The X Guide-Chapter 106: To Find Companions (5)
Ayen thought that the two espers were also like himself, inhabiting someone else. And it was likely that they were higher-level espers.
He could not see any traces of Khal or Devion in him. Even when they were on different bodies, Ayen still had enough confidence to discern some familiarities with them.
His eyes glanced at the other esper. Ayen wanted to test him as well.
"What about him?" Ayen pointed with his eyes to the other esper. "Is he asleep?"
With his question, the others also turned to the esper. The A-class esper who was ready for a guiding session frowned slightly but did not urge Ayen.
He was not yet in a critical condition. Also, Ayen was ultimately just here on a request and not part of the association.
The esper turned to his colleague. "Ah, him. He’s awake... I think?"
Ayen looked at him. The esper scratched his chin, also not sure. Since it was the case, he stood up and went to the other esper’s bed under the watchful gaze of everyone.
"Dude!" The esper poked at his colleague. "Someone’s here to guide us," he almost shouted the word ’finally.’
They had been waiting since last night. Unfortunately, something happened to the guide, and they were forced to wait and make do with some small guiding sessions, which were not enough to satisfy their needs.
The esper did not stir as though he were really asleep. This time, the esper furrowed his brows. He was awake just a few minutes ago.
Although, something was off about him.
"What’s with you? You’re just ignoring me, right?" After a few urgings, the esper did not respond. The esper finally snapped and cursed. "This bastard..."
He almost raised his hand to hit the esper’s back, but a sudden bad premonition welled inside him, and he paused. The esper took a step back, his heart beating faster and faster.
"Is something the matter?" Diana went to him and asked. The esper’s face suddenly became pale for some reason.
Ayen, who was watching this, felt his heart skip a beat. He sensed something amiss with that esper.
"Ah, no." The esper shook his head and returned to his bed. Ayen glanced at his hands and noticed that he was trembling.
Ayen walked towards the esper who was sleeping. Before he did so, he would need to pass by Julius, who stood in his way.
"What are you doing?" His question carried a hint of interrogation.
Ayen briefly gave a look and ignored him, taking a few steps to bypass him. Julius gritted his teeth and was about to grab Ayen’s wrist, but Ayen skillfully dodged.
Ayen gave him a side glance without a hint of emotion, yet Julius had to step back. He was startled himself. Why did he do that? Was he scared?
Fortunately for him, Ayen did not care about him and only wanted to confirm something. He was soon standing at the side of the bed, looking down at the seemingly sleeping esper.
The others watched him with different expressions. The A-class esper clenched his teeth, and in the end, he still warned Ayen. Although espers always had a soft spot for guides that could guide them, he was not sure if the esper was in his right state of mind.
"Be careful. He’s become a bit... prickly." He was not sure if that was the right term to call the attitude of this colleague at this moment.
Unbeknownst to him, Ayen’s heart thumped once more, and his eyes gleamed slightly. He still wanted to confirm before celebrating too early.
He stared at the esper’s back, thinking of what to say.
"Can I guide both of you?" Ayen could not think of anything else, so he just blurted it out.
He did not know if that was the appropriate one to test if this Esper was Khal or Devion. But at least this topic could more or less catch the attention of anyone.
Guiding both espers at the same rank required more than just skill.
The expressions of the others changed, with some planning to speak their opinions. Ayen could not care less about them; he was only focusing on the esper.
"I really want to do it," Ayen added. His words carried nothing of the anticipation welling up inside him as he waited for the esper to respond.
A minute or two had passed before the esper showed a reaction. He slowly moved until he was lying on his back. His eyes were focused and automatically met Ayen’s.
There were apprehensions in those eyes, but even more so, Ayen could see the same anticipation.
The two stared at each other. It was to the point that the others in the room were bewildered, and yet no one interrupted them.
Ayen knew that once he encountered Khal and Devion, he would be able to tell who they were. And it seemed Ayen became attached more than he thought.
He did not move, only stared at the esper. They did not have resemblance at all, but the familiar gaze... Ayen could not mistake it for anyone at this point.
The esper moved first, and Ayen had already anticipated it. To everyone’s shock, Ayen was suddenly embraced by the esper.
The esper whispered in Ayen’s ears.
"Ayen."
Ayen nodded, and he reciprocated the embrace and called his name.
"It’s me, Devion."
He found one of his espers.
None of them could hear their words. It should be impossible, as everyone had heightened senses. However, a mysterious force seemed to have censored their words, and so aside from the opening of their mouths, nothing was heard in the end.
They became lost in the hug, so the other A-class esper had to speak up.
"Wait. Do you two know each other?" He looked in shock. Why were these two like they were having a reunion? "That’s not right. Friz, you said you don’t know the A-class Guide."
Not just him, everyone was puzzled. Julius was already clenching his fist, glaring at Ayen.
After a while, Ayen and Devion withdrew. However, they did not immediately turn to others and only looked at each other.
Devion was about to say something, but he realized that it was not the appropriate situation. He finally looked at the others. His eyes swept over the people inside, giving Julius a few seconds more attention before landing on the other A-class esper.
He narrowed his eyes and held Ayen’s waist, pulling him closer.
"You. Find another guide."
