The Villainess Wants a Divorce:Beast Husbands Regret It to Tears-Chapter 113: Has She Really Fallen for Him?
She paused for a moment, her tone softening a bit.
"I just smelled something delicious and got curious, wanted to ask what ingredients they used, how they made it... too many people make it noisy and it’s hard to relax."
She thought that visiting to ask for advice should be a friendly and natural thing.
If she brought a large group of people, it would feel more like they were inspecting instead.
Besides, she and Jasper Quinn had just met not long ago.
They were still getting to know each other, so they needed to be considerate and leave some room.
But to the Beast Husband’s ears, her words took on a different meaning.
Gideon Larkin’s action of lifting his foot suddenly froze.
The back that was just now standing straight suddenly slumped down.
Even the beast ears drooped down, losing their usual liveliness and alertness.
He clenched his fist, his knuckles turning white, his throat bobbing as he ultimately did not step forward.
"Who said we wanted to steal his stuff... we were just... going to take a look..."
Seraphina Caldwell had never stopped them; this was the first time she spoke up for an outsider.
Gideon Larkin felt a pang in his heart, a strange sourness that filled his chest with unease.
That rabbit had a low level, a frail body, and didn’t look like he had any combat strength, except those long ears were somewhat pleasing to the eye.
Could she possibly really have taken a liking to him?
This thought flashed through his mind, making him feel an inexplicable tightness in his chest.
Isaac Vaughn stopped walking.
The wind brushed through the forest, lifting a wisp of hair on his forehead.
This was the first time she stopped them for an outsider.
A piece of his heart suddenly felt empty, both heavy and swollen.
Wyatt Yardley carried Seraphina Caldwell to Jasper Quinn’s small cottage, catching sight of him crouching by the fire, carefully turning something roasting on a stick.
The tip of the stick was embedded in fruit skin, moving delicately.
It was a large, watermelon-like round fruit with a dark green skin marked with light brown spots.
Though it looked hard, once roasted, its surface shone with an oily gloss.
The edges of the fruit’s skin curled up slightly, splitting into tiny cracks from which golden yellow juice seeped out.
Steam rose up, carrying a unique sweet fragrance.
The scent mixed with the smoke was even more enticing.
Seraphina Caldwell’s stomach made a quiet noise.
She didn’t even notice it, only feeling that she was completely captivated by the aroma.
The fire crackled, occasionally sending sparks flying.
Seraphina Caldwell’s eyes lit up as she leaned forward, nearly reaching out from Wyatt Yardley’s arms.
She instinctively grabbed Wyatt Yardley’s arm, her fingertips exerting a little force, as if afraid she might really fall.
"Take it easy."
Wyatt Yardley softly reminded her, tightening his arms slightly to support her securely.
So it was a fruit!
Not wheat, yet it could yield the fragrance of wheat upon roasting!
A flood of thoughts raced through her mind.
Could this fruit be made into flour?
Either sour or sweet, she had never seen anything as fragrant as a staple food.
Some fruits, though filling, were astringent and bitter, and eating too much would make one nauseous.
But this one, just the smell gave her a comforting feeling.
Jasper Quinn heard the commotion and looked up, locking eyes with Seraphina Caldwell, who was being held by Wyatt Yardley.
As his gaze landed on that familiar and striking face, his heart skipped a beat, almost making him drop the stick into the fire.
"Seraphina, you... why are you here?"
His face turned red like a freshly steamed sweet potato, the pair of rabbit ears atop his head "whoosh" up.
He instinctively tried to press down the ears, but the more nervous he got, the less control he had, standing there awkwardly.
Seraphina Caldwell had her gaze momentarily caught by the ears, then quickly looked away.
"What kind of fruit is this? Why is it so fragrant?"
Jasper Quinn followed her gaze to the top of the golden small fruit, and the embarrassment on his face quietly faded a bit.
"This is a Pinecone, something unique to our Rabbit Clan."
He straightened his chest slightly, a hint of pride in his voice.
"Nowhere else can you find them; they grow deep in the shaded pine forests and bear fruit only once every three years."
He gently prodded the fruit skin.
"Don’t be fooled by the hard exterior; the inside is soft. When raw, it’s pale and a bit astringent. Once roasted, it turns yellow, becoming tender and sticky, sweet and fragrant. Would you like to try it?"
As he spoke, he took a clean, thick leaf from a bamboo basket beside the fire, using it to carefully remove the fruit from the stick.
The heat hit his fingertips, but he didn’t feel it was hot, only eager for Seraphina Caldwell to taste it soon.
The scent of wheat combined with the wood smoke headed straight to her nostrils, making her crave intensely.
She swallowed subconsciously, her throat bobbing slightly.
But she thought to herself, she and Jasper Quinn had just met.
Receiving something for free felt inappropriate.
She hesitated, then raised her eyes to Wyatt Yardley, as if seeking his opinion.
"Wyatt... why don’t we trade some Beast Skin with him for some? I’d like to taste this fruit."
Wyatt Yardley looked down at her, the high bridge of his nose outlined by the campfire’s light, his face still holding remnants of his earlier wariness towards Jasper Quinn.
This gesture slightly eased his heart.
She understood very well, knowing her boundaries, and understood that it wasn’t appropriate to get too involved with this mysterious rabbit man.
"No need to be so formal. He won’t ask you to trade Beast Skin just for a fruit. Eat it first, if you like it, have more, and thank him later."
On the surface, these words were to reassure her, allowing her to accept the gift without worry.
But in fact, they were a hint to Jasper Quinn.
Don’t think that giving small favors would close the distance, and don’t harbor inappropriate thoughts.
When Jasper Quinn first heard the words "trade Beast Skin," his heart felt suddenly empty.
He initially thought she would be like others, reaching out without hesitation.
But not her; instead, she proposed a trade.
This restraint and sense of propriety startled him.
Looking into her clear eyes, he suddenly realized this female was not only beautiful in appearance but also genuine in thought.
She wasn’t greedy, didn’t take advantage, knew manners, and understood boundaries.
Hearing Wyatt Yardley’s words, he immediately nodded in agreement, a smile spreading across his face, his tone becoming particularly cheerful.
"Yes, it’s just a fruit, not worth trading for. Go ahead and eat, don’t be so polite with us."
Saying so, he lowered his head and carefully cut a small piece from the sizzling fruit.
As the knife slid through the fruit, steam rose up, and a scent of mixed grains and toast filled the air.
He held the small piece of fruit flesh on a clean leaf, cautiously presenting it to her, lest it scald her.
Seraphina Caldwell reached out with her fingers, feeling the warm edge of the fruit.
She took a gentle bite, and the fruit melted in her mouth.
The taste was just like the white steamed buns she had eaten before!
Just lacking the fluffy fermentation, with a more solid texture.
Chewing it was full of elasticity, becoming more fragrant the longer she chewed.
Wasn’t this just wild barley?
If she could gather enough seeds and grind them into flour, couldn’t she make buns, pancakes?
Maybe... she might even try making noodles!
She couldn’t help but nod repeatedly, her lips curling upwards uncontrollably.
"Delicious! Truly delicious! More filling than roasted meat! This fruit is amazing! It’s the king of staple foods!"
"Jasper Quinn, I still want to trade some Beast Skin for more Pinecones. Can I? I... I really like them."
