The Vampire King's Possession-Chapter 798. Darcy
Mauve groaned in discomfort, shaking her head as she tried to pull out of the fog she was trapped in. She could hear faint crying, and something told her she needed to wake up right now.
However, it felt so nice to just settle in the fog where there was no pain or discomfort, but the crying persisted, and it felt as though she was being pulled by an invisible string.
The force was so compelling that the more she ignored it, the worse she felt—which was odd, as the fog was without pain, yet she didn’t feel better. So she fought until her head was above the fog and her eyes flew open.
Jael sat in front of her, holding a crying bundle in his arms. It was so small compared to his huge frame, and he held it delicately, as though it were the most precious thing in the world.
Mauve felt her heart swell just before the pain hit her like an avalanche. It was so intense she had to bite down on her lips to keep from screaming.
As if sensing her discomfort, Jael jerked his head up immediately. "Mauve," he cried, leaning forward. Then, turning his head to the side, he yelled, "She is awake!"
The midwife rushed from the corner to Mauve. She dropped to her knees so she could see Mauve eye to eye as she lay on the bed.
Mill also moved closer and said, "My Lady."
"How do you feel?" Madeline asked. "Tell me where the pain hurts the most."
"It just hurts," she mumbled.
"I know," Madeline said.
"Is that my baby?" Mauve asked with a heavy voice, staring past Madeline. She realized she didn’t even have the strength to sit up, but she wanted to hold her baby.
"Yes, my lady. You gave birth to a baby boy, a very healthy boy."
Mauve’s eyes softened as Jael moved closer, tilting the bundle he held so she could get a proper view. Mauve felt her heart squeeze in her chest at the sight before her.
Her baby was wailing with all his might, his nose scrunched up, and a mop of white and black hair covered his forehead. His eyes were also tightly shut as he cried with all his might.
"Why is he crying so much?" she mumbled, forcing her hands to move, but they felt weightless, as though they weren’t a part of her.
"He is hungry. You lost a lot of blood, but you’ve stabilized. I have never seen anything like it," she said the last part more to herself than to Mauve. "I will give you the herbs the physician made. They should help with the pain. You will still feel sore for a few days, but right now, you need to feed the baby."
"Okay," Mauve said. All she wanted to do was hold him in her arms.
Mill moved closer and helped Mauve into a more comfortable position, using pillows to support her and keep her upright, while Jael walked closer with the baby.
He got into bed and sat next to her before gently placing the hungry baby into her outstretched arms. As soon as she held him, he immediately stopped crying, as if noticing her presence, and opened his eyes.
Mauve was greeted with the brightest blue color she had ever seen, and he blinked as though trying to get a proper look at her.
"He has your eyes," Mauve said with a hitch in her throat.
"He does, and he has your hair," Jael replied.
Mauve sniffled as she fought the urge to cry. Just before she blacked out during labor, she had thought she would never see her baby—or worse, that he was in danger because of her. But here he was, alive and well.
He pouted his lips and looked as if he might cry, as though to remind them of his purpose. Jael chuckled, and Mauve brought his lips against her breast. He was quick to latch on, and the midwife let out a sigh of relief as he began to suckle.
Almost immediately, all the distress left his face, and he relaxed into her arm, sucking gently. Mauve found that she couldn’t stop looking at him. She was still in awe that this was her baby—he was their baby.
"Darcy sure likes to eat," Jael said after some time, as the baby was still hungrily drinking.
Mauve looked at him with wide eyes. "Yes," she said with giddy excitement. "He is Darcy."
"Why are you shocked?" he asked as he rubbed his head against the side of her face. "You chose his name."
"I did," Mauve said with a small smile. If she had more strength, she would have reached out to touch him, but she was barely holding onto the baby.
"I was worried," Jael said against her face as his head fell to the crook of her neck. "I’m glad you’re okay."
"I am," she said and tilted her head so she could get a look at his face.
Jael raised his gaze, and his eyes glimmered with unshed tears. Mauve couldn’t help but wonder how long she had been unconscious. The room had been cleaned up; she could smell the soap, both in the room and on herself.
Her garments had also been changed; she was wearing something comfortable, a light-colored, free-flowing dress.
Jael must have been worried. She couldn’t imagine how devastating it would have been for her mate if something bad had truly happened to her. Jael would never have forgiven himself, and she couldn’t bear to see him like that, so she was glad that she was all right.
"He is asleep," the midwife said and attempted to take the baby from Mauve.
"Can I hold him for a bit?" she softly asked.
The midwife looked surprised but immediately nodded. "Of course. I will get you the herbs and something to eat, but please don’t push yourself. If something feels wrong, please let me know."
Mauve nodded and smiled at her. The midwife nodded and exited the room, while Mill stood in the corner, just in case Mauve needed anything.
Not long after Madeline left, the door opened and Lady Marceline walked in. "Mauve," she said as soon as she walked through the doors. "You’re awake." She looked genuinely relieved as she approached the bed.
"Lady Marceline," Mauve said with a smile.
"Please call me Grand Aunty."
"We are not related," Jael replied.
"Jael," Mauve scolded. "Don’t say that."
"Oh, my little grand nephew. He looks like his mother," she said and leaned closer. "Thank goodness."
Mauve chuckled, and Jael instantly looked offended, but he didn’t say anything, just adjusted her so she could completely lean on him while holding the baby, and he could support her. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"How do you feel?" Lady Marceline asked.
Mauve raised her head. "Sore," she mumbled. "But I will be fine," she quickly added to assure everyone present. She didn’t want them to worry too much about her.
"Good," Lady Marceline said with a soft nod, and Mauve could tell she meant it.
Madeline soon returned with the herbs and food. To eat, Mauve had to let someone else carry her baby. She wasn’t very pleased about it, but she didn’t fight it, as getting better as quickly as possible was the only way she could ensure she would be able to spend every waking moment with her son. She had to get better for his sake.
After she was done eating and cleaned up, only then was she allowed to receive male guests. Louis wouldn’t stop teasing her, but it was clear he was happy to see her.
Mauve wouldn’t stop calling him Uncle Louis, and she knew that was the only way she would address him moving forward. Even Lord Alaric had made an appearance.
He had been excited by the baby and had requested to hold him. Mauve didn’t miss the glances he exchanged with his mate, and she smiled lovingly at him.
After all was said and done, they left the room to give her some time to rest, including Mill, but Jael didn’t leave. He stayed in bed with her, and Mauve couldn’t help but feel very content. She truly did have the best family now.
Jael kissed the top of her head. "You should try to sleep," he said. "I won’t leave you, not for a moment."
"I know," she said and cozied closer to him. "I love you."
"I love you more," Jael said as he hugged her.
Mauve giggled. "I would argue that."
"And you would lose," he whispered.
Mauve wanted to speak more, but she could feel herself growing even more drowsy, and her eyes slowly closed as she drifted off to sleep. It was easy to do so because she knew when she woke up, the man she loved and their baby would be waiting for her.
