The Wolfless Luna's Revenge: Returning With His Secret Twins-Chapter 267
[SAMANTHA’s Point of View]
I was so baffled by my actions as I stared at Dominic’s shocked face.
Devon stared at me with confusion, worried about what had happened to me. I had no courage to explain, so I awkwardly pulled away from my husband’s arms.
All I did was to embrace myself as I averted my eyes and walked away from Devon and Dominic. I tried to get as far as I could from them, trying to avoid the pain I saw on their faces as I looked for Rey.
There was a part of me that wanted to apologize for what I did and said, but my anxiety was too strong, and I couldn’t bear to look at them. I felt awful about what I did, and I needed space to think and reflect on my feelings. I had to go.
Not far from the camp, I quickly spotted Rey giving instructions to the Gamma soldiers. I had no idea how he got to command them and make them obey his orders, but I figured it was Liam who must have told the soldiers to do what the Queen’s Guard asked of them to retrieve us from this place.
He turned around as soon as he felt my presence behind him. He was old. But his senses were still sharp like a young shifter.
“H-How did you know we are here?”
“It’s not hard to know what you and your family are doing,” Rey answered with a slight smile, but I noticed the worry in his eyes as he saw the wounds and bruises that were slightly yellowing.
I seemed to be immune to the curse. What made me dizzy was the poison they put on their claws to slow my husband and me down. But as I started to regain my strength, the poison slowly flushed out of my system. It’s like my blood purifies the curse and protects me from it.
“It’s not difficult to know what you and your family are doing,” Rey answered. His face was grim as he turned away from me and looked toward the camp where Richard Bennette had fled and hidden.
All of a sudden, I remembered Killian, and my eyes widened in fear. I asked in distress. “Killian followed him through the Wolf Tomb! Do you think Killian managed to capture the old traitor? Have you sent the Gamma soldiers to check inside?”
“No. I think they won’t be able to get inside since the doors of the Wolf Tomb require a special ritual as a key to open them, and I believe you know that.” Rey answered in a deep voice, frowning. “But there is something I found out.”
That piqued my interest as I lifted my face to look at him. “What is it?” I asked nervously.
“I discovered something after you left the Black Forest last night,” he answered in a serious tone, straightening his back, and then sighing deeply as if it were something heavy to explain.
“Tell me, Rey. Don’t scare me like that.” I was starting to feel a little annoyed when he couldn’t explain it straight to my face.
“Well, not too far from the Wolf Tomb, behind the mausoleum, I saw an underground tunnel that led to a chamber I never expected to see there. I was baffled to find out that it had been there all this time, and I didn’t notice. But there was an altar there. Newly built. It is made of obsidian and black crystals that I had never seen before. It’s like it was constructed meticulously for something special.”
My heart pounded hard in my chest as I listened to Rey. I never wanted to think that it was built for my twins, but my intuition told me it was. And it terrified me.
He continued. “After my deliberate study of the runes and scriptures carved at the altar, I found out that it was built to sacrifice the ‘keys’ set in three days from now. Under the full moon.”
“So that’s the reason why Bennette decided to build a camp in front of the Wolf Tomb, not because he wanted to get inside there so badly, but because he is protecting that place to sacrifice the kids and me.” My gaze dropped to the ground as I tried to connect the pieces. “That’s why he is so desperate to corner me and capture the kids. He is not really after the Mirror. He wants me and Devon, and Diana.”
Rey didn’t answer, but he nodded with a grave look on his face.
“What is he trying to do, though? I asked the Queen’s guard. “What is Bennette really trying to do?”
Rey’s frown deepened as he crossed his arms on his chest and then shook his head slightly as if he was trying to figure the situation out as well. “We don’t know what he is really after or what his plan really is, Lady Samantha. But we will work to prevent all his evil plans from happening. I will help you as hard as I can.”
“We have to prevent it from happening, Rey. We have to stop Bennette.” I said to him desperately. “I can’t let the children live in fear like this! We have to find him and kill him!”
“I understand. There is another way, though. To weaken his forces.” Rey scratched his chin once again as he answered. I noticed he does that when he thinks deeply.
