Chapter 168: Red Zone 67 (8)

The place did not have a known legendary story. It was not as famous, so Ayen not having an impression of this red zone was not surprising.

For Devion and Khal, it was also not something that needed to be fussed over. It was not a big deal. Well, for them.

The city around the Red Zone 67 sprouted literally out of nowhere. However, it was not just a simple city, but a city composed of small settlements.

Devion and Khal’s stay in this forbidden zone was not a secret; most people still know. Especially those who looked up to them the most, and the majority of them were under the illusion that being near the two SS-class espers was safer than being in the zones.

Khal could not remember when this city became like this; he was not paying attention at all. As for the government’s inaction, that was not surprising.

The higher-ups were terrified of them and would not deliberately create trouble for them over this piece of land. As this forbidden zone and the land in its periphery were considered their ’territory,’ the government avoided provoking them and turned a blind eye.

They must have been under the impression that the two espers were protecting this place when, in reality, they were not even involved in the slightest. The government must also have forgotten about this place, as the dispatch of espers and guides halted in the past couple of years.

The association and institution were there in name only; Ayen and the other two guides were the first transfer here in a long while.

As for the staff? They were, of course, Khal’s subordinates who quietly took over Red Zone 67. So, when Ayen saw the place being lifeless and no people lingering around, it was because there weren’t any at all.

Aside from the newcomers, there might only be five ’normal’ staff inside. The rest were espers not affiliated with the government. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

"It’s not as mysterious." Khal smiled. "Devion’s just teasing you." He himself was fond of seeing Ayen’s curiosity be drawn to something like this, as it was not a common sight yet.

There were a few things that Ayen was interested in, and that was the reason Devion kept on teasing him. This was to keep him from being bored too quickly. Knowing Ayen, that was a possibility.

Contrary to him, Ayen found this city a big deal. If it were just a city that sprouted out of nowhere, then Ayen would not be as intrigued as he was now.

The reason he wanted to know what was going on was that the faces of the citizens were different here. The impression they gave off had a certain sense of disparity compared to the citizens he had met outside.

It was not to the point of being carefree. In fact, it was the opposite. They were busier and yet filled with life. They seemed to be truly living in the moment and not just letting the time pass with uncertainty for the next day.

That was the first thing he noticed. Ayen could not connect with that, and so he felt it was out of place.

"About that port, are you also involved with it?"

This kind of atmosphere was something he had witnessed the last time in that Port City.

Khal’s lips curled naturally at this question. Ayen looked up as Khal leaned slightly and their eyes met.

"That’s a different one." Khal leaned slowly and kissed Ayen’s lips. There was no reason; he just wanted to do it. After two seconds, their lips parted. "It’s mine. The city’s mine."

When it comes to properties, not even the top elite clan could compare with him. Khal was quite a tycoon in that regard.

As the two were having such a casual and hushed conversation in a quite intimate position, Devion had returned from the kitchen. His footsteps were always light; not even Khal could sense his arrival if he did not make a noise.

He paused right at the door of the bedroom. In his hands was the big plate of sushi he quickly prepared. Devion always had this habit of using the kitchen first when he was in a new place.

One was because he was itching and distracted from using them, and the other was that he was also hungry. They had not eaten lunch yet.

Devion did not know exactly why he stopped and did not continue going inside. It was not him to hesitate over things that did not really matter.

He watched the two. Maybe because of this? He suddenly felt it was a shame to ruin that moment. They seemed so peaceful, and it was such a picture-perfect moment.

If he went inside, the perfect moment might be...

"You are self-aware."

It was not known if the shadow had reappeared now or if it had never really left. It stood just beside Devion, at the same height and with the same figure. Despite not having a clear appearance, one would mistake it for Devion’s real shadow.

"You are becoming a nuisance."

Of course, it was not true. Such nonsense could not easily discourage Devion. If he were in a bad condition, maybe he might, but Devion is in a very good condition these days.

His body was, but that did not mean his mental state was the same. Still, it was nothing new, and Devion could easily suppress the shadow if he wanted to.

Why had he not done so? Was he thinking of listening to the shadow’s words because it was affecting him? Not really.

Devion just did not want to bother with it. It would vanish once it could not get its desired reaction from him, like a defeated rat.

Then, why had Devion yet to make a noise or approach the two?

Devion had already said it.

Instead of his heart becoming unsettled because of ’feeling left out,’ it was more that he was so mesmerized seeing them together.

Khal and Ayen...

They were different.

But at the same time, so much the same in his eyes. Devion realized it thoroughly. How... down bad he was.
