Chapter 61: 61. Embarrassed

Mauve woke up slowly. Her body woke up first and then her eyes flew open. Her room was empty and she was all by herself. The first thing she realized was how hungry she was. She looked to her side, the bowl and tray were still in the room. She found this a little odd but didn't think much about it.

Mauve picked a fruit and sank her teeth into it. She let the juice run inside her mouth and she smacked her lips. She dropped the core and rested her back against the headrest.

She stayed in the position for a while as she contemplated moving. She didn't want to have to go outside but she didn't feel sick, staying in bed would just make her feel more down.

She turned to look at the tray and without giving it much thought she stood up from the bed and walked to the wardrobe. If she called for Vae's help, she would most definitely tell her to remain in bed.

She picked a simple dress and slipped into it. There was no way in hell she would put on a corset, she couldn't even put it on alone. Satisfied with her outfit, she picked up the tray and carefully left the room.

She looked toward Jael's door, she doubted he was inside and she hoped not. She did not think she dared to face him after what had happened. She sped down the hallway toward the stairs and quickly made her way down.

She went past the ballroom, past the dining hall. She was headed for the kitchen. She pushed open the kitchen door and froze up as pairs of eyes turned to look at her.

"Mauve," Mill called, breaking the silence.

The rest of the servants continued their chores as Mill approached her. She stepped out of the kitchen and closed the door behind her.

"What are you doing here?" She asked.

Mauve stretched out the tray, now that she was here she realized how stupid this was. "I came to return this," she mumbled.

"You didn't have to," Mill said and accepted it.

"It is fine. I needed a reason to leave the room." She rubbed her hands on her dress, it felt sweaty for some reason.

"Could you point me to Vae's room? I don't want to interrupt." As soon as the word left her lips, Mauve mentally slapped herself. She was already interrupting.

"Um Vae is busy, it is almost time for the second meal so I asked her to take care of a few errands for me."

Mauve frowned and opened her mouth to protest. She could vividly recall Vae telling her numerously that the vampires never gave Vae any task that didn't concern her.

"Would you like your food in your room or the dining hall?" Mill asked before she could say anything.

Mauve paused as she thought about it. "My room, please."

"If you will excuse me, Mauve. I have to return to my chores."

"Oh, I am sorry." Mauve said as she watched Mill leave.

At the sound of the door closing, she turned on her heel and walked back the way she had come. She got to the top of the stairs and instead of going to her room, she climbed up the next flight of stairs.

She got in front of the library and pushed the door. It was dark. Mauve swore. She tried to find her through the darkness with her hands in front of her.

She happily gripped the first shelf that she made contact with. Mauve groaned as she realized, it would be better to go to her room and fetch a lamp but she was already this far gone, she wouldn't give up now.

Her hands ran over the books on the second line. She got to the fifth book and stopped. She gripped it and pulled it out and on second thought pulled out the fifth book directly under. Still not satisfied, she picked the fifth book on the third shelf.

She couldn't be that unlucky thrice, there must be something she could read in at least one of them. With the heavy books in her hands, she headed for her room.

She got down the stairs without incident, thankfully. The books were pretty heavy and by the time she got to the end of the stairs, Mauve's arms were killing her. She got to the door of her room and had to drop the books in front of the door.

She touched the handle and heard his voice directly in her ears, "What are you doing?"

She froze just as her heart skipped a little. She gripped the door tighter as she tried to find her voice. "Trying to get to my room," she muttered but didn't turn around to look at him, she didn't think she had the guts to face him.

"What is this?" He said and picked the book off the floor.

His arm rubbed hers and she jerked. She couldn't tell where had come from, she had been completely unaware of his presence until he spoke to her. Did that mean he was in his room all this while?

"I-I…" She stuttered, the words just wouldn't leave her lips.

"You plan to read all three of them." He asked and stared at the book, turning them around.

"It was dark." She managed to say.

"Won't you look at me?" He asked.

Mauve closed her eyes and slowly turned. She was embarrassed. She was not ready to face him just yet. Now that she knew she wasn't dying anymore, she wanted the ground to swallow her.

She turned around but didn't look at his face. He was close, very close, she didn't realize just how close he was until she turned. Now she was stuck between her closed doors and his body.

He lifted her chin so she had no option but to look up at him. She looked up and her eyes quickly darted back down but she had seen the intense look in his eyes.

"How do you feel?" He asked.

"Fine," Mauve managed to say.

He let go of her chin. "I will help you inside."

"You don't have to." She mumbled and turned the handle.

The door opened and she staggered backward, almost falling. He caught her and pulled her toward him. "I will help you."

Mauve lips sealed whatever protest she wanted to make, he could tell he didn't want to hear it from the way he sounded. She nodded and tried to let go of his grip but he refused to let her go. She could feel him studying her but he didn't say a word.

He slowly let go of her and walked into the room. He walked past her and dropped the book on her dresser.

"Thank you," she said to him and he walked out without a backward glance.

As soon as he walked out, Mauve screamed at herself. She knew he was just concerned and she had treated him in such a crude manner but she had not been ready to see him at the time and the shock was more destabilizing than she had expected.

More than anything, she was embarrassed. Embarrassed that she had not known what to expect, embarrassed that she had caused such a scene. Embarrassed that she had behaved in such a manner.

She shoved the memory into the recess of her mind. She didn't want to remember any part of it. She approached the dresser and picked a book. She hoped she could get engrossed enough to not hear her own thoughts.

I am sure he hates you now and wants nothing to do with such a child. A proper princess would have known what to expect.

Mauve's thoughts yelled at her and she flipped open the pages of the book as though her life depended on it and it did. She read the first line five times and she still couldn't understand what it said.

Mauve closed the book, "By the gods!" She muttered.

Almost immediately a soft knock could be heard on the door. Mauve jumped out of the bed, grateful for the distraction. Instead of saying come in, she ran to the door to pull it open.

"Vae… Oh! Mill?" She quickly composed herself. "I am sorry, I expected Vae to bring my meal."

"It is fine," Mill said and walked into the room. She didn't give further explanation and Mauve didn't know how to ask.

Mauve watched her walk to the side of the bed and drop the tray on the table. Mauve remained by the door and Mill walked back to her.

"Is there anything else you would like?" Mill asked her with a faint smile.

Mauve forced a smile back, "No, thank you."

"Alright Mauve," Mill said and walked out the door.

Mauve slowly approached her bed and got into it. She stared at the food beside her and realized she didn't have much appetite for it.
