Chapter 55: Chapter 55: First Task as Luna

Valerie’s POV

I sat in the pack library with my laptop in front of me and some books about management piled on the side.

I have been coming to the pack for a few days now because I found that changing the environment instead of working in my room all day long helped me accomplish more.

But I don’t want anyone to find out what I am doing, so, I cover my actions by perusing management books to make everyone think that I was trying to learn how to manage the pack as the Luna.

Of course, I didn’t care one bit about the pack, but for some reason, some pack members have been too enthusiastic about me and kept coming to ask questions.

Thank God for the teaching Karl had done for me even though it was done with ulterior motives, it was now coming in handy.

I would give solutions to small problems and that has increased my popularity without me even trying.

Like the women in the pack. Those who are not warriors feel inferior, especially since others mock them for being a burden to the pack.

When one woman came to me a week ago while I was walking around the compound to stretch my legs, I had thought that she was going to throw insults at me like a few had already done.

Telling me that I wasn’t qualified to be Luna and I should vacate that position for Innocent.

Of course, I never react to such provocation. I have grown up with insults and beatings and they don’t scare me anymore.

But that day, I was surprised when the woman stood in front of me timidly and called me Luna.

I could tell that she was trembling from fear and I wondered whether I had done something to make her so scared.

But I knew that feeling all too well. When I was demoted to a slave in the pack at the age of ten, I had lived in fear everyday until my wolf appeared when I was thirteen.

So, I didn’t want the poor woman to suffer.

"You don’t have to be so afraid. I will not do anything to hurt you. Just speak your mind. If I can help, I definitely will."

Since she had called me Luna, she was probably in trouble and needed my help as the Luna of the pack. She wasn’t there to mock me.

"I...I...I want to ask Luna if you can provide work for us. Even if it is cleaning or doing other chores. Something that can help us earn some income. Other women who are warriors mock us and call us a burden to the pack. Some of our mates mistreat us too because they say we bring nothing to the table." By this time, tears were already streaming down the woman’s eyes.

I could feel strings tagging at my heart when I heard what she said. This was humiliating someone so much that they feel worthless.

If I didn’t have Lizzie, I probably would have fallen in the same path from how many times I was called worthless by pack members.

I didn’t expect that there were others without the title of a slave going through the same.

This pack is really rotten to the core.

I lifted my eyes and saw more than ten women huddled together a short distance away and watching me like prey watching a predator.

I took a deep breath and waved them over.

"Come over here, all of you."

I saw them flinch, then walk over more timidly than the first woman.

"Luna." They all bowed and greeted me in unison.

I looked at the way they were behaving and knew that their hearts were fragile.

"No need to be so formal. What Luna. Just call me Valerie. Let’s find a place to sit and talk." I don’t even like that Luna title. I was helping them because they are pitiful and not out of responsibility for my duty.

We walked to the playground built for children and sat on the benches around it.

"Can you now tell me in detail what is going on?" I asked casually because I didn’t want them to feel overwhelmed.

"Valerie." One of the younger women started.

Wow! She adapted quickly. I liked her already.

"Most of us married women came from other packs and were brought over by our mates. Unfortunately, it has become a challenge to be accepted by the rest of the pack. They treat us as outsiders even after some women have given birth to more than one pup. We are ostracised and our mates just care about keeping the peace, so they don’t defend us. Those who defend us are treated like outcasts making life difficult for all of us. We want to do something to show that we are contributing to the pack too. What can we do?"

I knew that the pack had problems, but I didn’t think that it was this serious. If all the women who come to the pack are treated like this, aren’t the people here worried that mates would start refusing to follow their other half back to the pack?

Also, these women come from different packs, what if they report back and all those packs unite to besiege the Night claw pack? Don’t these people have brains?

"Do the rest of you have the same problem?" I turned around, observing everyone there and they all nodded.

"It’s not just the few of us. A lot of the female mates who come from outside the pack face the same problem. Unless their mate has a very high status, they all face the same problem as us. However, they don’t think you can help, so they didn’t come." Another lady said straightforwardly, causing the others to look at me cautiously.

"Well, first of all, you should stop seeing yourselves as victims. Remove that victim mentality and think of how you lived in your own packs. Well, unless you lived as a slave like me. If not, I want you to remember who you were before you joined your mate here. To change how you are treated in the pack, you have to change how you treat yourself."

These women had their self-esteem completely crashed and if I wanted to make a change, we have to rebuild that first.
