Three Alphas, Fated To One, Played By One, But Mated To One-Chapter 30: Change in Attitude
The place Mike had strangled me was still sore on the inside. That man had nearly severed my head.
"Yes, that’s her. She is very nice and she was the one who asked me to watch over you until you woke up when I came over to check on you yesterday." Anita replied somewhat innocently.
As if it was normal for her to check up on my wellbeing.
I couldn’t help but look at her a few more times.
"Thank you for your care. You don’t have to worry about me. I am fine alone." I didn’t want to get too close to anyone else. Especially not someone who had been following Innocent around for years. What if this was a set up to make me let down my guard then find an opportunity to stab me in the back? I wasn’t ready to take that risk.
Karl’s betrayal was enough. I didn’t think no matter how tough I thought I was, I could handle another one.
"See, she isn’t even grateful you have been sitting in this crumpled up room for two days. She is taking your help for granted. Why do you still want to help her?" One of the girls sitting on the only small sofa in the room shouted at Anita while at the same time looking at me like I was garbage she had no business being near.
"Maddie, I told you I was okay with taking care of Valerie. I didn’t force you to be here. Since you want to lick Innocent’s shoes so much, please leave and go to her. Valerie is recovering and doesn’t need such negativity around her." I was surprised by how Anita talked to her friend.
And the most surprising thing was how she degraded Innocent so openly. Saying that people were licking her shoes was nothing short of spelling out that she was a snob.
Even her two friends were shocked let alone me. But this alarmed me even more. Why would anyone want to go to such lengths to distance themselves from Innocent for me?
Something was definitely wrong, but I said nothing. I wasn’t in a position to say anything anyway.
Maddie got mad and stood up with the attitude of a jilted lover.
"Fine, if you want to coddle this slave, go ahead and do it. What can she help you with apart from getting ostracized by the rest of the pack? If you want the life of an outcast, you can keep associating with her. I want nothing to do with this loser."
She walked out with high heels clacking on the floor like they had beef with it.
The other friend had been watching everything from the side. She never made any derogatory remarks about me, nor did she argue with Anita about her decision to associate with me.
I wondered whether she was a retard, but I had seen her training in the pack training grounds before. She was one of the strong she-wolves who seemed to live in their own worlds.
She never interfered with me. Never made things difficult for me even when others beat me or mocked me in front of her. But she never helped me either.
She was strong, but somewhat invisible in the pack. I was surprised that she would appear in my room and from the looks of it, even after Maddie left angrily, she had no intention of leaving.
I wondered what had gotten into her, but again, I remained quiet.
"I’ll call the doctor to let her know that you are awake." Anita said, walking over to the head of the bed and pressed a button there.
A couple of minutes later, hurried footsteps could be heard heading our way.
Doctor Sam, who I knew her full name was Samantha came in followed by two more doctors. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
For reasons unknown, the two other doctors were just as attentive towards me as Sam was.
I wondered if they had found out about Mike being my mate just as Sam had. Otherwise, why would they be so nice to me?
"How are you feeling Val?" Doctor Sam asked with a smile.
I raised my eyebrows at the way she addressed me. So, we were already on nickname basis now?
"I am doing okay. Thank you very much." I replied softly with a small smile of my own.
It had been years since I smiled in front of others.
The only person who had seen my smile over the last few years was Karl. But now it felt like a joke.
I heard a couple gasps from the side and thought that I had done something wrong. I lost the smile immediately and turned to look at the people who had gasped.
One was Anita and the other was one of the two new doctors who came in with Doctor Sam.
I was puzzled about their reaction when Anita spoke.
"You should smile some more."
I didn’t understand where that suggestion came from but I just nodded.
After Doctor Sam examined me with the other doctors, she heaved a sigh of relief.
"You are doing better than expected. In about a week, you can start trying to sit up straight. But for now, lying down is the best way to give the set bones to heal." She explained and I just kept nodding.
"I will come to see you later." She said before leaving with her entourage.
"If you have anything else to do you can go and do it. Don’t worry about me." I wanted to be alone for a while, so I encouraged Anita and her friend to leave.
But who would have thought that she would pretend to be a fool who didn’t understand.
"It’s okay. Since I volunteered to watch over you, I will do it. What if I leave and you need to use the bathroom? You heard the doctor, you should stay lying down and not strain your broken bones. What will you do if I leave?" This made me even more confused about Anita’s purpose.
I was about to say something else when the door was pushed open and the one person I really didn’t want to see walked in.
