Chapter 435: City of Emberlynx

Close to two weeks later the ship finally got close to the shores of Zeravon. They were finally out of the endless stretch of ocean and land was finally close.

During the short period they sailed together Abrielle had grown a soft spot for Cedric after days of nursing him. She had hoped every day that there would be an improvement in his condition, but things were not looking good for Cedric.

The potions Roselia had given them to handle the pain are running out quickly. The only light source at the end of this dark tunnel was their arrival at Heliosa.

A loud horn rang as the ship made the shore, and many passengers were already ready to leave. Their group gathered on the deck a few minutes before they got to shore.

They had so many questions on their minds concerning Cedric. They were curious about Cedric’s condition. The question lingered on their tongue but they differed from asking.

"The City of Emberlynx, " Abrielle muttered. They were leaving the ship that berthed at the capital of Heliosa, the city of flames, Emberlynx.

The empire started from Emberlynx before it took years to grow and take over almost the entire continent of Zeravon.

"It seems busier than the last night I was here. " Cedric mentioned. He was dressed in brown to blend in with the merchant and a scarf wrapped around his face. It didn’t look off that he had a scarf around his face because of an ancient ethnic group local to Heliosa that dressed the same way.

For them to blend better, Abrielle dressed similarly, but in a feminine version where she had a lace scarf instead. On the outside, there wasn’t a noticeable difference in his appearance.

He was a bit paler, his skin had grown a bit cold and he had lost some weight. "Have you been to Emberlynx before?" She asked him, her eyes curiously searching around the busy ports.

The port was frequented by foreigners and the security was very tight. There was no way they could cross to the city without inspection and the royal not finding out about Cedric’s presence.

Abrielle was holding onto a faint strand of hope. They had to get into Emberlynx and find the healer Roselia’s father wrote to. She had to find a solution to Cedric’s condition. From the information she held, the healer lived around the border of the city.

A cough itched to leave his throat. Cedric quickly covered his mouth with a clean handkerchief to cough into. Abrielle’s hold on his hand tightened, and he started coughing a few days back, which was clearly a bad sign. "Sorry, don’t stress yourself too much." She muttered ..

He coughed for a while, and the entire group was distressed by how unhealthy the cough sounded. Cedric pulled away the clean cloth from his mouth and nose, there were obvious red stains on it. Evidence of how much the poison had spread through his veins.

"Maybe we should rest a bit before thinking about how to leave the port. The entire perimeter is being monitored." Evelyn suggested a frown was etched on her face. ..

The exiled prince shook his head. "No, we should proceed to the gates. We should make our presence noticeable from arrival not to make them suspicious of any ill intentions." Cedric suggested. They all listened to him, trusting his judgement, and then started moving to the port gates through the traffic of people.

"The last time I was here was 8 years ago, after a few years on the battlefield. I was sent as a diplomat for the crown prince’s coming-of-age ceremony. I was 15 at that time." Normally, a noble has a coming-of-age ceremony held at their 16th birthday when they are officially introduced to society.

"Did you meet the crown prince of Heliosa then?" Abrielle asked him out of curiosity. If things are still the way she knew. The crown prince of Heliosa, although he was a mysterious figure she didn’t talk much about in the book she wrote, was a year older than Cedric. She wasn’t sure what he would look like since imagination didn’t always fit reality.

For unexplained reasons, Cedric and he were never on the same page. He was the first to kick against Cedric when Cedric started to lose his mind. He convinced the king of Heliosa not to side with Cedric. She was interested in the possible backstory between these characters.

Cedric’s gaze turned distant, "It isn’t one of my best memories, but I did meet him. He is one of the reasons I was against coming here. Let’s say our first meeting was memorable for the wrong reasons." Cedric explained with a light laugh that didn’t reach his eyes.

He was finally going to meet that bastard he went to a great deal to avoid. They got to the gate and met a very long queue that made Abrielle worried.

"Why is there a queue today?" She overheard an onlooker complain.

"I have no idea but it is related to the royal family. This will take a while." Another person complained. There was a subtle change in Cedric’s demeanour once he saw the queue as if he knew what waited at the end.

"No scarves or masks are allowed. Please take them off for inspection." A soldier’s voice boomed. This attracted a lot of complaints. It was out of character.

"Why are they interested in scarves?" Abrielle complained. Her frown deepened. Cedric sighed. "They are looking for someone more like they expect." He mentioned. Cedric’s statement made her nervous.

Their group wasn’t in a single position but was generally scattered across the queue. Cedric and Abrielle were the only ones close to each other.

When it got to Abrielle’s and Cedric’s turn, the first thing that drew the soldier’s attention was her ginger hair. "Please pull off the scarf for inspection or you will be apprehended and refused entry." The soldier instructed.

Abrielle glanced at Cedric. She had no issue taking off the scarf, but Cedric was right behind her. She nervously glanced at him. The soldiers sensed her resistance and were ready to take her away at any point.

Cedric stepped up and spoke. "My wife is nervous. We will prefer a private inspection." He spoke out. The soldier was insistent, seeing no reason they needed a private inspection.

"You will have to take them off here. Those are my orders. " He insisted. He saw no need for common merchants to need any special attention.

Cedric’s hold tightened on her wrist. "I am sorry we can’t." He wasn’t going to take off his scarf in a public place.
