Chapter 64: 64. I Can Take Care Of Myself

Mauve sat in front of the dresser as Mill brushed her hair. She closed her eyes as she concentrated on the sensation and how relieving it felt for someone else to brush her hair.

"I don't know if it is any consolation and I know it isn't my place to say but Vae was pretty sad about leaving you here by yourself. She came to me and told me to take care of you." Mill said as she brushed her hair.

"I see," Mauve replied. "I can take care of myself, fine. Thank you. You need not worry."

"Yes, of course."

By the hurried way, Mill had responded Mauve realized the words had sounded harsher than she intended but she didn't have the energy to try to make amends. The fact that Vae could freely talk to a vampire she just met, slightly pissed her off.

"Did she tell why she left?" Mauve asked after some minutes passed.

Mill shook her head, "Nothing specific, only that her job here is done."

"I see," she had no clue what that meant and even Jael had told her the same thing. Not that she cared.

"All done," Mill announced.

"Thank you," Mauve said and stood to her feet, she didn't bother checking her reflection.

"Is there anything you would prefer for the last meal?" Mill asked.

"No," Mauve replied and climbed into her bed.

"Okay, I will be right back with your meal."

Mauve forced a smile as Mill walked out the door. She rested her back against the board and picked up the book she started the day before. At least that might take her mind off her problem.

She was barely two minutes in when she heard a knock on the door. "Come in," she called out.

Mill walked in with a tray, from the bed Mauve could tell it was filled with food. Her suspicions were confirmed when Mill came closer.

"Mill," she cried. "There is no way I can finish all these!"

"You don't have to, I just didn't want you to want something and I didn't bring it to you," she said with a soft grin.

"Thank you, Mill." Mauve said this time her smile was genuine.

"You're welcome, Mauve, please let me know if you need anything else." She nodded and slipped out of the room.

Mauve turned to look at the tray and almost returned to reading but she was starving and she didn't want to know what the alternative Jael had threatened her with would be. She did not need anyone to tell her she wouldn't like it.

She took a spoon of the food, it felt coarse in her mouth but she knew it was probably because she had not eaten all day and her appetite had still not returned.

She took another bite and it tasted better but still not good enough. She forced herself, however, and finished eating in no time. There were still three other bowls of different food but there was no way she could touch them.

She picked up her book and resumed reading. She heard a knock and squinted her eyes. "Come in," she said stiffly and Mill opened the door.

Mauve tried to keep her expression blank but she knew Mill was here to check if she was indeed eating. "Is anything the matter, Mill?" She asked.

"No," she said when she got close enough. "You ate," she sounded surprised.

"Yes," Mauve said.

"You should eat another bowl," she suggested.

"I am good." Mauve returned her attention to the book.

"The fruits, I brought your favorite. Apples and lots of grapes."

"Thank you, Mill. Would that be all?" Mauve asked as she raised her head to look at Mill.

"Yes, I will leave some fruits, just in case you change your mind."

Mauve simply nodded, she could tell there was no point arguing. She bent her head to her book as Mill took care of the dishes. She subtly watched her go without saying a word.

As soon as the door closed, she bent her head again and soon got engrossed in her reading. It was nice to be able to distract herself.

"That must be quite the book," Mauve heard a voice say directly into her ears.

Mauve jerked, screamed, and threw her book simultaneously. She composed herself and saw an amused Jael looking down at her.

"You scared me," she cried.

"I know," he replied and sat on the bed.

He tried to pick up the book and she pulled it out of his grasp. She hid it behind her back.

He raised a brow at her but didn't say a word. "Come with me," he ordered.

"What? Where?" She asked.

He slipped his hand underneath her and lifted her off the bed. Mauve squealed from shock.

"Where are we going?" She cried.

"Shush! You will see." He walked towards the door with her in his arms.

"I can't go out like this, I am not dressed to go outside."

"Don't worry about it, I am sure everybody has settled in bed."

"Where are we going?" She asked again.

"Always so impatient," he said with a wink.

"I am not, you pulled me out of bed. The least you can tell me is where we are going."

"Well, you will find out eventually. So, why not wait?"

Mauve blinked and scoffed. "I can walk you know," she muttered.

"This is faster."

She scoffed some more and folded her hands. She looked away from him as they walked down the stairs. He took it two at a time, carrying her as though she weighed nothing.

This annoyed her but she couldn't protest, she was curious to see what this was about and the fact that Jael was secretive about it made her want to know what it is but she was patient enough to wait.

They got to the ballroom in no time and Jael headed for the front door. Mauve felt a slight panic, she knew the sun was out.

"What are you doing?" She asked and looked up at him.

He smirked at her and using one hand he pulled open the huge doors.
