Chapter 789: 789. Malcolm Has Arrived

It had been a full month since the midwife Madeline and the physician Ferguson arrived at the castle. Time passed faster than Mauve could keep up with it. It was finally time for the guests to make their decision, which would either decide the war against the Palers or flip it in a completely different direction.

Mauve was more anxious as the day grew closer, and Jael tried to make her not worry in more ways than one, but she knew regardless of what he said, unless she knew what the decision was, she wouldn’t feel better. Louis, on the other hand, was awfully quiet about the matter, but it was clear he was concerned.

Mauve made sure not to speak about the matter with Madeline and Ferguson during the past few days. She didn’t want to influence their decision. She had hopes that they had seen that vampires could work hand in hand with humans and the two could be beneficial to each other.

She also needed them to decide for themselves that vampires weren’t all bad and humans didn’t have to be scared of them. However, Mauve would be lying to herself if she fully believed this. She believed it was possible and she hoped one of them would at least see that too.

"I can’t believe it’s been a month already," Mauve said as she sat with Jael in his bedroom. It was theirs now as she couldn’t remember the last time she was in her room.

"You’re still worried about that," Jael said and gently caressed the side of her face as her head rested on the side of his arm. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Mauve’s stomach was much bigger now, and it wasn’t as easy to do some things. It was always funny when she tried to pick things off the ground and would have to rely on servants to help her.

"I can’t help it," she said and rested a hand on her stomach. "My brother Malcolm will be here any day now to find out the decisions they made, and that will decide whether Louis will go with him back to Greenham or we will have to figure this out ourselves."

"And I have told you that neither outcome is cause for worry." He placed his palm over hers.

Mauve jerked a little as the baby reacted. The baby moved about as though it wanted to move closer to their hands. Mauve looked up at Jael with the brightest smile ever, and he gently kissed her on the forehead.

"I know," he said as he moved back. "I can’t wait too." He had easily read her thoughts at the baby’s reaction.

A soft knock on the door of the bedroom drew both their attention. A moment later, Mill walked in with her head bowed. She walked towards them, appearing right in front, and bowed again.

Mauve sat with Jael in a long chair, and that wasn’t the only one in the room. There were at least three other cushioned chairs scattered across the room. One was close to the bed while the other two were set in strategic positions in response to Mauve’s requests.

She couldn’t stay on her feet for long, but that wasn’t the only problem. She also required a different chair each time. Sometimes she wanted it soft, a little hard, or made from leather. Mauve wasn’t trying to be demanding, but she just felt eerily uncomfortable when she didn’t sit in the right chair.

Jael didn’t see anything wrong with her demands and had even made a joke about making a chair with paler skin, if that was what she wanted. Mauve didn’t find that very funny, but she understood what he was implying.

The long chair in the left corner of the room was the only one situated in that area, and Mauve only used it when Jael joined her. She tried her best to leave the room as much as she could, but recently Jael had latched on to her even more than before.

"Sire, my lady, it is almost time for the last meal," Mill said as she stood in front of them.

"Mill," Mauve said with a smile. "Thank you."

"Crown Prince Malcolm has arrived," Mill said casually.

Mauve nearly bolted from her seat. If it weren’t so hard to move about, she would have. It also didn’t help that she felt twice as heavy.

"What?" Mauve yelled. "My brother is here?"

"Yes, my lady," Mill replied.

"How is that possible? It isn’t exactly a day’s trip from Greenham." Mauve’s brows furrowed as she realized something. She turned to look at Jael. "Did you know he was coming?" she asked.

"Yes, and I made sure he got here safely." Jael stood to his feet and stretched out his hand to Mauve.

"Why didn’t you tell me?" she asked in horror.

"I didn’t want to give you another thing to worry about, and your brother is here safe and sound. Isn’t that all that matters?" Jael kept his expression to show he was only full of concern about Mauve on the matter.

"If I had told you," he continued before she could reply, "you would have been bothered about his safety until he arrived."

Mauve couldn’t dispute this. She was still annoyed that he had kept it from her, but it wasn’t exactly a secret, as she had expected to have gotten some kind of response from Malcolm in respect to the situation. Either he would send a messenger, or he would have appeared himself.

"Still," she said, not admitting so easily, "I would have liked to know."

She reluctantly accepted his outstretched hand, which he didn’t retract even though she didn’t accept it at first. He gently pulled her to her feet and resisted the urge to kiss her; rather, he concentrated on making sure she was comfortable being on her feet.

Mauve was already thrice her size, and he was worried that she might burst at any moment. She was already very close to the nine months it took humans to give birth, but he could tell the baby wasn’t ready just yet. There was no doubt about it, the pregnancy would be as long as it took a vampire to give birth.

Jael carefully placed his hand behind Mauve’s lower back as he held onto her. She leaned into him, and he held her steady. He couldn’t imagine how tiring and exhausting it must be for her. Any way he could make the load lighter, Jael would do it in a heartbeat.

"Where is my brother?" Mauve asked.

"The servants are escorting him to his quarters. He assured me that he would join us for the last meal."

Mauve pouted as she walked forward. "He didn’t even ask to see me."

Jael smiled behind her. "He will see you during mealtime. I’m sure he wants to look his best to see you. The journey from Greenham must have been quite hectic. It is only proper that he would freshen up before he presented himself."

Mauve was still not satisfied with Jael’s words. She was still a little annoyed, even though she could see reasons for his words, but she was still sentimental about not being told about the plans.

Mill lingered closely as they made their way to the dining room. She followed them to the dining hall even though there was no need to and didn’t leave until Mauve was comfortably seated. With Mauve getting close to her due date, Mill tried to make sure nothing was amiss.

However, the state of Mauve’s pregnancy was not the only reason she did this. Mealtimes were the only period she could sneak a peek at Lord Louis. She rarely ran into him anymore, and she was fully convinced he was avoiding her.
