Transmigrated as a Stepmother: Time to Bring the Family to Prosper!-Chapter 306 - 305: Marriage Pressure in Ancient Times
"Third Sister-in-law!"
With no outsiders around, Liu Fei forgot to address Manager Qin.
Liu Bai was checking the accounts with a small notebook. The other drivers had gone home to rest. They only had this day off after a round trip, and the next morning they would set off with book boxes to Prefecture.
Qin Yao noticed that Liu Fei was noticeably darker, but the young man seemed to have grown taller as well.
Thinking about how Mrs. Zhang tried to set him up for matchmaking several times, only for him to go off with the convoy the next day, Qin Yao couldn’t help but smile.
"Why aren’t you going home?" Qin Yao teased Liu Fei.
Liu Bai was the team leader and needed to check on the details, so it was normal if he didn’t have time to go home and rest.
But there was nothing left here for Liu Fei to do, and the fact that he didn’t want to go home to enjoy this rare day off was rather unusual.
Liu Fei awkwardly grinned at Qin Yao, scratched his head, and said, "I got scolded out by my mom."
When Mrs. Zhang told him to get out, he left swiftly.
Liu Bai laughed and said, "His parents brought a matchmaker over, and as soon as he got home, he sent the matchmaker away."
You could imagine how angry Mrs. Zhang must have been.
Qin Yao teased, "Good thing you knew to run."
"Sigh~" Liu Fei plopped onto a pile of wood, distressed. "I just don’t want to get married so early, and I don’t understand why my mom insists on forcing me. It’s not like I’ll be single for life. I don’t understand why she’s in such a hurry."
"Now it’s even worse. With her urging, I have no interest in getting married at all. She wants grandkids? I guess she can forget about it..."
At this point, Liu Fei suddenly noticed Qin Yao gesturing for him to be quiet, but it was too late; an angry shout came from outside the door.
"Liu Fei! What did you just say? Single for life? Say that again if you dare!"
Liu Fei’s scalp tingled. He got up and ran in the opposite direction, instructing the two amused spectators, Qin Yao and Liu Bai, "Don’t tell my mom where I ran off to!"
"Where is he? Where’s that kid Liu Fei?" Mrs. Zhang stormed in angrily, not seeing him, and looked at Qin Yao and Liu Bai with suppressed rage and confusion.
Liu Bai shook his head, while Qin Yao randomly pointed in a direction, and Mrs. Zhang immediately chased after him.
"Who would have thought; Mom really has a fiery temper," Qin Yao said in surprise.
Liu Bai hadn’t seen his stepmother this agitated either. After all, she was his biological parent, with fewer reservations and more genuine emotions.
The two exchanged a glance and burst into laughter.
However, after laughing, they still had work to do.
Liu Bai led Qin Yao into the warehouse. "Of the first batch of three thousand book boxes, only two thousand are left. We can deliver the first batch to the Fulong Trading Company dock in less than two weeks."
"When we returned, the steward at the dock’s warehouse said they hoped we’d deliver the second and third batches of goods immediately after they’re produced."
Liu Bai was considering pulling another three shipments of raw lumber; after that, the convoy would return from Prefecture empty-handed, which seemed like a waste. He was contemplating whether to take on other jobs.
However, he worried that the drivers might get accustomed to this and refuse to cooperate when their transportation capacity was needed later, opting instead to earn extra money elsewhere. This left him conflicted.
Qin Yao didn’t dismiss his idea, merely saying, "Let’s get all the raw materials back first."
There was no need to worry about things so far in advance. Situations are always changing, and plans can never keep up with changes.
Hearing her say this, Liu Bai felt reassured, "Alright, then all that’s left is the delivery work. Our route to the dock is closer than going to Prefecture. A round trip is about six days. You mentioned not letting the company think we’re producing too fast, so shall we deliver four trips in August and three in September?"
Qin Yao nodded; that was fine.
Liu Bai needed to rest too. Once he finished coordinating with Qin Yao, he went home to relax and enjoy some watermelon.
Leaving the warehouse, Qin Yao went to the accounting office to check the day’s accounts with Liu Zhong and Uncle Qian, adding some money to ensure they had enough for operations.
Uncle Qian was the accountant that Hua’er mentioned, the one who worked at Huangque Town as Qian Wang.
Professional tasks should be handled by professionals. With Uncle Qian joining, Qin Yao could confidently step down from being the temporary accountant.
After the three finished checking the accounts, it was lunchtime. Qin Yao took out one hundred taels to settle the accounts, and the three went to the big canteen to eat together.
However, Qin Yao only had a few bites out of courtesy before heading home.
With Ah Wang around, even the big pot meals from the He family didn’t taste as good.
While eating, the sound of a carriage’s wheels rolling came from outside.
Ah Wang got up to check, finding a gray carriage stopped in their yard, with a simply dressed man in shoes with thick soles climbing out of it.
The man looked at Ah Wang in surprise, "Are you from Miss Qin’s house?"
Seeing the man recognized Qin Yao, Ah Wang relaxed his wary expression, saying he was a servant of the house and asked who the man was and what he wanted with the mistress.
"So, could you please inform Miss Qin that I’d like to see her?" Bai Shan was shocked. It had only been half a year since he’d last been to Liu Family Village, yet the changes were so significant.
Seeing a group of people repairing roads on his way in was already astonishing, and reaching the village entrance to see the bustling stationery factory left him even more amazed.
Standing before Qin Yao’s house and seeing Ah Wang, Bai Shan was on the verge of shouting: What on earth did I miss!
Qin Yao appeared at the main door with a cheerful smile, waving to Ah Wang, "Go slice half a melon and bring it to the living room."
Ah Wang acknowledged the instruction and went back inside to the kitchen to prepare.
Bai Shan, in disbelief, walked up to Qin Yao, pointing at Ah Wang’s retreating figure, "Miss Qin, what have you been busy with this past half year? You even bought a servant?"
Qin Yao invited Bai Shan inside and asked Ah Wang in the kitchen to bring a bowl of water to the driver outside, then led Bai Shan to the living room to sit down, laughing as she explained,
"I didn’t do much; I just made a few Divine Power Book Boxes, took a trip to Prefecture, and struck a small business deal." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Qin Yao poured him a cup of cool tea, and Bai Shan sipped it while glancing around the room, feeling something had changed but unable to pinpoint exactly what.
Looking more closely, he realized the interior had more furniture and a few ornaments.
Ah Wang walked in with the sliced melon, placing it on the table in front of them, then stood by the door, ready to follow any instructions.
Bai Shan had come specifically for the tempting, sweet scent of the cool melon in front of him.
But before discussing business, let him first savor a couple of slices of melon to satisfy his craving!
Qin Yao patiently waited for him to finish before asking, "How are the millstones selling? You haven’t come by in the past half year. Did you find a better business opportunity?"
Bai Shan smiled and didn’t answer, feeling a bit unsatisfied after two slices of melon. He took a sip of tea and curiously asked her,
"Miss Qin, is this cool melon for sale?"
Qin Yao looked as if she was not very interested.
Bai Shan thought he knew her well enough, and offered, "Thirty cents a pound, no matter how much you have, I’ll take it all."
Qin Yao replied, "Deal!"
Not pausing a single second longer would be disrespectful to money!
