Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared-Chapter 54 - Searching for Answers
54: Chapter 54: Searching for Answers
54 -54: Searching for Answers
Finally, winter vacation had arrived, meaning everyone could focus more on what they wished to do.
Gu Fan too was prepared, calling for a meeting and sharing what they had learned in previous history classes, hoping for everyone’s approval.
However, this was all so mysterious – eternal and undying powers, the ancient kingdom of Qian Ye, something about a queen – the others began to question if Gu Fan’s direction of investigation had veered off course.
Du Jun teased a bit, “Gu Fan, I know everyone has been under much stress of late, nights of restless sleep and nerves frayed.
What you’re talking about is far from reality.
Do you really believe those absurd accounts in the books?
They have no discernible basis in fact.
Surely you wouldn’t call upon us to accompany you in such a wild goose chase based on a mere legend.”
“I know you all don’t believe in it – I didn’t at first either, but…” Gu Fan didn’t intend to persuade everyone, but he planned to share every bit of conjecture he knew.
Lin Xi firmly stood by Gu Fan’s side, adding, “Everyone, as much as what Gu Fan says might sound ludicrous, don’t forget what we saw when we first entered that secret room.
I think none of us can forget that.”
Hearing this, everyone who had entered the secret room thought back to those eerie sights, shivering involuntarily.
Gu Fan was grateful for Lin Xi’s support and revealed his plan – to return to that ancient town.
Since that was where everything had begun, it was where everything should end.
When everyone learnt of the plan to return to the ancient town for investigations, fear flickered across their faces.
Many of them resisted, feeling that it was not a pleasant place.
Gu Fan merely suggested the plan.
He was well aware of the risks attached to returning to the old town, but he didn’t believe there was room for any other choice. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
He didn’t force anyone.
He could distance himself from it all since he had never entered the secret room.
Everything he was doing now was for Lin Xi.
In the end, only Lu Yi and Jie agreed to accompany Gu Fan.
Somehow, they felt tied to him without even realizing it.
And so, it was decided.
Gu Fan, Lu Yi, Jie and Lin Xi would return to the ancient town while the rest stayed put at home.
Maybe, on their return, Gu Fan and his team might have found a way to solve the current crisis.
So it was settled.
Gu Fan, Lu Yi, Jie, and Lin Xi went home to prepare for the journey; they were due to set off the next day.
Although they felt the danger, they were ready to venture.
Looking at how everyone placed their hopes on Gu Fan didn’t sit well with Du Jun, who envied Gu Fan for leading everyone forward.
Du Jun couldn’t figure out his shortcomings in comparison to Gu Fan.
However, Gu Fan didn’t have the time to bother about Du Jun’s envious looks.
He went home and began packing.
Apart from the necessary clothing, food, and water, he also procured some defense tools, such as a wolf repellent and a baton.
Thanks to the training from Su Hui during this period, he felt quite capable of holding his own in a fight.
All was set, and the team was ready to leave early the next morning.
Gu Fan paced nervously around the living room, mulling over the enormity of the task ahead.
With no better alternatives, the dread of what could happen next only grew.
Thoughts of Zhou Yu and the other missing students added to his growing concern over the danger that lay ahead.
Gu Fan could only steel himself, repeatedly reminding himself that there was no way back.
Unable to sleep in the deep of the night, Gu Fan was fretting, agonizing over whether to cancel the plan.
Sister Su returned at this point.
Seeing Gu Fan in distress, she asked, “What’s the matter?
Has something happened again?”
“Uh… well…” Gu Fan hesitated over how to explain, looking visibly flustered under Sister Su’s inquisitive eye.
His reaction made him appear more like a suspect under scrutiny.
Sister Su commented coolly, “If another classmate has disappeared, you’ll definitely tell me.
But that’s not it.
You’re hesitating, which means you’ve got another foolish plan.
You want my opinion, yet you’re afraid I’ll disapprove, right?”
You’re half right, Sister Su,” Gu Fan replied with an awkward smile.
Then, under her steady gaze, he laid out his plan.
Upon hearing his plan, Sister Su was taken aback and sighed, “Kid, you have quite the imagination.
But no, I can’t allow this.”
At that, Gu Fan looked upset.
“Didn’t you encourage me to bravely face setbacks and adversities, to stand up to evil forces and not to give up?”
A roll of the eyes from Sister Su followed.
“I was only trying to cheer you up after seeing you so downcast.
You don’t have to take it seriously now.”
“Oh, come on.” Gu Fan was almost speechless.