“What should we do?” I asked, and then noticed that Dominic was heading towards us, making me more desperate for his answer because I knew that Dominic was ready to argue again over how I just behaved after I pushed him away in front of Devon, and I was not in the mood for any confrontation other than getting rid of Bennette.
“We have to find a way to get rid of the twins’ powers. And I mean their abilities as descendants of the Primordial Clan. The only way I know is to use their power to seal the Shadow Wolf King and destroy all the Shadow Werewolves that are under Bennette’s command. In that way, we can weaken his force, and we can easily get rid of them if the other pack agrees to fight with us.”
Those slow steps suddenly turned into a heavy march as Dominic approached Rey and me with an angry look on his face. His teeth were bared. He must have heard what we were talking about, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that upset him.
“There’s no way I would let the twins risk themselves and lose the thing that makes them think they are important,” he snarled as he glared at Rey. He didn’t look at me, though, but I felt he was also upset about what I did to him. “If there’s a way I can seal the Shadow Wolf King myself, then I’ll do it instead!”
I understood the fear and the anger in Dominic. I felt so desperate. Frustrated. Scared. Was there any other way to turn this tide around without sacrificing Devon and Diana’s powers? After this night, they both proved to me and to everyone how important they were against the curse of the shadow werewolves. Even Olivia couldn’t stand against them.
Dominic was right. Devon and Diana were the only chance we had to survive this battle without dying from the curse.
I never thought it could be this difficult.
Even Rey could understand the risk and couldn’t argue with my husband. He knew how important the twins’ powers were after they had finally manifested the purification spell. And losing them meant that one of us might die one day of the curse if we weren’t cautious about it.
“You can’t do it, Dominic,” I said to my husband as he kept on insisting on using himself instead to seal the Shadow Wolf King. “You can’t do it alone. You could die!”
From my back, I felt a familiar presence approaching us as well and saw Killian looking terribly worn out. He gave me an exhausted grin; his clothes were torn, and dirt was smudged on his face.
“Killian!” I quickly embraced him, making Dominic’s face darken. “What happened to you?! Did you get him!? What happened?”
“No. The Black Claws were swift, and there were too many to deal with,” Killian answered, his voice full of frustration as he massaged the space between his eyes.
The dimness in Dominic’s eyes was replaced with suspicion as he squinted his eyes at Killian. “He got away, or you helped him get away?”
There was sudden tension between the two that made the hair on my nape stand. Even Rey got uncomfortable when Dominic and Killian glared at each other, putting in all the effort not to rip each other’s necks.
“Stop it!” I hissed at them. “Both of you, stop!”
Killian gave Dominic one last menacing look before he looked down on me, trying to ease the tension that Dominic created. His voice was sharp, but I felt his effort not to sound harsh as he suggested. “I think there can be a way to prevent sacrificing the kids’ abilities. Brianne once told me that sacrificial rituals can lessen the impact of using the Moon Heart.”
“Moon Heart?” I frowned, confused. “I’ve never heard that once before. Does such a thing exist?”
“It’s a relic. Just like the Moonlight Mirror,” Rey answered; his face looked bright, like Killian’s suggestion was the best idea we could do or have. “The Moon Heart is the late Queen Luna’s relic and has been hidden in one of the Royal Chambers. The good thing is, you and your husband can open the chamber using your blood. An Alpha mixed with someone who came from the royal bloodline.”
“Then we must go,” Dominic said, looking at me with eagerness in his tone as he faced me. He was so close that he towered over me, and as he pulled me by my chin with his thumb, he asked me to stare into his eyes.
For several seconds, I felt a sudden confusion in my heart. His hazel eyes were full of emotions I couldn’t fathom. They were making me panic. Nervous. I hated this feeling, especially when he looked like he was begging me to do something with him. Those pleading eyes were my kryptonite. The very weakness of my soul, which I couldn’t resist.
“Okay then... Let’s go and find out what we can do about it.” I finally agreed to him, and I saw how his face brightened as a faint smile lifted the corner of his lips, suppressing the happiness he was feeling inside. “We have to do this for the sake of the kids and make sure no one’s going to have to sacrifice just so we can get rid of that old traitor.”
Killian didn’t look convinced about my decision, but he pulled his lips in a sad smile as he sighed and then started walking away from me.
I had no idea what was in his mind, and I never wanted to think he was hurt that I would go to some places without him.
