The X Guide-Chapter 89: To Travel The Chaotic Lands (1)
The answer to this question did not need to be said, as long as the two were aware of it. Khal excused himself, and that was the cue for the two to leave.
Khal’s attitude was quite cold despite the warm outward appearance. The last thing he wanted at this moment was to be involved in such a conflict.
All his focus was on the upcoming travel trip they planned. The rest could wait.
The two did not insist either. Despite their status being one of the top in the current humanity, in front of Khal and Devion, they still had to bow their heads.
This was but a small interlude and was quickly thrown to the side. Even Ayen did not ask what the two wanted to talk about. Despite his willingness to get close to his two espers, he was still mostly indifferent to the affairs of the world.
In this regard, Khal and Devion were actually quite pleased.
This opportunity was not only to travel and get closer, but Khal and Devion had been in seclusion for too long; even they were not very familiar with the current situation.
While Khal could read reports from his subordinates, seeing them with his own eyes was still different.
Ayen had already said his goodbyes with his roommates, and while he was at it, he sent a message to Keeran. She was his first friend in a while and had a special place in his heart. Otherwise, why would Ayen bother to escape with her?
The zone she was in was a relatively good city, but since it was quite close to the capital, Ayen was worried that she might be implicated again. Ayen wanted to give her a choice.
To stay in the area or be transferred to Ayen’s new red zone. After all, Keeran had only experienced a traumatic incident not long ago, and Ayen did not want to decide for her.
Whatever her decision was, Ayen could only wait and support it. Once he tied these loose ends, Ayen could finally focus on the trip.
He was both excited and nervous. Ayen felt like this trip could be the one that drives them closer or emphasizes the lingering faults of their relationship.
Ayen tightened the strap of his bag and looked ahead. He took a deep breath and cleared his mind. Focus on what is the present, Ayen inwardly berated himself.
"Can you still continue?" Devion whispered; they had already left the stronghold, and soon the area within the red zone 21.
Devion was with him while Khal was walking slightly ahead. So far, they had yet to encounter any monster or other people.
"It’s fine. I can still walk on my own." Ayen was not just being stubborn.
While his stamina could not be compared to the two, he could still walk for an hour or two. In this journey, they did not have any transportation as the route they took did not support any type of vehicles.
Ayen’s was fully covered; not the slightest chill could seep in. Compared to him, the two only wore a thin coat over their combat suits.
Devion stared at him, and seeing that he was not lying, he could only nod.
"Remember to tell us if you’re already tired."
That was also a compromise after planning the trip. Ayen was a guide and was not used to traveling on foot. Ayen had to promise them not to be stubborn regarding this matter.
Ayen was not someone who let himself suffer. Even if this was not discussed, he would certainly tell him when he could not keep up anymore.
"Of course," Ayen agreed without much fuss. Devion smiled and squeezed his hand as he swayed it while they walked.
Ayen glanced at him and saw that he was enjoying this, so he let him. In fact, he was also at ease. Khal, who was ahead of them, turned around and saw them slowing down.
He narrowed his eyes but was obviously pleased at the sight.
"Come on. We need to find a place to camp for the night." Khal gestured for them to hurry up.
Devion pretended he did not hear them and maintained the pace. Ayen would not be able to drag Devion if he did not want to, so he chose not to bother.
Khal could only shake his head and turn forward again, intending to find the place himself.
The sky was already dark when they decided to stop. Khal had already found a good spot. Unlike the usual, he specifically chose a place with relatively good space.
Since Ayen was with them, they could not just choose whatever spot they set their eyes on. It had to still be comfortable.
Devion and Ayen finally kept up with Khal and watched him set up a wide tent. After a few seconds, the two also began to help with other things.
Ayen was assigned to pick up some small twigs or logs, which were everywhere. Devion had also prepared the ingredients for their dinner. Khal mostly busied himself with the tent and putting other things inside.
For a time, the three became busy, and no one talked. There was also something comfortable and serene about the silence, and it was not awkward at all.
At some point, Ayen helped Devion with the dinner, and Khal put some defensive measures around the camp. Although the low-level monsters were afraid to attack them because of their presence alone, Khal never neglected this part of security.
"Babe, let’s eat," Devion called to Khal.
Khal was someone who often called Devion with endearments, and Devion mostly called him that jokingly sometimes. There was a time, like this one, when it was like a subconscious action and a habit.
If no one pointed it out, Devion himself would not realize it. Ayen would not comment on it, and Khal surely also did not think something was wrong either.
"Wait, I’ll finish soon," Khal shouted.
Devion clicked his tongue but did not respond. He then turned to Ayen, who was looking in Khal’s direction, and also turned to him.
Their eyes met, and Devion automatically smiled. He could not help but reach out and pinch Ayen’s smooth chin.
