Chapter 77: The Interruption of Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps (Part-8)

In an instant, the short blade split into nine overlapping afterimages. The sword shadows intertwined chaotically, weaving together like dancing butterflies. The pattern was dazzling and disorienting, making it impossible to tell which blade was real and which were feints.

Any attempt by Xiao Hei to force its way through would result in being struck by multiple slashes.

Once again, Shen Yu sealed Xiao Hei’s attack route.

He would not allow his remaining men to be slaughtered so easily.

In the distance, Wang Zongyao watched the exchange with narrowed eyes. Though Shen Yu was his enemy, he could not help but admire the man’s skill.

"Worthy of a three-star Upper Exalt," Wang Zongyao muttered.

He, too, could barely track Xiao Hei’s movements.

Yet if he were in Shen Yu’s position, he knew he could not protect his subordinates so effectively. Compared to Shen Yu’s seamless defense using whip and blade together, he felt the gap in their combat experience keenly.

Ryan was equally surprised.

He had not expected Shen Yu to possess such a wealth of methods. Without relying on speed-enhancing techniques, special pills, or movement equipment, Shen Yu was still able to keep pace with Xiao Hei’s rhythm and repeatedly block its attacks.

If Xiao Hei were facing Shen Yu alone, without needing to worry about protecting Ryan or picking off weaker enemies, the outcome would be far less certain.

This realization made Ryan frown slightly.

Just what kind of existence was the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps to produce experts of this caliber?

Chang Bo, Zhang Yuxi, the silver-robed warriors at the warrior level, and even the two Upper Exalts, Song Fengxi and Shen Yu. None of these people were figures an ordinary force could casually produce.

Put them together, and they would be more than enough to sweep through all the forces of an entire city.

Was the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps really just a mercenary group?

With such strength, even founding a sect would not be a problem.

What was more unsettling was that these people did not even seem to be the true core. They felt more like executioners or enforcers. If that was the case, then what kind of existence was hidden at the top of the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps?

Not only did they possess an absurd number of experts, but their behavior was also completely unlike that of a normal mercenary organization.

Ordinary mercenary corps focused on taking missions, escorting goods, exploring ruins, but slowly accumulating strength and reputation.

But the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps?

From the very first encounter, Chang Bo had been laying traps, framing other mercenary groups, and seizing benefits through underhanded means. That was not something a righteous mercenary corps should be doing.

Yet according to everything Ryan had investigated, the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps had an excellent reputation. They were known as an organization that punished evil and upheld order, respected by many.

The contrast was too stark.

A group with many experts, a spotless reputation, yet secretly committing ruthless and dirty acts, harboring grudges, and seeking revenge at all costs. The more Ryan connected the dots, the more mysterious the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps became.

"What exactly are they?" Ryan thought, narrowing his eyes.

But regardless of what kind of force they truly were, the fact that they dared to repeatedly come after him meant one thing. This matter could not be allowed to rest.

Ryan made a decision in his heart. After finishing the family mission at Western Mansion, he would personally visit the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps’ headquarters and see for himself what kind of monster lurked behind that name.

At that very moment, a familiar mechanical voice echoed in his mind.

"Ding. Main quest received. Investigate the Wolf Sky Mercenary Corps and eradicate its dark forces."

Ryan’s lips curved into a smile.

He had not expected that a mere decision would trigger a main quest. This was an unexpected delight. Main quests always meant generous rewards, and this one sounded particularly satisfying.

Meanwhile, the battle continued.

Shen Yu’s short blade once again blocked Xiao Hei’s attack path and slashed fiercely toward it. If Xiao Hei failed to react immediately, it would be struck head-on in the next instant.

"Roar!"

Xiao Hei let out a sharp cry and twisted its body midair, relying once again on its speed and flexibility to evade Shen Yu’s blade. Just like before, it planned to land, rebound, change direction, and resume its assault.

This pattern had proven almost flawless. Time and again, Xiao Hei had used its overwhelming speed and reaction to force its way through Shen Yu’s defenses.

After all, even if Shen Yu could see Xiao Hei’s movements, he could not truly keep up with its speed.

Blocking with the right hand once, with the left hand once, switching weapons and techniques. How long could that last?

But this time, something changed.

Just as Xiao Hei shifted position and leapt again, Shen Yu suddenly barked an order.

"Everyone, attack the right side!"

At his command, the remaining black-clad warriors struck in unison. Blades flashed, fists flew, all directed toward the right.

And that was precisely where Xiao Hei appeared.

Mid-leap.

With no room to interrupt its movement.

Shen Yu’s earlier defenses had not merely been blocks. Step by step, he had forced Xiao Hei into a predetermined path. First driving it sideways, then steering it toward the right, and now, right into a coordinated kill zone.

This was the terror of battlefield experience.

Xiao Hei was a beast, swift and deadly, but it was still no match for human cunning when it came to layered tactics.

All attacks converged on it at once.

Yet in that instant...

Puff. Puff. Puff.

Three dull, sickening sounds rang out.

Before any blow could land on Xiao Hei, three of the black-clad warriors suddenly stiffened. Their bodies split cleanly in two at the waist, blood spraying as they collapsed.

Three more dead.

Only four Exalt-rank warriors remained.

The sudden deaths stunned them. Their attacks halted mid-motion as they stared in horror at their bisected comrades, unable to comprehend what had just happened.

Who had attacked?

From where?

That brief hesitation was fatal.

Xiao Hei seized the opening. Its body surged forward, claws flashing as it tore through the remaining four warriors.

Boom.

Its figure danced like a ghost, appearing and vanishing among them. When it finally pulled away and returned to Ryan’s side, the four remaining men stood frozen for a heartbeat.

Then their bodies exploded into fragments, blood and flesh scattering across the ring, staining the ground crimson.

In the blink of an eye, every Exalt-rank black-clad warrior lay dead.

Only Shen Yu remained. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"What... what the hell just happened?" Shen Yu’s eyes widened, disbelief etched across his face.

Everything had been going according to plan. Xiao Hei had been forced into a trap. Ryan was almost within reach.

So why had his men suddenly been cut in half?

Shen Yu stared at the corpses and noticed the clean, razor-sharp cuts at their waists. They looked as if they had been sliced by an invisible blade.

But aside from Ryan and that beast, there was no one else on the ring.

A chill ran down Shen Yu’s spine.

Slowly, he turned his gaze toward Ryan.

Ryan was smiling at him.

Shen Yu’s heart skipped a beat. He raised a trembling finger and pointed at Ryan.

"You... was it you?"
