Chapter 221: Chapter 221: Eyewitness

“He’s right, you should tell us what you can do if you really have a way,” a survivor chimed in at this moment.

Chen Ke remained silent; his original intent had been to appease Sam, but, unexpectedly, he found himself becoming the target of everyone’s accusations.

In the midst of despair, people tend to blame each other to vent their negative emotions, rather than working together to find a solution.

Although in this world, ordinary people indeed have no way out.

“He just… saved all of you.” While some people began to doubt Chen Ke, others chose silence. Diana was the only person speaking up for Chen Ke at this moment, as she sat on the ground trying to stand up.

“Why could he save us… I’ve started to have my doubts. How does a regular person know how to deal with those monsters? Why could he survive?” someone questioned.

“Ying Baiyi kept saying there was a way back, but what happened? He was the first to abandon us! Is there any fundamental difference between Chen Ke and Ying Baiyi?” Everyone started discussing at once.

“We didn’t save you… everyone knows it deep down… it’s just that no one wants to accept reality,” the person who had been reciting the Bible spoke up.

“Our Heavenly Father has abandoned us… The world will fall into chaos… Our lives come to an end here…” the person said flatly as if they had seen through everything.

“I don’t know if this world has fallen into chaos, but I know there’s no daddy of yours up in the sky; let’s all get a grip on our emotions…” Chen Ke said.

“Just keep arguing, you’ve gone mad too, you can’t bear this outcome, so you play superhero pretend. Look around, Mr. Chen, how can you, an ordinary man, take us back home? Create a Teleportation Gate right here?” the man scoffed.

“Oh, you seem to be in good spirits now. Have you accepted your fate?” Chen Ke retorted.

“That’s right, maybe this is our destiny, but at least, the Heavenly Father will not treat us unfairly,” the man said with a smirk.

“What do you mean?” Chen Ke asked.

“At least, before we die in this dim world, there are three women to enjoy thoroughly…” the man’s eyes swept over the two female survivors and Diana.

A tingle ran up the back of Chen Ke’s neck; he hadn’t expected that people, once utterly resigned, would reveal such vile intentions.

“Don’t even think about it,” said one of the survivors who had come with Ying Baiyi, as he raised a gun, aiming at the Bible man.

“That’s not very wise, friend. Why not enjoy what fate offers us?” the Bible man said with a smirk.

“My daughter… she’s turned to ash. She was about the same age as them, and I swore to God I would protect her,” said the gunman, stepping forward.

“Human will is meaningless, Mr.,” the Bible man said with a laugh, turning his gaze towards Diana and licking his lips.

“I’ll give you 5 seconds to change your mind,” Chen Ke said coldly.

“You keep protecting her, Mr. Chen, is it because she lets you carry her on your back? Look… I was alone with her in the same room; she was half-naked lying on the ground, unable to move, covered in blood and sweat beads, so captivating…” the Bible man said with a smile.

“You pervert…” Diana said angrily.

Sam appeared very confused at this moment, his emotions drifting erratically as if he were unhinged. He glanced at Chen Ke and then at Ying Baiyi in the distance, lost in confusion.

Ying Baiyi, watching the farce unfold, seemed very calm. He had seen the suspicion and strife among survivors before, as well as the men and women who fell into madness and gave up everything to descend into degeneracy.

“Mr. Chen, why don’t we share that woman behind you?” the Bible man slowly moved towards Diana.

Chen Ke sighed; he did not want to resort to killing, but this man left him no choice. A murderous aura rose from behind him; with the amount of murderous intent Chen Ke had stored up, if he gave it all to an ordinary person at once, he could literally scare them to death.

Just as he was about to kill without lifting a finger, he heard a gunshot beside his ear.

“Bang!”

Chen Ke watched as a rifle bullet entered the Bible man’s left temple and then blew off his skullcap, exiting through the right temple. White and red splashed together, landing on the collar and face of the girl with black-framed glasses standing next to him.

The Bible man’s body tilted and fell to the ground with a thud, bleeding profusely.

“Damn it!” Ying Baiyi exclaimed softly from a distance.

Chen Ke looked to the right; the shooter was Sam. Sam was breathing heavily at this moment, and his expression returned to normal, becoming once again the person Chen Ke was familiar with.

“Ahhhhhhh!!!” The girl with the black-framed glasses screamed loudly, half of her face still covered in the brain matter of Bible man, with a chunk of red flesh sticking to one of the lenses.

She frenziedly tore at her coat, desperately ripping it off her body.

“Steady her!” someone yelled.

Another girl by her side was already scared stiff, while Sam had dropped his gun and was pinning the black-framed glasses girl to the ground, preventing her from stripping further and using his hands to clean the flesh and blood off her face.

“Sob sob sob sob…” Having lost her glasses, the girl with the black-framed glasses clung to Sam and wept.

“Everything’s going to be okay… Everything’s going to be okay,” Sam comforted.

Ying Baiyi shook his head with a smile as if he had foreseen this scene all along.

“Hey, can you stand up?” Chen Ke walked over to the man who was vomiting, squatted down, and asked.

The man had been motionless since earlier, lying face down with his eyes tightly shut.

Chen Ke gave him a light pat and, feeling a bad premonition when there was no response, he shook the man more forcefully. Still no movement, so he reached out to check for breath.

There was none.

Chen Ke pinched the man’s pulse and leaned over his chest, no heartbeat at all.

He sighed. In utter despair, this man couldn’t hold on, lost all hope, and died.

“Hahaha… I knew it, you’d end up like this,” Ying Baiyi’s laughter came from afar.

“That’s not very wise of you…” Diana sighed.

Sam, holding the black-framed glasses girl and comforting her, felt a mix of shame and guilt for his behavior just now. He looked at Chen Ke, his eyes filled with apology.

Chen Ke spread his hands. If they couldn’t bear it any longer and needed emotional release, he couldn’t blame these people. As ordinary humans, they were under immense pressure. The fact that they had held on until now was impressive.

“It’s hard on everyone… but now is not the time to give up. We’ve already come so far,” Chen Ke said calmly.

The people around fell silent, deeply saddened by the sudden deaths of two companions.

“Keep moving. There’s a small town ahead. We can rest there and find something…” Chen Ke said.

“Wait a second… Chen Ke, listen,” Diana interrupted.

She stood up and placed her right hand on Chen Ke’s left shoulder.

Chen Ke paused, signaling everyone to keep quiet and listen intently.

There was no sound at all.

“Listen to what…? I don’t hear anything,” Chen Ke asked.

“We are by the sea right now…” Diana reminded.

With that reminder from Diana, not just Chen Ke but everyone else understood.

Before, they could faintly hear the sound of waves lapping, but now there was nothing.

Curious, everyone looked out into the pitch-black sea, only to feel the darkness grow even thicker, as if it extended beyond human sight, and the horizon where the sea met the sky was completely invisible.

Chen Ke walked to the edge of the road and peered carefully into the dark distance, but a notification box suddenly popped up at the corner of his eye.
