Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 5: The Yves Family Is Going Bankrupt
The man’s smile did not reach his eyes. Had he heard everything?
Vera Yves walked over with a guilty conscience.
Winston Valentine pulled her into his arms, his thin lips close to her ear, the gesture intimate but his voice cold, "Can’t ask for a divorce, so you’re teaching someone else to seduce me, huh?"
Vera averted her eyes, "I didn’t."
"Didn’t? I think you’d love to." Winston reached out, tracing the shape of her lips, mocking her with a laugh, "Want me to ask for a divorce so you can play the sympathy card and rekindle things with your old flame?"
Vera looked up in surprise, "Winston Valentine, what nonsense are you talking..."
The next moment, her lips were captured by his, his domineering kiss leaving her no room to breathe.
Cecilia Vaughn had just turned the corner and witnessed the two kissing. She stepped back in disbelief, a sharp pain in her chest, tears falling where she could not see. So this was their intimacy.
When the kiss ended, Vera was panting. Winston held her against him, looking at the figure that had already walked away, and said coldly, "I’ve at least spent three years sleeping with you. If another woman comes looking for you, even if you pretend, you have to pretend to be reluctant to part!"
After the family dinner, the driver took them back to the villa, and the journey was silent.
Once at the villa, Vera got out, and the car drove away.
For a week, Winston did not return to the villa.
Vera enjoyed the peace, spending her time watering flowers and going shopping with Linda Young.
...
The Valentine Group President’s Office.
Walter Lowell handed the documents to Winston Valentine, speaking respectfully, "President Valentine, this is the bid evaluation result for the North Bay project. A total of three companies met our expectations."
Winston glanced at the documents, noticing Yves Group among them, his eyes darkening, "Yves Group also qualified?"
Walter wiped the sweat from his forehead discreetly. Of course, Yves Group didn’t qualify, but that’s your father-in-law’s company. Who would dare exclude it? Seeking death?
"Compared to the other two companies, Yves Group is smaller in scale, but..."
"Have the project leader come see me."
Three days later, the Valentine Group announced the winning bid company publicly.
When Vera received a call from Walter, she was shopping with Linda.
"Madam, could you please come to the company? Mrs. Yves is here and refuses to leave."
Vera didn’t dare delay and drove straight to the company.
Seeing her, Walter looked like he’d seen a savior. "President Valentine is in a meeting, Mrs. Yves won’t leave, and no one can persuade her. I’m afraid when President Valentine comes out..."
Vera naturally understood the meaning behind his words.
Vera saw Hannah Hayes sitting outside the meeting room and went to pull her away.
Hannah shook off her hand, "I won’t go. I must have an explanation from Winston Valentine today!"
"Come home with me first."
Hannah’s face was stern, "Are you afraid I’ll embarrass you?"
"We’ll wait for him at the villa, okay?" Vera lowered her voice.
Hannah stubbornly turned her head away.
Not far away, the meeting room door opened, and Winston emerged first.
Seeing him, Hannah immediately rushed over, "Winston Valentine, why didn’t you let the Yves family win the bid?"
Vera hurried after her, blocking her way.
Winston glanced at Walter, "Take them to my office."
Hannah pushed Vera away, "I will make you tell everyone today why you didn’t let the Yves family win! Why did you go back on your promise?"
The company executives behind Winston looked embarrassed but couldn’t resist eavesdropping.
Winston’s expression was indifferent, "Mrs. Yves, no one promised you anything."
"What do you mean? Are you trying to back out?" Hannah was so angry her chest heaved.
"You can ask your precious daughter if I ever promised you anything," Winston glanced at Vera, "The bidding follows its procedures; the capable win."
Hearing his cold voice, Vera tightly held on to Hannah’s arm, "Mom, let’s go."
"Isn’t whether the Yves family is capable or not up to you?" Hannah looked at him angrily, "You just don’t like our Vera; you’re deliberately making the Yves family lose face!"
"Mom!" Vera was nearly breaking down.
Winston’s expression remained cold, as if he was looking at strangers, "Mrs. Yves, if you want to think that way, I have nothing to say."
"I knew it!" Hannah’s anger turned into a bitter smile, "Your old flame is back, and you want to push our Vera aside to prove your loyalty to her, don’t you? Let me tell you, not a chance! Our Vera had a miscarriage for you; you can’t be this heartless!"
Winston smiled mockingly at the mention of "miscarriage."
The probing gazes around made Vera feel cold all over.
"Enough! How long are you going to keep making a scene?" Vera pulled her, her voice trembling, "Come with me!"
"I won’t go!"
While the two were stalemated, Hannah’s phone rang. She answered, and her face turned pale.
"Vera, your dad just fainted and was taken to the hospital!"
Vera and Hannah rushed to the hospital.
Mark Yves was waiting outside the emergency room. When he saw Vera, he was furious, "It’s all because of your family’s Winston Valentine! You’ve been married to him for so many years, yet he won’t even let our Yves family benefit a little!"
Vera leaned against the wall, burying her face in her hands, unable to speak a word.
After some time, the doctor came out.
"The patient is out of danger, but he needs to rest and avoid further stress."
Vera let out a sigh of relief.
Hannah, hearing that Harry Yves was out of danger, seemed to collapse, and Vera quickly went to support her.
Hannah gripped her hand, crying, "Vera, Mom didn’t mean to embarrass you; it’s just that Winston Valentine went too far! Your father has been eyeing this project, thinking it would surely go to the Yves family, so he borrowed a lot of money and invested everything. Now that the project failed, the money is all gone, and our Yves family is going bankrupt! All of your father’s efforts are in vain!"
"Mom, I’ve told you many times that the project isn’t as easy as you think, so why wouldn’t you listen?"
"How was I to know that Winston Valentine would be so heartless?" Hannah gritted her teeth, "It’s all that Cecilia’s fault for coming back at just the wrong time! Otherwise, the project would definitely have gone to the Yves family!"
Vera knew it was useless to say more and asked helplessly, "How much do you owe?"
Hannah raised three fingers, "Three hundred million."
Vera frowned, "Are you crazy?"
Even for initial project investment, how could they need that much money at once?
Vera glanced at Mark Yves. After Hannah went with Harry to the ward, Vera called Mark to a corner.
"Did you spend the money?"
Mark replied matter-of-factly, "I spent it."
"How much did you spend, and where did it go?"
"How much could I have spent? I can’t remember. Anyway, the money’s gone." Mark said indifferently, "Besides, the money was borrowed from Sean; everyone knows my brother-in-law and Sean are like glue. Even for the sake of my brother-in-law, he won’t push us for it."
Vera’s gaze darkened; the Yves family had borrowed money from Theodore Xavier, so Winston knew about the Yves family’s intentions from the start.
