Chapter 303: The surprise

"Of course, a man can wear it. If you want it, I will talk to the seamstress and tell her to make one for you."

"I want the same color as yours," he said quickly, taking Ave by surprise.

"By God, I cannot quite imagine a big man like you in a purple color." She chuckled in amazement, trying to imagine her husband’s tall, all-muscular figure clad in such a color. But seeing how serious he looked and seemed about wanting the same color as hers, she nodded her head.

"All right, purple it is. I will make the arrangements after the banquet tomorrow," she assured him, and he beamed and leaned in to finally kiss her, but Ave blocked his kiss with her palm and reached her other hand to take his large hand in hers.

"I have a surprise for you. Come with me," she said when he looked down at her questioningly for stopping his kiss. However, hearing she had a surprise for him, his face brightened up like a boy who’s been given his favorite gift on Christmas morning.

"Really? What’s the surprise?" he asked, almost sounding eager.

Ave chuckled. "It will no longer be a surprise if I tell you what it is, will it?"

Lucian laughed out loud as she pulled him down the hall. He intertwined their fingers and allowed her to lead him to whatever surprise she had prepared for him, but he could barely contain his curiosity about what she had for him.

He didn’t care how small or big the surprise was but for as long as it was from his precious Ave, he would take it in a heartbeat and cherish it. freeweɓnøvel.com

When they reached the open hall, he frowned slightly as he noticed the other family members standing around murmuring to themselves. The moment they saw them, they all stopped talking and flashed him a smile too bright and tight to be real.

Lucian was about to ask his wife what was going on and why everyone was out here as he sensed something fishy when she pulled him into the library.

She walked into the library with him and then pulled her hand away from his. Before he could grip her hand again, she slipped out of the library, and he heard the door slam behind her, followed by the sound of it being locked.

Lucian turned to the door with a bewildered expression as he couldn’t believe she had locked him in here. "My love, what do you think you are doing? Where is my surprise?" he asked as he knocked on the door from the inside, sensing she was right outside it.

"It’s inside. I won’t let you out until you two get together," came Ave’s voice.

"You two? Who is the other person?" he asked with a frown, but before his wife could reply, he felt a presence behind him and turned around.

"I have been locked in here for one hour without an explanation by my own younger siblings," Prince Alden grumbled in angry disbelief. "Tell them to open the door this instant!"

He had been tricked by Orion and Isolde into coming to see something in the library that they were all afraid to approach. Being their eldest, he had left what he was doing to see what could have frightened them in the library, only to realize they had locked him inside. He had banged on the door, ordering them to open it until he was tired and exhausted from threatening them.

Alden had gone to sit down, passing time reading The Art of War, waiting for someone to come and open the door. He had heard the sound of the door opening and had rushed over, only to see they had locked Lucian in with him. What were they up to? And what did they think they were trying to achieve by locking him in with this bullheaded, stubborn brother of his?

"We will open the door, Prince Alden, but I am sick and tired of seeing you two regarding each other with resentment. I love you both, and I want to see you two behaving like brothers. I will open this door when that has been achieved, or you two will remain in there until tomorrow!" came Ave’s voice from behind the door.

"Yes, Her Majesty is right. We are family now, and we should all treat each other as such without resentment!" Lady Seraphina agreed. Though everything had been fine among the Pendragon family now, it wasn’t the same for those two. They had never spoken to each other like brothers but like strangers.

"My love, are you forgetting you can’t lock me in? I can open this door if I want to," Lucian said to his wife calmly as he glared at the door. He had nothing to talk to Alden about, and he wasn’t ready to have any words with him that didn’t require the court members’ presence.

Years of being tortured by him still bore in his mind and wouldn’t easily go away just because he had given up the throne and fought by his side. Alden could have chosen to see the truth in front of him in the past but instead chose to believe the easy lie and poured all his anger on Lucian and his mother.

He had suffered at his hands in the palace, and when they went to war, he had been forced to sleep out in the snow because Alden’s men didn’t want to share a camp with a monster and a son of a witch. Lucian had been no more than fifteen or sixteen then.

They tormented him and bullied him until he hated himself more than anything. And now they wanted him to forget everything just like that? Never.

He would neither forget nor forgive, but he would live with it in peace. That was the only thing Lucian could do.

Without even turning to look at his elder brother, he reached out his hand and used his powers to open the door. But the moment the lock clicked open, it clicked closed again as Ave used a spell she had learned to lock it back.

He tried to open it again, but his wife locked it once more. "Aveline! Stop it and let me out of here!" He punched the door in frustration.

"Not until I sense the air of forgiveness. You are wasting your time, my love. I will wait for you out here. Go talk to your brother. I am doing this because I love you and want to see you happy and at peace with every one of your family," Ave remarked softly to him.

Ave heard him curse savagely, but he didn’t bang on the door again. She turned to the others behind her and saw that they looked nervous and uncertain when they had eagerly agreed to her plan to bring the two together this morning.

"What if he punishes us when he gets out? He’s the Emperor, and we have no right to lock him in there," Celeste voiced her concern as she subconsciously gripped her brother’s arm. But Orion jerked away from her and faced Ave.

"It was all your idea. You better explain that to Brother Alden once he comes out. He threatened to thrash Isolde and me if we didn’t open the door earlier. I am too old to be beaten," he muttered, but a glare from his mother made him clear his throat and move back.

Thalia, who had made the plan with them and had joined them after returning from the newly doomed palace, also voiced her worry. "I hope they get along in there, or we will all be in trouble once they get out of there."

"You all should relax. I have a feeling everything will be just fine after this. Trust me and let’s wait out here," Ave assured them as she leaned against the wall. But just then, Rylan walked up to her with a cushioned, comfortable chair and put it down for her to sit.

"You shouldn’t stand for too long. If you will wait out here, you should sit down." He placed it down and pushed her gently to sit on it, then ordered the servants to serve her milk tea. Ever since the day he’d heard about her pregnancy, Rylan had become extra careful and attentive to her.

As he was attending to Ave’s comfort, Seraphina frowned. "No one has bothered to introduce this man to me. He just started living here out of nowhere. Where did he even come from?"

She had begun to see him in the palace after the coronation, when the guests had left. She knew every single one of their royal guests, and this man had never been part of any of the families. His striking eyes and hair were not something one would easily forget had she seen him before. And now he was interfering in their family’s affairs like he belonged with them. Who did he think he was?

Though his face reminded her of someone, she didn’t want to bother thinking about who.

Rylan had not bothered introducing himself to the woman because he had believed she would have been told who he was. He had transformed into Rylan the moment the Banzai family left the palace.
