This Lich Requests More Remuneration-Chapter 125 - 116 The Contract with Shael_2
Chapter 125: Chapter 116: The Contract with Shael_2
Chapter 125 -116: The Contract with Shael_2
If that’s the case, the Magic Goddess could be considered the daughter of these twin sisters, and therefore, she was born powerful. After gaining control over the concept of magic, her power almost surpassed that of all other deities.
What Shael yearned for was the power of the Magic Goddess. As long as she could seize that power, revenge would be a piece of cake for her. In short, apart from the Magic Goddess, only Shael had some understanding of the Magic Web.
The dusty book in Amberser’s hands was a research record about the worship of the Dark Goddess.
The gods were mighty and mysterious, yet researching the gods had always been the most important discipline among mortals. This book on the worship of the Dark Goddess contained a record of a special sacrificial ritual, through which one could communicate with the Dark Goddess, allowing her to elucidate mysteries for her devotees.
The only thing is, this offering was a little bit special.
Every deity had their own unique sacrificial ritual. Rowetta required that her followers self-harm or torment others, with blood and pain as the best offerings. For the Lord of the Dawn, the best offerings were the vanquished forces of evil, while the archdukes of Hell favored souls, preferably souls tormented to madness.
As for Shael, the offering she required was very special—all things related to the light.
Shael harbored a deep-seated hatred for her sister, Serene, and so she was desperate to destroy everything related to Serene. The Moon Goddess and the Lord of the Dawn were steadfast allies, forming a coalition centered on light with many other deities.
That’s why Shael also bore a grudge against the Lord of the Dawn.
The best offering would naturally be to lead a devotee of the light to fall from grace, and if Amberser could bring Shael a fallen devotee of the light, she would surely not be stingy with her rewards.
If those Paladins were still around, Amberser really wanted to try and make these devotees of the Lord of the Dawn fall from grace, transforming Paladins into Oathbreakers. Perhaps Shael, in a very good mood, would directly reveal the secrets of the Magic Web to him, but now he had to choose a different offering.

Amberser dug out the battered helmet from the mouth of the Mercury Avatar. It was a replica of a Divine Artifact from the Laine Empire. Despite it being a replica, the divine power of light within was genuine. The Mercury Avatar had consumed it for many days and only managed to corrode it partially. Now it was time to make use of the waste.
Amberser began to set up the ritual for honoring Shael within the castle.
Depicting the magic ritual was not difficult, and the related process details were not complicated. In fact, they were simple enough to give Amberser the impression it was less than grand. Perhaps this was because Shael knew her worship was in decline; if the ritual had been too stringent, there would have been even fewer mortals worshipping her.
Most mortals were selective when choosing their faith.
Following what was written in the book, Amberser made the preparations for the ritual and then placed the helmet, battered yet still retaining its divine light power, on the altar.
“Under the endless, pitch-black night sky, we converge here to offer our faith to the Mistress of the Night. You are the weaver of shadows, the sovereign of the night. Under your protection, all things can hide and be reborn…”
Amberser carefully recited the praise for the Dark Goddess. Though he was respectful, it could hardly be considered devout, as Amberser was not a devotee of any deity. He merely maintained a basic respect for these lofty deities rather than worship.
After the prayer was finished, Amberser used his magic to light a dim flame, setting the helmet on the altar ablaze.
The Dark Magic Power collided with the divine light power, hissing as they interacted.
Amberser’s power was far greater than that of the Mercury Avatar, and he quickly corroded much of the divine light power in the helmet. If before, this Divine Artifact could have been repaired and reused, now it was thoroughly desecrated and beyond salvation.
To profane the light, to honor the night.
Once the ritual was complete, a thick black smoke emanated from the altar and then congealed into a shadow nearly ten meters tall.
This shadow was draped in a cloak of black feathers that continuously fell, each feather gracefully vanishing before it could touch the ground. The ephemeral shade concealed her visage, revealing only the graceful figure beneath the cloak.
Shael opened her mouth, her voice melodic yet tinged with desolation.
“Mortal, I am pleased with your offering. But you are not my follower. Speak, what is it you wish to exchange?”
Amberser did his best to restrain his soul force, not daring to listen carefully to Shael’s voice.
The Goddess had descended in the form of a singer of the night, her voice like the endless darkness, bringing with it a deadly allure. If one wasn’t careful, it would be all too easy to become enchanted by her voice, to be utterly devoured by the power of the night and thus become one of her zealous devotees.
“Respected Goddess of Night, I offer this tainted light divine power as a sacrifice, wishing to exchange it for knowledge about the Magic Web,” he said.
“Oh, bold mortal, do you wish to recreate the destruction of the past?” Shael inquired.
Amberser didn’t answer the question, but instead said to Shael, “If the Magic Web’s destruction is destined, then no matter what I choose, it will happen. Respected Goddess, please tell me whether you accept this trade.”
Shael replied, “The secrets of the Magic Web are of great importance, as you should be well aware. A mere imitation Divine Artifact is far from enough.”
“Then may I ask, Goddess, what kind of price is needed to exchange for this knowledge?”
“How about becoming my Chosen of God?” Shael proposed.
Amberser remained silent; what was wrong with these Goddesses, continuously wanting him to become their Chosen of God one after another?
Even though Shael had fallen from grace, surely she wouldn’t just pull anyone who happened to be legendary into her camp, would she?
Even though he was a Lich and inherently of an evil alignment, neither pain nor darkness was a great fit for Amberser. The Deities could not possibly fail to see the path that Amberser had chosen, their eagerness to recruit made him feel an unsettling premonition.
“What, you don’t wish to accept the favor of the night?” Shael pressed.
“Sorry, I am a non-believer,” he responded firmly.
Amberser’s refusal was resolute; even if Shael didn’t provide him with the knowledge of the Magic Web, he would not relent.
Faith was not a matter to be taken lightly; once one put their faith in a Deity, it was like handing over the right to judge oneself to that Deity. Most people were willing to exchange decades of life for the protection of a Deity, but as a Lich, Amberser saw no need to trade his eternal life for such a meager boon.
Perhaps sensing Amberser’s decisiveness, Shael did not persist and offered another condition instead.
“If you are unwilling to become my Chosen of God, then having another legendary individual become my follower will suffice. Or, if you can cause three Paladins to break their vows and fall, that would also fulfill the condition,” she said.
Amberser sighed and said, “Respected Goddess of Night, I need the knowledge of the Magic Web for an urgent matter; even if I agreed to your conditions, there might not be enough time.”
“That’s alright, I can give you what you want first, as long as you fulfill the contract within ten years.”
Amberser hadn’t expected Shael to concede yet again; feeling something was amiss and wanting to think it over, Shael then said, “If you wish to sense your own future, I advise you to save your energy. You are not yet qualified to see clearly into a future that involves a Deity.”
This statement caused Amberser to fall silent once again.
Indeed, Amberser couldn’t even see Rowetta’s future; the last time was purely a bluff meant to intimidate the Goddess of Pain. Though Shael had fallen from grace, she was far superior in rank to Rowetta, and naturally, Amberser was also unable to see a future that pertained to her.
But Shael’s insistence implied that she believed the contract to be in her favor.
So, should he take the gamble?
Amberser hesitated for a moment, then firmly said, “Respected Goddess, I accept your terms.”
