Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 159: Inquiring in Person
Yi Weiliang rode a bicycle for three or four hours from Huaixi County to the Xintang Production Team. The rice in the fields was already bearing grains, though still quite green. In a little over a month, it would be ready for harvest. To prevent sparrows and other birds from eating the grains, many scarecrows were set up in the fields.
It was almost five o’clock now, and people who had been working were gradually finishing up for the day, carrying their tools home. Yi Weiliang came back on his brand-new bicycle, and the people in the team greeted him with smiles.
"Weiliang is back. This bicycle must be newly bought, right?"
"Team leader, no way, I’m just a temporary worker, this is my sister’s bike I borrowed." Yi Weiliang replied with a smile.
"A temporary worker is good too, especially in the transportation section. You’ll be driving big trucks in the future, that’s promising."
"Weiliang, the iron pot at home with a hole is almost unusable. Now that you have a job and can get industrial coupons, could you replace it for your aunt?"
"Auntie, I just started working a month ago, who knows when I can save enough to buy an iron pot, probably in the distant future. Besides, I give all my salary and vouchers to my mom. Our family hasn’t split up yet; you better talk to my mom about that matter in the future."
...
When Yi Weiliang got home, Yi Shunyin and Yi Weijun were washing their mud-covered hands and feet in the yard, their faces sunburned red. The two sisters-in-law were busy in and out of the kitchen, and the three young ones were being guided to clean the mud off their clothes.
"Uncle is back!" Yi Junya was the first to see Yi Weiliang and called out excitedly. For the past month, every time their uncle came home, the family had the best meals.
"The brother-in-law is back." Weng Hefeng and Pan Kexia were also excited to see Yi Weiliang and simultaneously called out to him, then the two sisters-in-law glared at each other. After all, there might only be one spot for an apprenticeship in the transportation section, and they were competitors.
"Weiliang is back. I’ll fry you an egg," Liu Huilan said happily.
"No need, Mom, I’ll eat whatever there is." Yi Weiliang didn’t care about that. What he was thinking about now was about Liu Youning.
"How did it go today with the matchmaking?" During dinner, Liu Huilan couldn’t help but ask, and the rest of the people at the table all looked over.
"Mom, it’s not suitable." As soon as Yi Weiliang said this, Liu Huilan was taken aback.
This matchmaking was something Yi Weiliang had agreed to himself. It was from the Wan Tang Production Team, his own family’s suggestion. She thought it would work out, but now it wasn’t. Something must have gone wrong.
"That Youning child is being mistreated in that family. How can a family like that raise a good girl?" Yi Weiliang said angrily.
"What!" Liu Huilan was shocked. Since her parents passed away, she rarely returned to the Wan Tang Production Team and didn’t know much about what was going on there. "What are you thinking then?"
"Things should be resolved in some time; let’s wait and see. I’m going to check in on the child tomorrow," Yi Weiliang said quietly.
"Okay," Liu Huilan nodded.
"Who is Youning?" Weng Hefeng hesitantly voiced, not understanding any of the conversation between her mother-in-law and brother-in-law.
"I’ll tell you tonight," Yi Weimin said, prompting Weng Hefeng to ask no more.
"Brother-in-law, what’s happening with the apprenticeship spot in the transportation section?" Pan Kexia couldn’t resist asking. Not asking was making her uncomfortable.
"Don’t speak out of turn," Yi Weijun frowned, tugging on his wife’s sleeve. "As long as one of us can go from our own family, it’s fine. Anyone would do."
"What do you know, it makes a difference. Junfeng and I rely entirely on you to settle in the city. If the son-in-law succeeds, it’s because he’s good in school. Our Junfeng needs to attend a good school early on," Pan Kexia remarked confidently.
"We only have boys, but does that mean Junya and Junbao from the oldest brother and sister-in-law’s family don’t need schooling? What kind of thinking is that? You’re being too selfish." It was rare for Yi Weijun to speak so harshly to Pan Kexia, to the point where she looked at him in disbelief and angrily stood up.
"Second sister-in-law, I’ll tell you straight. If you want to return to your family or want a divorce, I agree," Liu Huilan said directly, blocking the threats Pan Kexia was about to utter. Her face turned red and blue with anger, but she could only sit down, unable to challenge the importance of the apprenticeship position in the food factory’s transportation section.
Weng Hefeng glanced at Pan Kexia with mocking eyes, causing Pan Kexia to roll her eyes in bitterness.
"Nothing is decided yet, I cannot say." Yi Weiliang looked at his two older brothers and sisters-in-law and could only say this, hoping the family wouldn’t fall out over this matter.
"Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore. Whoever gets to go, will go. The salary and vouchers are for the family anyway; everyone benefits," Liu Huilan summed up. "As for your concerns about the children’s education, as I said before, either all three children go to school, or none should. Otherwise, whoever goes while another doesn’t could end up feeling slighted."
"You are mothers and may care more for your own children, but I’m the grandmother, and I love all three children. I can’t let any child feel we’re being unfair," Liu Huilan declared righteously.
Neither Weng Hefeng nor Pan Kexia could argue against her; while they were at work, the three children were left to Liu Huilan, and everything was shared equally—egg custard, white rice porridge—justly and impartially, although Pan Kexia felt slightly uncomfortable as she had only one child.
However, Liu Huilan pointed out that Yi Weiliang, the youngest son, didn’t even have children yet. At the age when the second son already had Junfeng, Weiliang had sacrificed so much, yet he never complained even as he went for the apprenticeship and turned over his salary without keeping anything. Nothing was said.
The meal ended peacefully under Liu Huilan’s instructive words.
Lou Wenjian was particularly attentive to matters concerning military family members. Even on a Sunday, his day off, he rode his bicycle to the Wan Tang Production Team. He did not reveal his identity, only inquiring about how Liu Guangmao’s family was doing.
Liu Guangmao was Liu Guangliang’s older brother and currently the one raising Liu Youning.
"Where are you from?" A member of the Wan Tang Production Team looked at Lou Wenjian, attired smartly and with a bicycle beside him. Even though he had a slight limp in his right foot, it was clear he was an educated comrade.
"Someone asked me to inquire. They thought it’s about time for matchmaking," Lou Wenjian said softly, and clever people immediately understood.
"Liu Guangmao has three daughters, the first two are of age now," the middle-aged man with a hoe smiled. "They’ve all had schooling up to middle school and look good. Many families have approached about engagements."
