Chapter 168 -Five: Dance of Demons

Secluded in his guest room, Green, with his eyes closed in contemplation, could sense his companion’s displeasure from the footsteps echoing from afar. As the door swung open, the incoming wave of murderous intent mingled with the scent of magic power further confirmed his judgment. It seemed his companion had been up to something again today, though it was unclear who the unlucky soul would be this time. Nearly every outing of his companion brought about storms and strife, yet it was precisely this that had established his notoriety as the Knight Murder King among the Knights regiment, earning the deep-seated hatred of the dark practitioners.

“What’s the matter? Have you come across some valuable clues?” Green glanced at his partner nonchalantly, then picked up a gleaming glass and took a sip. Pure water was the holiest of substances to wash away dust and grime, both ordinary and indispensable. Green adhered to asceticism, believing that only by controlling the desires within could one truly master oneself, and thus travel farther on the Supreme Bright Path.

“Green, it looks like we’ve really hit the mark this time. This Caucasus really is not that simple. In this period of time, all sorts of monstrous creatures have emerged. I’ve just encountered two overt Great Mysterium Devotees. After a brief contact, I didn’t expect both of them to be quite formidable, and they actually slipped away. However, I’m certain they haven’t left Ugru yet,” Jep’s eyes constantly shimmered with bright luster, overflowing with boundless vigor and enthusiasm apparent through those eyes.

“Oh? The Great Mysterium Sect? They have reached out this far?!” Green was also startled.

Upon reflection, if the Great Mysterium Sect dared to infiltrate a core area of the Continent like Rosenborg, then the Caucasus, a newly developed land with an influx of over a hundred thousand immigrants and still growing, was an opportunity the sect wouldn’t miss. Moreover, the present Lord’s identity was a mystery. If the Great Mysterium Sect were to collude with the new Lord, then not only would their own mission have no end in sight, but the Caucasus might become a beachhead for the sect’s invasion into Nicosia and the rest of the Northern Alliance.

After pondering for a while, Knight Green caressed the scabbard by his side and said, “What do you think we should do?”

“To cut the problem at its root, I think we can put forth our reasons to the Lord, requesting an immediate comprehensive investigation in Ugru to prevent any Great Mysterium Sect members from slipping through the net—at least forcing them off this land. On the other hand, I believe it’s necessary to report the situation here to Corps Commander and even the Archbishop. If we allow the Great Mysterium Sect to freely breed and spread here, it won’t take long for this land to change its color, and the mission assigned to us will equally remain unfinished. However, our current strength is too weak to handle the complex situation on this land,” Jep said.

Although Jep was quite confident in his abilities, he was not someone who failed to recognize the gravity of a situation and never underestimated his enemies.

“Green, the last time we met with the Lord, his two friends present at the event, I also felt something was off. Those two were clearly suppressing their power intentionally. Even though the Spiritual Sense could not detect anything unusual about them, why would ordinary mages need to suppress or conceal themselves in our presence? But without the chance for further contact, we can’t know anything more valuable,” Jep said.

“So Jep, do you think there’s something wrong with this Lord?” Instead of answering his question, Green asked back.

After hesitating for a moment, Jep was also uncertain. “By all accounts there shouldn’t be anything wrong. I activated the Spiritual Sense Probe when I shook his hand, and even if he was concealing something, he shouldn’t have been able to escape my detection, but I found nothing. He does possess considerable magic power, particularly solid Fire Elemental Magic Power. Yet, I detected no hint of darkness. This only makes me more suspicious whether he can really be so clean. My instinct tells me it shouldn’t be the case.”

“Instinct? But instinct can’t serve as evidence. We can’t use our instincts as proof in reports to Corps Commander and the Archbishop. My feeling is the same as yours, and my Light Spirit Eye equally found nothing, but instinct says otherwise. If it were someone else, perhaps we could take special measures, but we can’t risk it with this man. His identity doesn’t permit us to take liberties, and besides, he is a Mage himself. And those two people by his side right now are not to be trifled with, I’m afraid Corps Commander and Archbishop would find it equally difficult to make a decision upon hearing our report,” Green said.

With a light sigh, a trace of melancholy showed on Green’s normally unruffled face, “As for your suggestion that we ask him to help with the investigation of the Great Mysterium Sect, I think it’s unfeasible. We can’t even confirm the identity of the Lord now; to rashly make such a request would only spook the target and would be quite unwise.”

“Then what are you suggesting…?” Jep held great respect for his partner. Green’s wisdom was among the most notable in the entire Knights regiment, and it was for his composure and sagacity that Captain Kent had entrusted him with such a challenging task.

“Firstly, we’ll report the current situation here to Corps Commander and the Archbishop. From any standpoint, our Church of Light should not give up on this land, and I trust the higher-ups will make a reasonable arrangement. As for our own mission, it seems the Lord is not one to sit still amidst the chaotic dance of demons; I’m curious to see what other performances he has in store!” A firm look crossed Green’s determined face as he faced the warm Sunshine, looking exceptionally clear.