It felt as if Sister Su was just messing with him.
However, seeing the determined look on Gu Fan’s face, Su Hui could only shrug, “I know I can’t stop you, so let’s do this.
I haven’t taken a leave recently anyway.
I’ll accompany you, I’ll come along with you guys.”
“Really, thank you so much Sister Su.” Gu Fan was incredibly happy, nearly jumping for joy.
If Su Hui were a man, Gu Fan really wanted to give her a big hug.
“It’s nothing serious, what I should do anyhow.
What about the rent,” Su Hui said with a wily smile, which made Gu Fan smile, too: “I’ll waive rent for a month.”
‘I’m putting my life on the line to accompany you guys, and you’re only waiving one month’s rent.
You’re too stingy,” Su Hui seemed dissatisfied, prompting Gu Fan to nod in agreement: “OK, two months it will be.”
Still, Su Hui shook her head, “Talking about money sours relationships.
Do I look like the kind of person who only wants to live without paying rent?”
After hearing this, Gu Fan chuckled, “Su Hui, don’t tell me you actually just want to live here.”
“Yes indeed, I just want to live here as long as I can.
You’re so generous in agreeing,” Su Hui was overjoyed.
But Gu Fan was somewhat at a loss – if she continued to live there, sooner or later his parents were going to find out he had roommates without their permission.
Out of the blue, Su Hui asked, “It’s strange.
I’ve been living here for quite a while, but your parents have never shown up.
Are they that busy?”
“Yeah, they’re super busy, with their jobs and taking care of my sister.
Thank heavens I’ve grown up, or they’d have to worry even more.
Sooner or later, though, they’ll be back.” As Gu Fan worried about this very thing, his phone buzzed.
It was a call from his mother.
“Good heavens, it better not be that things we fear invariably happen.” Gu Fan gingerly answered the call, then began chatting and laughing in a very friendly manner with the person on the other end of the line.
Su Hui thought their mother-and-son relationship was pretty good.
After hanging up, Gu Fan looked upset.
“Sister Su, you sure are a doomsayer.
My parents are coming straight here to see me after they get back to the country tomorrow.
We better start packing up.”
“Ah, but I have so much stuff.
I can’t take it all with me.” Su Hui felt alarmed, fearing Gu Fan’s parents might disapprove of her moving in and forcibly evict her.
“Whatever, I’m going to put a new lock on your door right now.
Just make sure my parents don’t see you; it works out that we all have to leave tomorrow anyway.
Maybe it’s destiny.”
“You make a lot of sense.” While Su Hui agreed with his words, she felt a bit weird about it.
Why would they have to hit the road every time Gu Fan’s parents were about to visit?
It was as though their relationship was disapproved of and they were forced to elope.
Gu Fan thought of something else and hurriedly asked, “By the way, Su Hui, maybe you should bring some equipment such as a gun, grenades, or a rocket launcher.”
“I took leave to go with you guys, not to go on a mission.
Don’t get caught up in all these fantasies.
I haven’t got any of those.” After saying this, Suh Hui flexed her fist and added, “No worries, my fist can solve a lot of problems.”
Shaking his head, Gu Fan responded, “But the biggest problem is that you’re dragging along a bunch of us who can’t fight.”
“No worries, worst comes to worst, I make a run for it first, then come back later with a large group to get justice for you.” Suh Hui spoke so casually it made Gu Fan feel more at ease.
This could be a good solution, despite sounding a bit awkward.
Then Gu Fan thought of something else, “Sister Su, what if someone follows us to the ancient town?
According to our last speculation, there seem to be two groups of people.”
“The two groups are just our speculation; they can’t be confirmed, but being followed is certain.
Otherwise, wherever you guys go, the other party will know your actions and kidnap your separated members.” Because of this, Su Hui had to give it serious thought.
She couldn’t understand how the other party was able to constantly shadow their students, knowing exactly where they went.
Did they put a tracker on the students?
But the students regularly bathed and changed clothes, making this impossible.
Did they stake out near the students’ homes?
They could tail the students when they left home, but sometimes they seemed to know their destination and already staked it out, such as waiting at the disembarking point when the students were returning from a trip.
Exactly how did the other party know the students’ every move, and what method did they use to make the students disappear one by one?
And how many unexploited tricks did they have left?
Su Hui really wanted to solve this case, which was why she decided to go with Gu Fan.
After visiting the ancient town, she felt that she might find something new with regards to these mysterious disappearances, that could aid her in solving the case.
