Chapter 296: Rosa

Ave could not sleep that night; she paced around her well-decorated chamber, feeling restless. She had been mad at Lucian for the past few days for forbidding her from leaving the palace without a reason. She was the Empress, but her authority wasn’t like her husband’s; the guards didn’t listen to her when she told them she needed to go out.

Rylan had given her a spell book to practice and learn how to use it without having to summon her Rosa. She had passed most of the days practicing the spells while also allowing herself not to feel guilty for the way she had refused her husband entrance into her chamber.

The first weeks she had moved away from his quarters had been hard for her, but the thought that he wouldn’t allow her carry his child had pushed her to live on and not dare go to him.

Whenever the others came to eat dinner in her quarters, as she had trained her kitchen cook to make modern dishes, she always felt bad because Lucian was left alone. Even Zane would come, and Alden had been dragged to the table by his sister to make him taste the food one night. She had been tempted to go and meet him as everyone ate and made jokes, but she always talked herself out of it.

But it killed her every day to know he must be feeling lonely and left out when everyone was with her. Though she was surrounded by family, without her Lucian, she never felt complete.

He had come to her at night sometimes and then stopped coming because she ignored him. The last time he came, he had called her name outside the door with a shaky voice laced with longing. She knew he could open the door with his powers, but he hadn’t. He stayed there and told her to let him in, even if just for one night. He promised to just hold her to sleep and nothing else. He even said she wouldn’t take note of his presence; he would be as quiet as a mouse. But she had ignored him and pretended to be asleep.

He had then told her, "Fine. I won’t disturb you again. Good night..." And then he’d left, and true to his words, he never came back to her quarters again. Ave had cried herself to sleep that night as his pleading voice to let him in kept playing in her head.

Was she doing the right thing by pushing her husband away to have their child in secret? What if he stopped loving her and decided to get another woman? She’d thought, but she knew that was stupid of her to even think, as Lucian would never.

Ave had been the one pushing him away, yet she became heartbroken when he never came back to her again. From heartbroken, it turned to anger when he started to give orders to his men not to allow her to leave the palace or even walk around the palace premises.

She had demanded from him why, but he’d replied with, "Because I said so. You are to never leave the palace again." Ave had already become hypersensitive these days, and his coolly written reply had gotten to her. She’d angrily taken a parchment and called him all sorts of names she thought he deserved to be called for being a jerk.

He had replied again to her cursing him, "Those aren’t new to me, my love. You’ve called me all that before. Trust me, I wouldn’t restrain your movement if it weren’t for your own good. Don’t leave the palace."

That letter had cooled down her temper as she pieced two and two together and figured he was worried for her safety. Even before she moved out of their chamber, she had noticed he had become paranoid. But then she really needed to leave the palace to do something important outside. That was why she had made excuses to go and meet the children that day.

It was so important she feared if she didn’t do it, everything would come apart. She needed to do it for his sake and their future.

Ave continued her pacing while biting down on her fingers in anxiety. She had thought she would never get associated with Rosette for as long as her Rosa powers did not awaken, but it seemed she was wrong.

Strange things had been happening to her for the past month now. Strange things she couldn’t place a finger on. She had dreams of a life that wasn’t hers, and most of the things that happened in the dreams slipped out of her memories the moment she woke up.

First, she had dreamed of her life with a man she didn’t know, but he gave off a familiar vibe that was similar to Lucian’s. She remembered none of what happened the next morning except that she had a heated argument with him in the dream that made her so angry even after she awakens from it.

Not just that, she always experienced something strange every night and just few nights ago it happened again. She saw a woman in a white light. She had long silvery hair that shone like diamonds with eyes the color of white crystal. The woman had looked sad and angry at the same time she spoke to her. She had talked to her about something that Ave believed was important, but she forgot it the next morning.

However, she recalled one thing, though: "His sins are far greater than I could forgive..." Those words had resounded in her head as she woke up. Whose sins? She’d pondered on that for hours, but even after thinking it through for days, only one sin came to her mind, which was Roland’s.

Who was she, and why had she appeared in her dreams to talk to her? And why did she forget everything said to her by morning, only remembering a few of it? Had her husband’s curse not been lifted? Was his past sin still left unforgiven even though she was now in his life?

She had no idea what was happening to her. If this continued, she might slowly go insane with no one knowing.

Ave hated having these dreams as they made her feel scared every morning she woke up. It was like she was being watched, and the dreams were waiting for her to close her eyes so they could haunt her at night and make her restless.

From the spell book her brother had given her, she had learned a spell to repel persistent dreams, but to perform the spell, one had to be far away from the living people and closer to the dead. Whatever the hell that meant, Ave had figured it meant the graveyard, and she had looked into the empire map and found there was a graveyard close to the place where Lucian had arranged for the orphaned children.

Ave didn’t like the dreams because they made her feel unlike herself and filled her with anxieties and unknown fears. Just yesterday, she had woken up from another dream, and when her eyes fell on her reflection in the mirror, she had seen her eyes change to purple, and something shone on her chest. Looking at it, she’d seen a purple flower mark shining before it vanished again right in the middle of her chest.

Ave knew what that was—the Rosa mark. She hadn’t done anything to trigger the Rosa, and the spell she was learning was something even a non-witch could use if they practiced and learned it. Rylan wouldn’t have given it to her had it been something harmful.

Her powers were being triggered by those dreams, and she needed to stop them because she didn’t want to be the Rosa and end up being like Rosette. She didn’t want to carry any heavy duties of punishing the sinners or carrying the burden of the entire witch clan on her head.

All Ave wanted was a family and a home, and she had that already with her lovely husband. If everything went as planned, she would have their first child.

Her bump had already begun to show, and if it weren’t for the dresses the seamstress had been making for her, everyone would have noticed her bump as she wasn’t using the tight corset anymore.

She didn’t know whether to tell Lucian about the dreams or not. She needed to go out of the palace; perhaps he would allow it if she told him why. He could even come with her. But then she wasn’t ready to meet him face to face.

Seeing him would make all the walls she had put up to harden her heart and mind to live separately come crumbling down the moment she saw him. But then, could she risk refusing to tell him and end up becoming what she didn’t want to?

Ave placed her hand against her slightly swollen abdomen as she stopped her pacing after coming to a final conclusion. She would have to tell him about her dreams and the weird feelings. She couldn’t afford to keep quiet and risk messing up things.

But then she would have to meet him tomorrow, as she didn’t think she would dress into one of those complicated gowns the seamstress had delivered to her the day before she moved out of his chamber. Her silk nightgown made her bump even more prominent, and she couldn’t go like this to meet him.

She would tell him about her dreams tomorrow. Perhaps he might also know how to stop them or what could be causing them. With that thought, Ave sighed and went to lay on her bed. She stared at the empty space beside her, and her heart ached at the thought that her husband would have been there.

Even now, she dreaded falling asleep, as she knew the dreams would haunt her again, and she would forget them in the morning. But then she needed to sleep so tomorrow would come and she could meet Lucian.

Ave also had to meet the seamstress and take the other dresses she would deliver to her tomorrow in Lucian’s quarters. She would meet him tomorrow. She missed him so much—his kisses, touch, and caresses, his morning voice whispering in her ears, and his mouth closing around her nipple in the morning. She missed having him tease her.

Ave fell asleep thinking about all the days they had been together. However, that didn’t stop her from having yet again another dream that made her wake up early and begin to freshen up to meet her husband. She needed to speak with him urgently.
