Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Not an Ordinary Bed

A warmth spread through Tang Xiaonan’s heart. ’I’m so glad I transmigrated.’ In her past life, no one had loved or cared for her, but now so many people doted on her, not letting her suffer the slightest bit. Being spoiled by the whole family felt so good, a very, very special kind of happiness. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

’To make sure I can be spoiled like this my whole life, I have to work hard to change the Thorne family’s fate.’

After getting dressed, Tang Xiaonan hopped off the bed and shuffled outside in her cotton-padded slippers, her hair a total mess. She didn’t know how to tie it up. In her past life, she’d had short hair her entire life and had never once worn braids.

"Xiaonan can dress herself now! Oh, my sweet girl..."

Beaming, Phoebe Huxley picked Tang Xiaonan up. The change in her daughter over the last couple of days was especially noticeable. It was as if she’d grown up overnight, becoming more and more mature.

"Mama, something smells nice," Tang Xiaonan said, pointing toward the room.

Phoebe Huxley froze for a second before she understood what Tang Xiaonan meant. "That’s the scent from the bed," she said with a smile. "You won’t smell it anymore once you get used to it."

She had no idea what kind of wood the large, carved bed was made of. It was incredibly heavy and pitch-black. Felix Thorne had hauled it home ages ago. It was certainly sturdy, though. She and Felix Thorne weighed a ton combined, but after sleeping on it for over ten years, the bed didn’t so much as wobble.

She used to smell the fragrance often during the first few years, but now she didn’t notice it at all.

Tang Xiaonan’s heart skipped a beat. ’The scent of the bed?’

’That must be the natural fragrance of the wood. Wood that can give off a scent... Don’t tell me this bed is made of some kind of precious wood?’

Tang Xiaonan was ecstatic. ’That carved bed really doesn’t look ordinary. Even though it’s pitch-black, the patterns are dense and intricate, with many parts carved in openwork. So much effort lavished on a single bed... it’s not something an ordinary family could have afforded.’

’But the Thorne family had been farmers for eighteen generations. So where did the bed come from?’

"Back then, I just thought the bed had a nice, peculiar smell, so I decided to bring it home. It took seven or eight guys just to lift it. We spent a whole day moving it," Felix Thorne said, sounding rather pleased with himself.

Phoebe Huxley scoffed derisively. "And I had to feed those good-for-nothing friends of yours two meals! Wasted several pounds of meat and over ten pounds of rice, all to bring home this piece of junk. You can’t even chop it for firewood! Everyone else was so much smarter, bringing back gold necklaces, gold rings, and silver dollars. You..."

Felix Thorne hurriedly cut her off, bellowing, "Are you tired of living? Go make dinner, now!"

Phoebe Huxley knew she’d misspoken. Looking sheepish, she muttered as she headed for the kitchen, "That gang’s long gone, so what’s there to be scared of? You’re so chicken-hearted..."

"Why don’t you just shout it into the village loudspeaker and let everyone hear!" Felix Thorne snapped.

That finally shut Phoebe Huxley up. The sounds of pots and pans clattering soon came from the kitchen. Felix Thorne huffed, but when he turned his head and saw Tang Xiaonan’s dazed expression, his face immediately broke into a wide smile.

Tang Xiaonan was lost in thought, her mind reeling. ’This bed clearly isn’t a Thorne family heirloom. Felix Thorne must have swiped it from a wealthy household during the "Destroy the Four Olds" campaign. Phoebe Huxley mentioned that others had made off with gold and silver dollars—and a lot of it, too. That means the original owners were very rich, so this bed can’t be anything ordinary.’

’I can’t be certain, though. It’d be so embarrassing if I got it wrong. But I still have to guard this bed. I absolutely cannot let Phoebe Huxley chop it up for firewood.’

Tang Xiaonan suddenly realized, ’The author never mentioned this bed in the book—not even a single word. Has my arrival changed the world of the book?’

’In that case, the destinies of the Thorne family and Adrian Hawthorne can be changed, too, right?’
