Chapter 259: Missing

Few minutes after Lucian witnessed Kale’s strange breakdown, his chest tightened into a sharp knot, constricting him until he could no longer move or breathe.

They had finalized everything at the north park last night, and they had agreed to fight the battle together after he’d promised them complete freedom in the empire once he took the throne. Everything had been a success, and they’d planned for the war to be in three days after their return, intending to attack unexpectedly with the pack of werewolves.

But things had begun to go wrong on their journey back, causing them to stop. They had been moving through the forest in their other forms at full speed, with Lucian in the front, as he couldn’t wait to get back home to his beloved wife. He had felt her miss him terribly, but she was fighting to keep her emotions at bay through their connection. She might have tried to suppress her feelings, but he could still feel them, which made him want to return to her, bask in her warmth, and make love to her until the day they’d part again for the war.

God, he’d missed her so much that he had not slept a single night since leaving the palace. He’d lain awake every night in the north pack, thinking about her and recalling the image of her on the night he left. It had been hard that night to leave her behind, and he wanted nothing more than to go back to her.

That morning, he’d been the one to wake everyone to get on their way back. He couldn’t wait to kiss her lips, touch her, feel her against his hardness, and keep her in bed for the three days they had before the war. These were the thoughts running through his mind as they sped back until he heard the others falling behind him.

He wouldn’t have stopped to see why they had stopped if not for the loud roar of Prince Kale. He had turned back to see the rest shifting back to their human forms after Prince Kale, who lay on the forest ground clutching his chest, roaring and crying out his mate’s name. His cries sounded anguished and agonizing. He kept repeating:

"No, no, no. You can’t leave me. Please don’t. Don’t, Nadia, you can’t. Wait for me."

He had been saying that before he went still like a rock on the ground for a moment, then cried out—an ear-piercing cry that even made Lucian flinch slightly at the sound. He didn’t know exactly what was wrong with the prince, but from what he observed, he was certain it had something to do with his mate. For the first time since he’d known about the were-people, he watched a man cry like a child. Kale was tearing up and shaking uncontrollably. He kept calling her name, and though his brothers tried to hold him, he pushed them away as he trembled with sorrow and pain.

"Nadia... she left me behind... she left me... she’s gone... I can’t feel her anymore... she’s gone..."

He kept saying this over and over as he slammed his chest. Right before them, he transformed and staggered up with red eyes, still crying in his wolf form, before speeding away into the trees like a mad animal.

"Something must have happened to her. We need to go back before he gets there and does something crazy to the people back home," Talinor said to his other brothers, who were wondering what might have happened to Nadia.

They were still there when Lucian also clutched his chest and fell to his knees as if he wanted to throw up, though nothing came out of his mouth even as he gagged a few times.

"Are you all right?" Prince Acer questioned as he noticed the strange look on Lucian’s face while he clutched his chest.

Lucian clenched his other hand against the soil. He glanced up, his eyes wild.

His wife!

Danger. Frightened. She was feeling panicked.

But why? Did something happen back at the palace?

With those thoughts piercing his brain, he was on his feet in a flash and transformed into his mighty beast, making the rest step back as he towered over them.

He raced through the trees at a speed impossible for normal eyes to keep up with, feeling for her with his heart and trying to reassure her panicked state that he was coming. If only she could feel him.

Pain. She was in pain!

He cursed the emotional bond that allowed him to share her feelings but not obtain words or hints about her location or what was happening to her. What was happening back there? How could she be in danger when guards were around and the other princesses were in the palace to fight? Had the Empress’s men gotten to her?

He raged through the forest like a maddened beast, fighting the urge to bellow for her, aware he was too far away for her to hear. Every ounce of his intellect absorbed her fears, sponging them up, rendering him senseless. Suddenly, everything went silent in his mind. He couldn’t feel any emotions from her anymore.

Even when Ave was asleep, he had been able to feel her. He had felt her during her nightmares when she was frightened by them. Since the day he’d marked her, her emotions had never been as silent as they were now.

Recalling Kale’s behavior and how he had said his wife had left him, Lucian almost hit a tree, blinded momentarily by the fear of losing her.

He had to remain logical before his emotions and fear caused him further delays instead of reaching his wife on time. He could faintly feel her when he tried to relax, bringing a small ray of hope that she wasn’t... he didn’t even want to say the word because it frightened the living hell out of him. He didn’t want to think it or entertain it. She was his life, and he could not afford to lose her. He would not lose her. Never.

Lucian reached the Nazia palace in less than two hours, though the journey remaining should have taken over six hours. He arrived just in time to sense the heavy air in the atmosphere even before entering.

There were people gathered outside the palace, and he recalled his wife’s words on the day they had parted:

’I’ll be fine, I promise, and I will be here waiting for you when you return. I’ll be standing right here on that day, in the front, waving my arms to you,’ she had promised.

He held onto that promise as he slowed down, looking among the crowd to see if she was in the front, waving at him.

She was not there.

In fact, the royals gathered outside all had grim looks on their faces, and they dared not go inside as Kale was raging and crying for his wife. They stood outside.

