Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 56: Saving the Wolf
"Howl—" A spine-chilling howl filled Yi Roujing’s ears.
Yi Roujing looked up directly at the lead wolf. The lead wolf stopped its howling, and the surrounding wolves also fell silent.
Yi Roujing lifted her hand and slashed with her knife, cutting the little wolf’s throat, accurately locating the trachea, and inserted the sharpened end of a bamboo tube, then used her mouth to breathe air through the hollow bamboo.
Yi Roujing continued to breathe without pause, her face growing redder, and sweat began to drip down, until she felt a faint breath passing through the other end of the bamboo, she finally stopped. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Whimper—" A feeble and soft whimper resonated, yet at that moment, it clearly spread all around.
"Whimper—" The lead wolf lowered its head with a call filled with joy, and the surrounding pack responded.
"Anmin, hold this bamboo, don’t let it fall," Yi Roujing called out.
Ding Anmin’s entire body felt weak, but given the situation, she had no choice but to carefully hold the bamboo.
"If the little one stops breathing, blow into it. I’m going to find herbs nearby, but I need some needle and thread, may have to go down the mountain," Yi Roujing, though not a veterinarian, was a master’s student in general surgery and had been an intern at the hospital. She knew basic first aid methods; she had practiced stitching, though the current situation limited her options.
"I brought needle and thread," Ding Anmin replied, both hands holding the bamboo, only able to gesture with her eyes, "In the pocket of my work pants."
Yi Roujing raised her eyebrows and gave Ding Anmin a smile, "You’re really capable."
"Are we going to die here?" Ding Anmin didn’t dare lift her head now, surrounded by wolves, afraid that if she did, she’d be gone.
"No." Yi Roujing replied with a smile, "Don’t worry. If I come back and find you’re bitten to death, I’ll avenge you and send them down to accompany you."
"Be a decent person," Ding Anmin glared angrily back at Yi Roujing, "What good does that do if I’m already dead?"
"I’ll just search nearby." Yi Roujing glanced at the lead wolf, then turned and left, not sparing any herbs she could find that could reduce inflammation, relieve pain, or stop bleeding, such as large green leaves, dandelions, bupleurum, burnet...
After finding some, she quickly returned, washing the dirt off with water, and using a clean stone to crush them before applying the paste on the little wolf’s neck.
"Is this reliable?" Ding Anmin worriedly asked.
"It can’t wait, or it’ll die." Yi Roujing said seriously, knowing the delay was risky, "All right, you need to go down the mountain, ask around the brigade if anyone has any antipyretics and antibiotics, and bring them up to me. Chinese medicine works slowly; we need Western medicine."
"If the brigade doesn’t have any, go to the commune health clinic to buy them, and hurry." She took over from Ding Anmin, holding the bamboo herself.
"I don’t want to leave you here alone." Ding Anmin, though afraid, knew two people were better. If she left, what would happen to Yi Roujing?
"So hurry back, then we can go home sooner," Yi Roujing suddenly smiled, her smile was strikingly beautiful.
"Hold on, I’ll be back soon." Ding Anmin gritted her teeth and ran quickly down the mountain.
Strangely, none of the wolves followed in pursuit.
"Rest assured, I’ll do everything I can to save your child." Yi Roujing turned to look at the lead wolf, resilience and hope reflected in her eyes.
"Whimper—" The lead wolf responded, and Yi Roujing felt moved. Whether it understood or not, none of the wolves moved, all held back by the lead wolf, and it did so for the sake of the little wolf in her hands. Parental love knows no bounds, whether in humans or animals.
The place with the highest likelihood of having medicine was the brigade leader’s house, Ding Anmin thought of this first, so she ran straight to Ding Xiaoding’s house upon descending the mountain.
Though it was the working hour, the brigade leader’s wife, Huang Kaiying, should be home. Since the brigade’s canteen had closed, the brigade leader’s wife had joined the Women’s Federation to always be ready to serve other women. Unless she had something to do, she was usually at home.
"Kaiying, Kaiying, are you home?" Ding Anmin called loudly.
"Hey, I’m here, I’m here. Anmin, what’s going on? Why are you covered in sweat? What happened?" Huang Kaiying came out of the house, noticing Ding Anmin’s disheveled state and hurried up to show concern.
"Kaiying, do you have any fever reducers and antibiotics at your place?" Ding Anmin urgently asked, "It’s a life-or-death situation."
"What happened, who’s in trouble?" Huang Kaiying rushed inside to grab some medicine, taking out two small white paper packets, "The names of the medicines are written on them, you..."
Ding Anmin grabbed them directly and ran off, shouting as she ran, "Kaiying, I’m in a hurry, I’ll come back later to pay you!"
"Hey, slow down, slow down," but Ding Anmin was already out of sight. Huang Kaiying, feeling uneasy, put on a sweater, intending to check on Ding Anmin’s home. If it was serious, they’d have to take them to the hospital.
Unexpectedly, Ding Anmin made a swift return, surprising Yi Roujing. The round trip to the mountain and back in under an hour left her taken aback by the young woman’s determination and drive.
"Huff, huff—" Ding Anmin was too breathless to speak, simply placing the paper packets aside and lying on the ground panting heavily.
"Take your time regulating your breath, and have some water later. You’ve sweated too much." Yi Roujing expressed some worry.
"Huff, huff—" After a while, Ding Anmin finally managed to speak, "I’m, I’m, fine, you, you do your thing..."
Seeing she could speak, Yi Roujing resumed her actions, one hand holding the bamboo, the other removing the herbs from the wound, "Anmin, once you’ve rested, come help me."
Ding Anmin managed to get up, inwardly sighing at the lack of humaneness, yet she did not hold back from helping.
"Hold this."
Ding Anmin extended her hand to stabilize the bamboo.
Yi Roujing glanced at the words on the paper packets, noticing they contained both fever reducers and antibiotics. A hint of a smile appeared on her lips; there was still hope.
She took out an antibiotic tablet, crushed it, and sprinkled it on the little wolf’s wound, then grabbed the needle and thread, lighting a nearby fire, causing the wolf pack to take a step back, their eyes revealing caution, their sharp teeth bared angrily.
"Howl—" The lead wolf called, and silence returned.
Yi Roujing sterilized the needle over the fire, once cooled slightly, she threaded it, "When I tell you to pull, remove the bamboo."
"What!" Ding Anmin’s face was full of fear.
"Relax. It’ll be okay," Yi Roujing reassured, "I’ll count to three, one, two..."
"I’m not ready, you..."
"Three."
Ding Anmin acted decisively, pulling out the bamboo, blood spattering, yet surprisingly little in quantity. Yi Roujing felt the wound and began to sew blindly, her needle moving with an efficiency that was almost artistic, leaving Ding Anmin watching in awe.
With both layers stitched up, Yi Roujing crushed another antibiotic, sprinkling it on the little wolf’s neck, and then leaned in close to its mouth to feel for breath—there was none.
