Chapter 188: A Past Tie [ 2 ]

[Amon’s POV]

A day had gone by since Clementine brought back the Vermillions’ bodies.

I honestly didn’t expect there to be such a story. But then again, I was glad we at least had someone on our side.

That meant when we eventually go to get our names cleared, it’d be a little bit easier.

Even so, Clementine had been very quiet for the last day. Since I knew she needed time to process everything, I didn’t tease her or bother her.

Still, after a day of travel, we finally arrived at the town where Vincent and his demon daughter lived.

Yet as I stared at the desolate town, the absence of Vincent and his daughter was quite apparent.

I could still sense traces of their energy, but those traces led outside of the town.

"I’ll head down. You can stick around here if you want."

Clementine nodded blankly. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

As for me, I descended into the abandoned town and slowly approached Vincent’s home. Surprisingly, the door was unlocked, so I stepped inside.

The stench of blood was pretty strong. It was especially strong in the room where his daughter should’ve stayed.

But right as I was about to approach her room, I spotted a letter in place of where I last saw the father and daughter picture.

I carefully grabbed the letter, tore it open, and then read it.

If you’re reading this letter, I take it Kai was right when he mentioned you also had a tracking Gift. I’m impressed, but I’m also very careful when it comes to my family. You know about my daughter, and I take it you visited this place to either kill her or use her as leverage to turn me into your pawn.

I’d hate both outcomes. So that’s why I’m leaving this letter, as well as moving far away. I assume you can still track me, so my daughter and I will be moving constantly.

Thank you for not killing me back then, Amon. But alas, in the eyes of the people I used to work for, I have died in that explosion. For both our sakes, I ask you to burn this letter and forget about my existence.

With peace and kind regards in mind,

Vincent.

"..."

He’s stepping away?

After doing all of that?

Why?

Even after hanging around Kai and likely knowing some of the demons’ plans, he still thinks he can find some safe place to live in this world?

I crumpled the letter and tossed it inside my dimensional ring.

So far, we only had Rain in our group.

Obel and Vincent, on the other hand...

"This is so annoying."

Why is it so hard to recruit capable people?

No wonder these guys never appeared in the original story that much.

They just ran away.

Shaking my head in disappointment, I stepped out of Vincent’s home and flew back over to Clementine.

She wasn’t in the sky anymore. Instead, she was in the center of the city, sitting on the edge of a drained fountain and holding a torn plushy toy.

When she noticed me, a barely noticeable smile appeared on her face.

"Amon? Do you think if we ever get the choice to sacrifice ourselves to save this world, we’d take it?"

"If I ever got that choice, I’m not taking it. You’re not taking it either, since I’m not letting you," I deadpanned.

She chuckled.

"Fair enough."

Tossing the plushy back into the fountain, she stood up and tiptoed over to me.

"Feeling better?" I asked.

She nodded.

"A little bit. From your sour expression, I take it we got rejected again?"

"Yep. We got rejected through a letter this time. I’m afraid to think of how we’ll get rejected next."

"Hmm~? Maybe we won’t get rejected? We already have a few of the 12 Calamities on our side. Also, Kevin and the rest of the main cast should join us if we train them, right?"

At Clementine’s reply, I just shrugged.

"At this point, I’ve got no clue if having them around will even change anything. Still, we should get moving, since we have some stuff to do."

"Okay. Are we heading to the Elodrenia continent right away?"

I shook my head.

"I’m going to have a talk with the Eldritch monster. As for you... Maybe visit your parents? It’s been a little more than a month."

She pouted.

"I’m not visiting them without you."

"Well, I’m definitely not taking you to meet the Eldritch monster," I replied sternly.

She stomped her heel like a child, then turned around with a huff.

"I’ll just wait outside then."

I rolled my eyes.

"No. You’re going to go back home and get a change of clothes. Since I’ll be taking a bit of time, stock up on some erotic mangas. Or was the library you begged me to get you just for show?"

Noticing that I was treating her like a child, Clementine walked up to me and pinched my cheek.

"I’ll grab my comics. And don’t call them erotic mangas. They are pieces of literature that help me learn more about the world."

Eh...

Sure.

"If you say so."

"I’m serious!"

"Yeah yeah..."

Ruffling her hair slightly, I gave her a kiss on the nose, then wrapped my arms around her waist, surprising her slightly.

But before she could even say a word, I turned both of us into lightning and quickly dashed off toward the Skyward Continent.

The moment we reached Lenice, I waved at Clementine, who waved back at me with a pout and soon vanished into the distance.

Since we moved so fast, it only took a few hours to arrive back here, and of course, since Clementine’s not in harm’s way anymore, I took a deep breath and entered Lenice.

The city was as lively as I remember. Though, there were a bunch of kids walking around with bruises on their knees, as if they had fallen.

I was usually there to patch up small injuries like this, but now that I decided to scrap my Mikael persona, I was just Amon.

Eh.

I guess I haven’t done many good deeds this month.

I might as well...

Reaching into my dimensional ring, I pulled out several healing potions containing my blood.

Then, I whistled at one of the kids, getting their attention.

I wiggled the potion in my grasp, then set it down on the ground beside me, alongside four more potions.

The kids immediately recognized the potion and ran up to it. Yet the moment they looked up at me and tried to thank me, I turned into lightning and reappeared on a nearby roof.

As I watched them drink my potions and heal their injuries, I was satisfied.

I really should ask Clementine to teach me some healing techniques.

Healing techniques seem fun.

Though that’s enough of that.

I turned into lightning and swiftly reappeared inside the sewers, then began making my way toward the Eldritch monster.
