The reply from Lady Bernice was even more surprising.

Why was she not standing up for her son? What exactly is going on?

So many questions ran through my mind in mere moments but I still couldn’t understand her actions at all.

"Why?" I decided to just ask directly because I wanted to know what will happen when I take steps in the future.

Lady Bernice smiled faintly at my question.

"Because the pack needs change."

Her answer was simple, but it confused me even more.

She had been the Luna for so long. If she wanted a change, she had been in the position to pioneer it. Why didn’t she? And why was she so easily supporting my actions?

Something felt very wrong.

"And because Mike needs to learn something." She added while I was still thinking.

"Learn what?" I couldn’t understand what it was that the alpha needed to learn from me.

"That leadership isn’t maintained through control alone."

She said with a hardened expression.

I began to see why she was so supportive. She must have gone through a lot as the Luna with a controlling mate and Alpha like Demon.

But some things were still not clear, so I decided to be cautious.

The room fell silent for a while before she spoke again.

"However.... " She was quiet for a few seconds before continuing.

"You’ve also made yourself a target."

"I was a target long before today."

I wasn’t intimidated by the issue of being a target.

I have lived the last eight years as nothing more than a target everyone felt they could trample. That was hardly news.

"It’s going to be more than before. And some people who thought you were beneath their notice will also join in." Lady Bernice warned.

"Then I will just have to face them. I am not afraid." I assured her.

She studied me for a while before she smiled.

"I believe you."

She reached for her book once more. An indication that the conversation had come to an end.

"You may go now." Just as I had expected. She dismissed me.

I stood up and bowed slightly.

It wasn’t a bow of veneration but respect. She wasn’t what I expected, and I respected her for that.

I walked out but before I could reach the door, her voice stopped me again.

"Valerie."

I stopped in my tracks and turned.

"Yes, Lady Bernice?"

"Don’t underestimate Mike."

She said suddenly.

I remained quiet for a second before replying.

"I won’t."

"He is conflicted. And conflicted men can be dangerous." She raised her eyes and held mine as she said that.

"I understand." I replied before leaving successfully this time.

Outside, the corridor was as quiet as before.

As I walked back toward the main wing, I felt dozens of emotions swirling beneath the surface.

There was anger, confusion, and relief.

But one thing that still confused me was the real reason Lady Bernice had called me. It was indeed not to punish me, but to test me.

Everything that was said in that room had been a test. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

And it looked like I had passed that test.

Unfortunately, what I failed to realize immediately was that passing her test put me directly in the center of the pack’s power struggle and that of the entire werewolf race.

As I walked back to my room, my mind was preoccupied with the situation Lady Bernice had just described.

I had indeed just given advice to those ladies because I didn’t like the way the pack treated them. Also, because I have suffered under other people’s oppression and abuse of power and understood how it feels.

However, I never planned to get involved in the fight for power within the pack or outside of it.

All I wanted was to clear my father’s name and get justice for him, then go live my own life after revenge.

However, the kind of power I wanted is the kind that crashes everyone to protect myself.

After living like a slave for so long, I didn’t want to go back there.

But now, my simple advice seemed to have gone wrong.

However, I didn’t regret it.

When I entered my room, I found both Lilith and Janice there.

The moment they saw me, their expressions were completely different.

Lilith looked genuinely worried.

It seems that she had also heard about my encounter with Mike and the former Luna’s summon.

However, Janice seemed to be celebrating something even though she tried very hard to hide her smug expression.

I know that she had been sent by Lady Bernice to monitor me, which was the reason I let her stay, but now, I don’t think she needs to stay by my side anymore.

I decided to take action regarding the people that enter my cycle because if I was going to face some enemies, I didn’t want people in my corner stabbing me in the back.

Lilith can be trained to be a loyal assistant. I don’t need her to be a friend, but I need reliable people who care about my wellbeing and won’t betray me at the first chance they get.

"Janice, leave us." I ordered curtly without much emotion.

Janice tensed for a moment and looked at me as if she wanted to say something, but eventually decided against it and left looking like a wilted flower.

"What do you need me to do, Luna?" Lilith asked respectfully.

No matter how many times, I asked her to just call me by my name, the girl insisted on being formal.

I had eventually stopped correcting her and just accepted the fact that she is a rigid person.

But this is also the reason I am willing to give her a chance to manage my affairs as an assistant.

"I need your help in collecting information. I want information about all the women in the pack who have married their mates and moves here. Those who didn’t grow up in the Night claw pack. The more detailed it is, the better. Include information about their mates as well."

I ordered Lilith because I want to be prepared when I face whatever is coming after all the fuss going on.
