Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 26: He Would Stomp You Into the Mud for Me
Winston Valentine instinctively placed a hand on her waist, fearing she might fall. Someone pressed the shutter button, freezing the moment in a photograph.
The embrace of a handsome man and a beautiful woman was as picturesque as a painting.
Vera Yves blinked her sore eyes.
Winston had only supported Cecilia Vaughn for an instant before helping her stand properly. "Mind the occasion."
Cecilia smiled at him. "Does that mean in other situations, I could hug you?"
Winston’s eyes darkened. "Cecilia, you’re overstepping."
The smile on Cecilia’s face froze, but she quickly regained her composure. "Sorry, I’m just too happy."
Beautiful music began playing, and people gradually moved to the dance floor.
Cecilia tugged on Winston’s arm. "I don’t want any other gifts, just dance with me as a celebration, okay?"
Winston didn’t move.
Cecilia watched him, her eyes slowly turning red. "I’ve done as you’ve told me: meeting people, dating, and even considering marriage. Would you not even dance with me?"
Winston’s expression softened, and he finally walked with her to the dance floor.
Vera looked at the two of them strolling across the dance floor, somewhat lost in thought.
She remembered a long time ago at another grand banquet, the person she’d once liked for a long time gently held another woman’s waist, dancing gracefully, looking at her with the most tender, affectionate eyes.
Tears welled up, blurring her vision as the two scenes seemed to overlap across time.
A faint pain emanated from her heart, a feeling she had forgotten how long she hadn’t experienced.
Suppressing the bitterness that couldn’t dissolve, Vera wiped away the tears from the corner of her eyes, wanting to get up and leave.
Melinda Shelby pressed down on her shoulder and handed her a glass of wine. "Put this in, and after Winston finishes dancing, toast him with this wine."
Vera looked at the glass of wine as if facing a ferocious beast.
"Think of your grandfather’s clinic," Melinda tightened her grip on her shoulder. "I don’t know any medical skills, but useless things are best burned; wouldn’t you agree?"
Vera’s heart sank into the abyss. Burn it down?
That was all her grandfather’s painstaking effort, and with one fire, it would all be gone.
Melinda slowly left.
She had long known Melinda wouldn’t easily let her go, but she didn’t expect Melinda to target the clinic.
Vera fell silent for a long time, gently pushing away the glass Melinda handed her, picking up another glass and stood up.
As soon as she stood, she bumped into Cecilia Vaughn walking towards her elegantly.
Cecilia raised her skirt hem and smiled at her. "Sister-in-law, thank you for coming, but you look a bit pale. Are you not feeling well?"
Vera shook her head. "I’m fine."
Cecilia’s smile was bright. "That day, when Winston took you away, he seemed quite upset. He didn’t do anything to you, did he? Winston has always been like that, unwilling to let me suffer even a little. If anyone bullies me, he’ll definitely return it in spades!"
Vera looked at her smile, calmly saying, "Isn’t your greatest grievance caused by him?"
Her words froze the smile on Cecilia’s face.
After a while, Cecilia finally regained her composure and whispered in Vera’s ear, "What are you pleased about? He only married you because he couldn’t marry me, so it didn’t matter who he married. But if you make me suffer, would you believe that for me, he would grind you into dust?"
How could she not believe it?
The red marks on her wrists were so conspicuous.
Vera stepped aside, walking forward as Winston approached, naturally taking the wine from her hand.
Seeing Vera looking at the wine glass in his hand, Winston raised an eyebrow, "Wasn’t this meant for me?"
Vera snapped back to reality. "Of course, it’s for you."
Winston took a sip of wine, looking at her pale face, feeling a bit unnatural. "Do you want me to... take you to the hospital for a check-up?"
Vera sensed what he was implying, her face also showing slight uneasiness. "No need, I’m fine now."
Winston resumed his distant and indifferent demeanor. "I just want you to understand where my boundaries are. If you still want to remain as Mrs. Valentine, don’t cross them."
She understood, his boundary was Cecilia Vaughn.
Vera couldn’t help but ask, "If I always remain as Mrs. Valentine, when will you be willing to have a child with me?" 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
Winston’s expression darkened completely. "Weren’t you clamoring for a divorce a few days ago? If there were a child, would you still be willing to leave?"
Vera seemed oblivious to his sarcasm and continued asking, "A year, or two years? Or will it never happen in this lifetime?"
"This lifetime?" Winston sounded as if he heard a joke. "So, Mrs. Valentine wants to be with me forever?"
Vera’s voice was calm. "Isn’t marriage’s initial intention to be together for a lifetime?" At least that was what she thought at the moment of marriage, and she had been working towards that goal.
Winston took another sip of wine, taunting, "But the premise of marriage is two people in love. Are we?"
In these three years, did he have no feelings for her at all?
"As for the child, don’t even think about it." Winston drained the glass, not even bothering to spare her another glance, and left the glass behind as he turned away.
Not willing to let her have a child, nor allowing her a divorce, he wanted to trap her in this prison of marriage.
She was really foolish to think someone as lofty as him would accept her deception, believing he would have no grudges living with her.
Vera watched as he walked towards Cecilia Vaughn, and she turned to leave.
Melinda blocked her path. "In such a hurry, where are you going?"
Vera replied coldly, "Home."
"Don’t you want to see the good show you directed yourself?"
Vera tossed the small glass bottle into a nearby trash can. "I didn’t put anything in the wine."
Melinda smiled. "Is that so? But Winston seems a bit tipsy now."
Vera turned back to see Winston’s tall figure wobble slightly, with Cecilia standing next to him, asking concerned questions.
Vera looked at her in surprise, "You..."
"Me? Did you really think I would count on you?" Melinda sneered. "You’ve worked hard to become Mrs. Valentine, why would you agree to another woman having Winston’s child?"
Vera’s face turned pale. How could she forget, Melinda was a businesswoman, skilled in calculation.
"Once the first time happens, it becomes easier the second time. Once Winston takes this step, there will be no going back." Melinda looked at her coldly. "Do you think he will despise you for this? In the future, you’ll have no choice but to watch them make beautiful music together."
Vera felt a chill throughout her body and tried to return, but two bodyguards blocked her way.
Melinda elegantly adjusted her clothing. "You must also taste the pain I endured, so you’ll understand what a foolish thing you did!"
Vera finally understood that from the moment she entered this banquet, she had already stepped into the trap Melinda had set, and there was no escape.
Heat surged through Winston’s body, reminding him of the first time with Vera three years ago.
Who had the audacity to plot against him!
"Winston, what’s wrong?" Cecilia looked at him with concern. "Why are you sweating so much? Do you want me to help you to the back room to rest for a while?"