Lucian didn’t have to announce his presence; his panicked state made them all aware of him. His presence pressed down on the air, suffocating the weak ones.

The Pendragon siblings were among the people outside, and they watched in fear as a mighty beast walked into the palace. Only the werewolves didn’t look frightened but confused as they sensed his overwhelming presence.

Lucian was shaking intensely as he looked around for his wife’s face among them, and when he couldn’t find her, anger began to slowly overcome him before he could control himself.

"Where is my wife?!" he thundered the moment he shifted back to his human form in front of everyone, his voice shaking from the intensity of his emotions.

Isolde and Celeste passed out when they watched him shift.

Nobody had even realized Ave wasn’t among them until he’d asked. They looked around at each other in confusion over where she was. They had been too consumed with the loss of Nadia that nobody had bothered to look for her after she left the room hours ago. Being human, they had understood that she would need some time to recover from what she had witnessed, and Nina, in particular, had thought she had gone to her room to recover as she looked sick when she left the room.

When Nina noticed the savage look on Lucian’s face after taking a robe from someone who handed it to him, she mustered the courage to walk up to him and say, "She must be in the room. She looked sick when I cut Nadia open to remove the baby. She had been against killing the mother to save the child," she informed him as she reached out a hand, intending to make him calm down as the air around him was still crazily overwhelming, but he sidestepped her and walked into the palace.

Nina followed on his heels because she had something to talk to him about, but first, she needed him to check on his wife and be assured that she was fine and only recovering.

Lucian ignored the bellowing and resounding roar of Prince Kale as he went on to look for his own wife. He couldn’t feel her around, but even then, he still wanted to check. As expected, she was not in the room. He reined in his rising anger at the fact that no one had cared to look for his wife since they hadn’t seen her around. He had felt her emotions three hours ago, but no one had thought to check up on her.

He searched and looked all over, and when he couldn’t find her, Lucian lost the last strings of his temper. He turned on the only person close to him, who happened to be Princess Nina, who had been helping him look around, and grabbed her by the neck.

"Did you purposely allow something to happen to my wife so you can get your way?!" he accused as he lifted her off her feet, squeezing her neck. He was too blinded by his rage to think of anything. His wife was not in this palace. Someone had come in and taken her away right under their noses, and no one had seen anything. This Princess was the last person to see her. He couldn’t think of anything but to believe she had something to do with it. She didn’t like his wife and thought she wasn’t fit for him.

Nina felt herself floating in midair as he squeezed her windpipe like he would kill her. His eyes were wild and angry; he looked like a devil crawled out from hell and on a mission to kill if his precious treasure wasn’t brought out to him. She didn’t try to struggle because she knew it was useless. He was a hundred times stronger than she was.

He released her all of a sudden, and she fell to the ground, coughing and clutching her neck. Looking up, she saw only his retreating shadow because he had left the palace as his men called for him outside. It was almost unbelievable that he had almost killed her for his wife. They were friends before, and he had been nothing but nice to her until now.

Nina smiled bitterly. If any feelings she had for him were still left even after she knew that he’d marked his wife, she killed them right this instant. A man who would kill her for something she had not done would never look at her with love.

Outside the palace, where Lucian’s men had searched the entire premises and realized the back gate had been opened and the men guarding it had been put to sleep with a spell, he knew without a doubt that his wife was taken. Zane rushed back holding a purple bracelet after an hour of searching outside the premises.

"We found it in the forest beyond the palace. Someone had drawn something like a spell on the ground of the forest. It seems witches are involved," he reported gravely, but then, seeing the angry look on the prince’s face intensify, Zane fell to his knees along with the other men.

"Forgive me, Your Highness. I failed to protect her or be there when she needed it. I am sorry..." he bowed his head in apology. He had not been inside the palace because he was busy training in the courtyard, and he’d believed he was in view of the front gate and nothing would have happened without his knowledge, but he’d been wrong.

Lucian wanted to punish every single person in the palace for not being there for his wife, but he knew he couldn’t even afford to waste time doing that when he knew where she must have been taken to. The Empress had put a huge prize on her head, and witches and humans and every creature alike would give anything to have that huge prize. Every minute counted now that she was taken; he must not waste time punishing them when he should be rescuing his love.

He looked down at her bracelet in his palm and felt his throat constrict with emotion. He didn’t want to imagine the situation she must be in at this moment. His love was taken, and he’d get her back if he had to turn the damn world upside down to find her. She mustn’t be harmed, or those who had her would face a fate worse than death.

Aveline, he whispered in his mind, I’ll find you.

"I have put this off for too long. It’s time I get it over with. I will kill whoever dares lay a finger on my Aveline!" he gritted as his amber eyes flamed dangerously. He stormed away, and Zane followed behind him. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"Where are you going, Your Highness?" he asked in concern, even though he knew Lucian hadn’t forgiven him for not being there for Ave when he’d promised to protect her in his absence.

"To get back my wife and the throne," he said blankly as he transformed into his beast form and sped away from there before anyone could stop him.
