Chapter 55: 55. Weak, Defenseless, Little Human

Mauve glared at her, "Don't look so shocked. You are the one who said I was starting to look pale."

"Oh, of course," Vae replied, the relief on her face was apparent.

Mauve frowned, "What were you thinking?"

"Nothing. Do you want to go out now?"

"Yes before I undress to sleep. I wanted to stand out in the sun for a while."

"Have you told the Vampire King?" Vae asked.

"No," Mauve replied and brought her head down. "I don't want to cause any trouble and I will only be out for a few minutes." She twirled her hands. "I was wondering if you knew any backdoor."

Vae looked horrified. "You want to sneak out?"

"Vae," Mauve's eyes turned to slit. "Don't make it sound like I want to run away. It's just a brief walk under the sun, a stand," she explained. "I don't want to have to trouble anybody and I don't want to use the front door."

Vae bent her head, "I know there's a door that leads outside in the kitchen as it is easier to clean up but I am not exactly allowed in there. Just ask The Vampire King, I am sure he would let you out in the daylight."

Mauve stared at Vae, "It's just a quick trip. Either that or I will have to stand under my open window. I will just be outside for a couple of minutes. It's nothing to worry about. Thank you." She walked towards the door before Vae would try to stop her.

"Princess," Vae called. "Let me go with you."

"No, get the bath water ready. I should be back soon." She grinned and slipped out the door.

Mauve sped down the stairs. She wanted to be back before Jael found out she was gone. It wasn't that she couldn't ask but she didn't want to trouble him and Vampires couldn't go out in the sun, she would have to do it all by herself.

She got to the kitchen and saw Mill washing the dishes. Yasmin was with her, they were the only vampires in the kitchen. Mauve was grateful for that.

"Mauve," she called, wiping her hands on her apron. "Do you need something?"

Mauve shook her head, "Where is the door that leads outside?"

Mill frowned and looked confused. "Is something wrong?"

"No, I just need to go outside for a few seconds." As she spoke, she walked around looking for a door that looked like the way out.

"Why?" She looked horrified. "It's daylight. I just need to step out…" Mauve's words trailed as she found what she was looking for. She approached the door.

"Mauve you can't…" Mill called.

"I will be right back. Step back." She pulled against the bolt and carefully opened the door so the sunlight wouldn't reach the vampires. She slipped out quickly and closed the door just as fast.

Mauve squinted as she stepped out, it was sunrise. She was still underneath the shade. She couldn't really see what was in front of her as her eyes had not adjusted to the light yet.

She took a step forward and didn't stop walking until she was completely out of the shade. The first thing she noticed was how dry the air was. It wasn't hot dry, it was cool dry.

The surroundings weren't in great shape and the bushes looked like they could use a trim. There were trees scattered around and only the path that led out looked well cared for.

There was a fence made of iron bars and from where she stood she could tell that it surrounded the castle.

She turned around to look at the castle. It was huge, she remembered it being huge but seeing it from the outside told just how huge it was.

She took a step back to study it properly as she bathed in the sun. She felt warm as the sun heated her body. She spun around forgetting that she wanted to check out the castle.

Mauve suddenly had the urge to run but she couldn't, she wasn't supposed to go out for too long. As she enjoyed the feeling of the sun against her skin, she wondered why it took her this long to step out.

She wanted to go round the castle to see what the other side held but she had promised she wouldn't be out for long. The main reason she stepped out was to feel the sun against her skin and she has done that. Though she wasn't satisfied yet, she knew she had to go in.

"Mauve," she heard Mill's voice call to her and she sighed.

It sounded pretty far even though she was just a few steps away from the castle. "I am coming." She replied and walked closer to the door.

She turned the handle and stepped in. She felt someone grab her wrist and pull her through the door, shutting it almost immediately. Mauve jerked and the smell of burnt skin reached her nose.

"Just what were you thinking?" A voice thundered at her. His hand was still on her wrist as Jael yelled at her.

Mauve blinked as her eyes tried to adjust to the darkness. His hands tightened around her wrist and she yelped. He let her go immediately. He had not pressed too hard; it was just the shock that caused her to scream.

She brought her hands to her chest as she felt a slight fear. "I-I just wanted…" It was hard to gather her thoughts with him bearing down on her.

"I wanted to step outside for a few minutes." She tried again.

She couldn't look him in the face, the anger radiating from him made her feel much smaller. It felt like there was actually a force pushing her downwards.

"Without telling me," his voice wasn't loud but the anger in them made it seem like he had a horn to her ears.

"I didn't want to bother anybody. Vampires can't exactly go out in the sun."

"I know," he sounded angrier at this. "You think you can protect yourself out there?"

"There is nothing out here. Its sunlight palers can't attack."

Jael scoffed and walked forward,

Mauve took a step back and her back met the wall. "You are in the Vampire Regions, everything is out there. What would you have done if a wild animal attacked?"

Mauve looked down, "The fence…"

"The fence! Does that look like it holds anything out? Wild animals don't go around attacking vampires, that is why we don't have precautions for them but a weak, defenseless, little human like you. What would you have done?"

He sounded disgusted as he described her and with every word that fell out of his mouth, Mauve felt even smaller.

Mauve looked down, "I didn't know." She bit her lips. She knew she was defenseless and weak but he didn't have to rub it in her face like that. Her eyes watered and she wanted to roll into a ball and cry.

"You didn't know or you didn't want to know."

"I am sorry,"

"Don't apologize to me."

Mauve jerked.

"Go!" He yelled.

She grabbed her dress and fled out of the kitchen. Mill and Yasmin were standing outside the door. They both had shrunken faces. Mauve wondered if Jael had yelled at them.

She wanted to apologize to them but she didn't want them to see the tears that were threatening to run down her face. She skipped all the way to her room. Nearly tripped down the stairs a few times but thankfully, she made it to her room without falling on her face.

She burst into her room and tears fell down her face. Vae rushed to her side, "Princess," she called. "I am so sorry. It is my fault."

Mauve's tears ceased as she realized that Vae was more shaken than she was. She wiped her tears. "It is not your fault, Vae. It is mine. I should have thought more about the situation."

"I should have stopped you."

"You wouldn't have been able to. What happened? You look quite shaken."

"The Vampire King was here and he asked for you. I am sorry, I just couldn't lie. I tried to stall hoping you would return soon but the next thing I knew I was telling him exactly what had happened."

"Did he do anything to you?"

Vae shook her head. "He just left, I could tell he was angry."

"I am sorry," Mauve said and wrapped her arms around Vae. "This is my fault. I should have thought about you. I thought if I didn't drag anybody into it, there wouldn't be any consequences. I also didn't know about the wild animals."

All the blood drained from Vae's face. "There are wild animals around?"

"I am fine, Vae. I promise. It won't happen again."

"I shouldn't have told you about the kitchen."

"It isn't your fault Vae, I would have found out myself. Now, help me get ready for bed. Hopefully, that would take your mind off this."

It was easy to forget her fear when Vae was practically shaking. Vae nodded and led her to the bath.
