Chapter 114: Chapter 114: Argument

The tour guide slowly walked to the buckets and began the count.

"Margaret Jennings’s team: 7 colored balls.

Chelsea Raines’s team: 3 colored balls. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Ruby Preston’s team: 12 colored balls.

Renee Jennings’s team: 13 colored balls.

Naomi Kenway’s team..."

The tour guide paused, surprised. "Sixteen colored balls!"

He announced, "So the winner of this round is..."

"Impossible!" Renee Jennings interrupted him. She took a few steps forward to confirm the number of colored balls in Naomi Kenway’s bucket, finding it all the more unbelievable. "How is this possible?!"

Her hand shaking, she pointed a finger at Naomi Kenway, her expression tragic and indignant. "I didn’t want to do this, but you’ve gone too far! Are you just going to make fools of the other guests like this? I don’t mind for myself. I can take a little injustice and let Nina have this one, but what about the other guests? Do they have to endure this unfairness too?"

Renee Jennings walked toward Naomi Kenway, her eyes filled with a mix of resentment and malice.

"She barely ran any laps just now, anyone with eyes can see that. How could there be so many colored balls in her bucket?"

Naomi Kenway frowned, shielding Ian behind her. "Renee Jennings, if you have something to say, say it calmly. Don’t scare the child."

"You want me to say it calmly? Don’t use the child to guilt-trip me. Nina, I really can’t stand you anymore. You always use any means necessary to snatch things that don’t belong to you!"

Thinking of her failed audition, new and old grudges piled up, and Renee Jennings’s eyes were so venomous they could almost shoot fire.

"You need proof to make accusations like that. Don’t just make things up. Why don’t you tell me what I’ve snatched from you? If you can’t, I can sue you for slander." Naomi Kenway’s tone was light, but her gaze was incredibly sharp as she stared at Renee Jennings.

"You’re playing dumb!" Renee Jennings’s eyes filled with tears.

It was a rare, explosive argument between guests. The cameramen scrambled to get close-ups, maximizing the sense of conflict between the two.

Ruby Preston came over to mediate the dispute. She took Renee Jennings’s hand. "Calm down."

Renee Jennings shook her hand off. "Director Preston, oh Director Preston, you two are so close," she said through gritted teeth, her words laden with insinuation.

Ruby Preston was baffled, not knowing when she had offended her.

The tour guide was also a bit stunned. Naomi Kenway was indeed much slower than the other guests, so the large number of colored balls in her bucket was certainly unexpected.

But he also knew that their parent-child variety show had absolutely no scripted drama; its main appeal was authenticity.

He looked toward the director, who slowly walked over. He had been watching the ultra-HD cameras from the back and naturally hadn’t missed a single one of Naomi Kenway and Ian’s movements.

Chelsea Raines said, "Director, you have to give us an explanation."

The director looked at Naomi Kenway. "Ms. Kenway, could you and Ian please repeat the process of how you just collected the colored balls?"

Having been pointed at and yelled at by Renee Jennings, Naomi Kenway wasn’t happy about it either. She scoffed, "I did nothing wrong. Why should I have to prove it?"

Renee Jennings instantly shot back, "Because you have a guilty conscience!"

In the end, the director had them watch the replay.

From the side view, it was a blind spot when Ian was holding the balls. But once magnified in a close-up, you could clearly see three colored balls bulging in his arms, wedged between him and Naomi Kenway’s back.

The director played the entire process on fast-forward. On every trip, Ian was holding three colored balls.

The other guests had been in such a hurry, focused only on their own ball-carrying tasks, that they hadn’t noticed what was actually happening on Naomi Kenway’s side. Now, the mystery was finally solved.

Carina Sanders looked on with admiration. "Little Ian is so smart! He’s so small, yet he can carry three colored balls!"

Renee Jennings looked embarrassed. After a moment, she said, "That’s against the rules! How can he carry three colored balls at once!"

Ruby Preston said, "It should be allowed, right? Sean carries two every trip."

Naomi Kenway smiled at her, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? When was that rule made? Don’t tell me you’re the one who made it?"

The tour guide explained, "There was indeed no such rule."

Renee Jennings’s face was ashen. She forced a smile and sidled up to Naomi Kenway as if to be friendly. "I had no idea Ian was so smart. Nina, you’ve really taught him well!"

Naomi Kenway wasn’t buying her act at all. Holding Ian, she took a step back and said with a teasing smile, but with barbs hidden in her eyes, "Just a moment ago, you looked vicious enough to eat me alive. I’m really not used to this change."

Renee Jennings froze. ’I’m already bowing my head and trying to curry favor, and she’s still not accepting it?’ She did her best to maintain the smile on her face. "It’s all my fault for being too reckless. Isn’t it enough that I’m apologizing to you? It’s all my fault. I’m sure that with Nina’s magnanimity, you’ll definitely forgive me."

"So according to you, forgiving you makes me magnanimous, and not forgiving you makes me wicked and evil?"

Naomi Kenway shot her a sidelong glance, her face expressionless.

"That’s not what I meant..."

"Then what did you mean? You said so many vicious things, and you think a flimsy ’sorry’ is enough to turn the page? Is the cost of making a mistake that low?"

Chelsea Raines walked over, seemingly at the end of her patience. "Naomi Kenway, don’t go too far! Everyone makes mistakes. Renee wasn’t doing it on purpose. It was just a misunderstanding!"

"A misunderstanding? By your logic, if I ’accidentally’ slapped her and then apologized, she’d forgive me too?"

Stared at by Naomi Kenway’s sharp gaze, Renee Jennings felt a chill for no reason, but she still tried to smooth things over. "Of course. If it was just an accident, I would forgive you, naturally."

The moment she finished speaking, a hand came flying toward her.

Renee Jennings screamed and took a step back.

But the slap never landed. It stopped just an inch from her face.

Naomi Kenway couldn’t help but laugh out loud. She patted Renee’s cheek lightly, the touch gentle. "Relax. I’m perfectly lucid. I don’t go around biting and slandering people like a mad dog."

The cool touch grazed her cheek, and Renee Jennings couldn’t help but shiver.

Chelsea Raines said frantically, "Naomi Kenway, you’ve gone too far!"

"I was just joking with you. Renee, you’re so magnanimous, you surely won’t blame me, right?"

There wasn’t a hint of sincerity in her words, only pure malice and mockery.

For some reason, Renee Jennings didn’t dare to look into Naomi Kenway’s eyes again. Her lips were a little pale. "Of, of course..."

She had originally thought Naomi Kenway was a very focused and serious person, who only ever paid attention to her own son. Only now did Renee Jennings realize that Naomi was not as harmless as she seemed. Her claws were incredibly sharp.

"Once or twice is fine, but I don’t like people constantly pointing their fingers and yelling at me." Naomi Kenway smiled. "Understand?"

"I understand..." Renee Jennings’s voice sounded as if it were squeezed through her teeth. Even she didn’t know why her entire imposing aura vanished without a trace whenever she faced Naomi Kenway.

[So cool! That’s how you handle a holier-than-thou manipulator!]

[No matter what, Renee Jennings shouldn’t have been pointing her finger and yelling at someone. No wonder Naomi Kenway got angry. This is so satisfying to watch!]
