"Princess," Vae called, breaking through Mauve's thoughts. Mauve blinked as she returned to reality. "What do you think?"
Mauve arched her head to the side as she checked her reflection. Vae had tied her hair into a braided bun with flowers all around the bun. "Beautiful, it looks so pretty Vae." She was still in a sour mood but this time it was directed at somebody else. "Thank you."
Vae's face brightened and she smiled, "You are too kind, princess. Is there anything else you would like me to do for you?"
Mauve shook her head, "That is all. I will call you up if I need anything." she smiled faintly at Vae.
The maid bowed before she walked toward the door and left the room. Mauve sighed as she watched Vae go then she turned and looked at her reflection again. She saw a young woman with a blank expression looking back at her.
She pushed herself off the seat and spun as she tried to see her outfit. Vae had changed her dress. She was grateful for that, the dress brought up memories she did not want to think about while eating with the guards.
She checked herself again, she would have to say her thanks to them and convey how worried she was but she did not know how she would go about that. She sighed again, this meal had barely started and she was already stressed, this was why she wanted to eat in the confines of her room.
She groaned, it did not help that Damon had caught them in such a state. This was all Jael's fault. She was certain the rest of the guards already knew what had happened in the library. Was it really too late to decide to eat in her room?
A loud knock caused Mauve to jerk. "By the gods!" She swore. "Come in," she called out.
The door opened to reveal a servant. "The second meal has commenced," He announced without stepping into the room.
"Thank you," Mauve said and the servant nodded. He immediately closed the door.
Mauve checked her reflection again, she wished she had a good enough reason to not go but she knew she had none. She took a deep breath and tried to summon courage.
She closed her eyes and stepped away from the dresser. She opened it and then walked out the door. She closed the door but her hands refused to leave the handle. From where she stood, she could see the ballroom was brightly lit. It must be quite the occasion, she thought.
She glanced towards Jael's door, wondering if he was in there or already in the dining hall, not that she cared. She started towards the stairs, there was only one way to find out.
She grabbed her dress and lifted it a little, to avoid stepping on it. Mauve gripped her dress, a little too tightly as her mind churned. She was getting closer and closer to the hall. She really could not turn back now.
In front of the door were two guards, she had seen them before, she nodded at them and they opened the door. She walked in and blinked a little. The first person she saw was Damon. Mauve immediately looked away, a little blush crept up her cheeks.
She picked up her pace, the fact that they were all staring at her was very uncomfortable. She walked to where she usually sat during meals and immediately took a seat. The three musketeers sat across her in a single file, leaving no seat between them. They sat in the order of Damon, Danag, and Erick.
She smiled at them but the instant she saw Erick's face her smile fell. He actually looked displeased at her presence. The rest of them had bland expressions, nothing was conveyed on their faces.
Mauve immediately looked down, Jael wasn't here and the servants that were in the hall were more than usual but that wasn't the problem, she could still feel everybody's eyes on her. Mauve immediately felt small and wished the ground would open so she could disappear from here.
Her eyes darted towards the door and she prayed that Jael would come in at that moment. He was usually in the dining hall before her. She wondered what was taking so long.
"Princess," Danag broke the silence. Mauve jerked a little and slowly turned her head to look at him, biting her lip as she waited to hear what he would say. "How do you enjoy being at the castle?"
Mauve released the breath she was not even aware of holding. "Very much, actually." She squealed. "It is much better than I anticipated. The lack of sunlight is a bit unnerving but it is nothing I can't…" Erick's face shut her up as she realized she had gotten a little too excited.
"It is fine, really." She tried again. "I am glad to see you all are fine. I heard you were in such poor states because of me."
"Don't flatter yourself, princess. It was safer to take the risk of sunlight than stay another night in the Nolands. It has nothing to do with you, we certainly don't need your pity." Erick admonished.
"Erick!" Danag called.
The vampire threw his head in defiance but his glare never wavered from Mauve's face. Mauve shrank at the direct attack thrown at her. She didn't know what to do with it. She did know that compared to the rest Erick was distant towards her but she had no idea he felt this way about her.
Danag slowly turned his attention toward her. "You do not need to worry about us, princess. As you can see, we are fine."
"Yes, and um…" she paused, she was at loss for words. She did not know what to reply. "That is good, I-I am glad…" Her voice trailed as the door threw open.
The opened door revealed Jael. Mauve didn't think she had ever been happier to see him. Her face broke into a smile but the scowl on it immediately wiped the smile away.
