Chapter 49: The Wolf Sky Mercenaries on the move (Part-2)

Chang Bo quickly seized the chance to flatter him.

"Leader Song, rest assured. We’ll catch Li Wei before Leader Shen does. After all, we’re the ones doing the hard work out here. Leader Shen is probably enjoying himself in Yuhong Pavilion right now, surrounded by beauties. We can’t let him steal all the credit."

The words were dangerous.

Openly slandering another Upper Exalt was courting death.

Song Fengxi shot Chang Bo a sharp glance.

"Watch your mouth," he said quietly. "There are ears everywhere. Some things can be said in private, not out loud."

"Yes! Of course! This subordinate understands!" Chang Bo replied immediately, though his expression showed little real fear.

Song Fengxi folded his hands behind his back and spoke in a tone heavy with righteousness.

"This operation concerns the dignity of the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps. Whoever captures Li Wei doesn’t matter. What matters is uncovering who stands behind him. If we can’t even deal with a small city family, what face will we have left?"

"We must act decisively. This is how we serve the mercenary corps."

"Well said, Leader Song," Chang Bo agreed obediently.

He knew full well that Song Fengxi was putting on a show.

Within the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps, everyone knew that Song Fengxi and Shen Yu despised each other. Cooperation between them was nothing more than surface politeness.

Still, Chang Bo didn’t expose it.

What puzzled him was something else entirely.

He had indeed described Ryan as powerful when reporting, but not to the extent that two Upper Exalts and over a dozen Exalts needed to be mobilized.

This force could wipe out half of Fengyue City.

Even if Ryan was strong, a handful of Exalts would have been more than enough. Sending golden-robed leaders felt excessive.

Yet Chang Bo dared not question it.

After Song Fengxi and Shen Yu arrived, Chang Bo told them everything he knew in detail. Piece by piece, Ryan’s background was uncovered.

Li Clan.

Son of the Patriarch.

Sixteen years old.

Strength at possibly Upper Elite.

That alone shocked everyone.

But the most unbelievable detail came last.

A month ago, Ryan had been a complete waste.

Unable to cultivate.

Useless.

And yet in just one month, he had risen to the Upper Elite realm?

Impossible.

Absolutely impossible.

And yet... the evidence pointed that way.

Whether it was true or not didn’t matter.

Once Ryan was captured and tortured, all secrets would be laid bare.

With his identity confirmed, the two golden-robed leaders immediately took action. They sent people to monitor the Li Clan, probe every corner, and even prepared to turn the Li household upside down if necessary.

All that remained now was one thing.

Waiting.

Waiting for Ryan to return.

However, the Li Clan enjoyed the protection within Fengyue City.

As long as they remained inside the city, no force was allowed to act against them openly. Even the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps, even with two golden-robed Upper Exalts leading the charge, would not dare to violate the rules set by the Western Mansion.

Those rules were ironclad.

Whoever crossed them would be crushed without mercy.

Because of this, the two golden-robed leaders did not dare to make a direct move against the Li Clan. Instead, they devised a more insidious plan.

First, eliminate Ryan.

Then, once the backbone was gone, use covert means to slowly dismantle the Li Clan from the shadows.

After all, the Li Clan was nothing more than a small clan. Outside the gaze of the Western Mansion, erasing them would be effortless for the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps.

But fate mocked them. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Ryan had gone out to train and would not return for half a month.

With their elites idle and patience wearing thin, the two golden-robed leaders finally decided to split their forces.

One group would lie in wait near the Li Clan, ready to strike the moment Ryan appeared.

The other group would intercept the main road leading into the city.

As long as Ryan showed himself, he would be seized instantly and dragged back to the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps.

Chang Bo, naturally, followed Song Fengxi’s group.

That was how he ended up standing on the Yangsha Ancient Road.

*

Dust billowed in the distance.

A beast-drawn carriage approached at high speed.

Three one-horned beasts pulled the vehicle. These creatures were famous for their endurance, capable of traveling thousands of miles a day, their speed rivaling that of an Exalt.

Anyone who could afford such a carriage was either rich or powerful. Ordinary people could only look on with envy.

But today, status meant nothing.

Standing here was the elite of the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps. Every single one of them possessed at least Exalt strength.

Dragon or tiger, noble or commoner, all had to stop.

"Stop!"

A masked silver-robed warrior raised his hand and shouted.

The old man driving the carriage frowned but pulled on the reins, bringing the beasts to a halt. Though displeased, he did not dare force his way through.

He glanced back toward the carriage and spoke respectfully.

"Uncle Shi, what’s going on?"

A deep, authoritative voice came from inside the carriage, carrying the weight of someone long accustomed to command.

"It’s nothing," Uncle Shi replied. "Just a group of roadblockers. I’ll handle it at once."

"Hurry," the voice said impatiently. "The qualification test for Fengyue City is about to begin. I can’t afford delays."

"Yes!"

Uncle Shi acknowledged, then leapt down from the carriage. His gaze hardened as he stared at the masked men.

"Who are you?" he demanded coldly. "Daring to block the road in broad daylight. Do you know who sits in this carriage? I’d say you’re courting death!"

The masked warrior replied indifferently, "I don’t care who you are. This road is sealed. Step aside, let us inspect you, and you can leave once we confirm you’re not the person we’re looking for."

"Impudent!"

Uncle Shi exploded with anger.

In his eyes, the man before him was nothing more than a low-ranking lackey. And yet he dared to speak so arrogantly?
