant would get here immediately to take your order." Mill explained.

"Alright, what about the third one?" Mauve pointed. This string was a little different, it was brown compared to the other cream ones.

"That is for emergencies. It summons the guards."

"Oh, are there usually emergencies?" Her eyes glowed even as fear gripped her heart. She wondered what could possibly attack vampires that they had an emergency bell for it.

"No but Palers can be a little too brave sometimes and since they can roam freely in dark without being seen easily, they tend to exploit it."

Mauve gasped, "Palers attack here." She had never heard of palers leaving the nolands. They often stray past their territory but never that far.

"No, no. I am sorry to scare you. I have been here for nearly forty years and there haven't been any paler attacks. It is just for precautions."

"Forty years?" Mauve eyes nearly popped out of her sockets. She had been so wrong about Mill's age. "How old are you?!" She yelled. She caught herself immediately, "I am sorry."

"It is nothing to apologize about." Mill chuckled. "I am thirty-six years old."
