Chapter 30: Entourage

After saying that, she turned toward the path they had taken to get to the dungeon and went back to her room, locking the door.

She resumed what she was doing earlier—finishing logging into the Black Exchange. After that, she started searching for average hacking jobs with high pay.

She could hack, but unlike killing, she wasn’t a pro at it. Eira sighed; she really wished the AI hadn’t disappeared or that it would appear right at that moment.

Hoping not to mess up, she started going through the jobs.

Eira’s mind buzzed as she scanned the list of hacking jobs on the Black Exchange. Her fingers hovered over the trackpad, unsure which to choose. Each job promised a hefty payout, but the level of difficulty ranged from average to elite. She wasn’t an expert hacker—far from it—but she was resourceful, and the thought of failure made her grit her teeth. This was just another puzzle to solve, a necessary step for survival.

She clicked on a mid-tier job. The task was simple enough: retrieve sensitive corporate data for a client. The pay was $25,000.

The company wasn’t a major player, but the stakes were high for whoever was paying. Eira exhaled slowly, setting the parameters and connecting through a secure proxy. If she could just get through this without raising any alarms, she’d have the money she needed in no time.

Even if Lyle promised to provide her with everything she asked for, she didn’t want to depend on him for everything. She wanted to leave a way out for herself in this deal, and she would, one way or another.

A faint notification blinked on the screen after almost two hours—job progress: 50%. She cracked her knuckles and resumed, her mind sharpening as the lines of code blurred together.

Finally, she finished the job, and her phone notified her of the payment. It was time to go home.

...

Eira leaned against the black SUV behind her and stared at the trio in front of her.

Jania stood next to her, her arms crossed, watching as Liam and the Asian man in the suit talked in low voices by the vehicle. They seemed to be finalizing some last-minute details, but Eira’s attention was elsewhere. She looked up at Jania, curiosity flickering in her gaze.

"Why the entourage?" Eira asked dryly, raising an eyebrow. "I thought I was just going home."

Jania’s lips twitched into a small smirk. "You are. But Master Aelion insisted on making sure you were escorted safely. We can’t have anything happening to his bride-to-be, can we?"

Eira rolled her eyes, folding her arms. "I can take care of myself. But I suppose there’s no arguing with him, is there?"

"No," Jania replied simply. "There’s not."

"Alright, Han and two bodyguards will accompany you home, Ephyra." Liam came forward, a wry smile on his lips. "So when will we meet again?"

Eira shrugged. "I don’t know, Doctor Liam, but this won’t be the last time, as I will be marrying your patient." She laughed, making Jania shake her head, trying not to smile.

"Master Lyle doesn’t like being referred to as a patient."

Eira put on an innocent expression. "But that’s what he is. He shouldn’t deny his condition, should he? After all, I’m his cure," she said with a small smirk, her eyes glinting mischievously.

"He may not deny it, but Lyle would rather be seen as anything but weak."

Eira nodded, understanding. Lyle Aelion didn’t want sympathy or concern—he wanted control. And yet, despite everything, here she was, becoming the one person who had any real power over him. It was ironic, really.

She shifted her gaze to Han, the man who would escort her home. He looked sharp and professional, with a hint of something dangerous lurking just beneath his calm demeanor.

"Han, right?" Eira asked, sizing him up. He gave a curt nod.

"Correct, Miss Ephyra."

"Let’s get going then." Eira pushed off the SUV and started toward the vehicle’s door. She paused briefly and turned back to Jania and Liam. "Make sure Lyle knows I’ll be in touch. And... tell him I said thank you for the gifts."

Liam chuckled lightly. "We will pass along the message."

Without another word, she climbed into the back seat of the SUV, settling into the plush leather interior. The door shut softly behind her, and soon, the vehicle pulled away from the estate, leaving behind the cold stone dungeon and all the hidden shadows it held.

Eira stared out the window as the city passed by, and soon her eyes closed.

[Master, are you asleep?]

The AI hadn’t even finished asking when Ephyra’s eyes shot open.

[AI? Is that you?]

[Yes, Master.]

[Where the hell have you been? I’ve been so worried!]

[I apologize, Master. Though I’m not sure, I think it was due to a system disruption—]

[You’re not sure? Then could it be an external force? Because as soon as I met that guy, the AI disappeared.]

[Except if it is another system interfering with my functions, Master. I will need time to analyze the potential causes.]

Eira sighed deeply, rubbing her temples.

[Fine. Do your analysis, but stay alert. I can’t afford for you to disappear again.]

[Understood, Master. I will remain on high alert.]

After almost an hour, they drove into the Allen Family Mansion’s compound.

———

Myra and her mother had been worrying about Ephyra suddenly turning up alive and the fact Rico couldn’t be reached.

They really hoped she was dead.

Myra paced back and forth in the dimly lit living room, her mother perched on the edge of the couch, her fingers tapping anxiously against her knee.

"What if she comes back and tells everyone?" Myra snapped, her frustration boiling over. "We can’t have her ruining everything we’ve worked for!"

"How can she be alive? That wimp can’t even stand up for herself, much less survive whatever happened to her," her mother replied coldly, though a hint of worry flickered in her eyes.

"But what if she did?" Myra shot back. "We still don’t know what happened to Rico! He should’ve told us something by now. What if she somehow managed to escape?"

Her mother pursed her lips, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "If she does return, we’ll deal with her. The plan hasn’t changed. We’ve worked too hard to let her ruin it."

Just as Myra was about to reply, the sound of tires crunching over gravel caught her attention. She rushed to the window and peered through the blinds.

Her father’s black Maybach drove into the compound but it was followed by two other cars.

"Mom... two other cars are following Dad’s car. Who are they?" Myra whispered uneasily as she made room for her mother.

"I don’t know, maybe he invited his business partners over for dinner but he should have informed me..." Marianna stared out the window and saw her husband and his secretary standing outside their car seemingly waiting for the people in the two cars to come out.

This further cemented her thoughts that the people in those cars were business partners.

However, their blood ran cold when they saw Ephyra stepping out of one of the vehicles, her eyes scanning the house as if she owned it. Her expression was cold and unreadable, a far cry from the timid girl they once knew.

Myra’s breath caught in her throat. "It can’t be... she’s supposed to be dead."

Marianna’s heart skipped a beat, her mind racing. "How is she alive? Rico was supposed to handle this!"

Myra’s panic flared. "Mom, what do we do? If she talks, it’s over for us!"

Marianna clenched her fists, her face hardening. "We stay calm. Let her make the first move. If she’s come back, there’s a reason. We’ll deal with her just like we dealt with everything else."
