Chapter 80: Assembly

Eira made her way to the school gate and was surprised to see that a lot of students were already in school. Well, it wasn’t supposed to be surprising because of the announcement made by the principal on the school forum. It was said that everyone had to be early to school to attend the assembly, which was going to take place in the hall.

However, Eira still found it surprising because only a few students would normally be in school before her. The students, both female and male, were lounging around the courtyard and school building in groups. Walking forward, she made her way to class. Once she stepped into the class, she heard someone calling her name.

"Ephyra! You’re here," Cyran’s voice was loud and cheerful as he waved her over to their seats.

Smiling, Eira waved back and walked over. Then she sat down. "Hey, Cyran. You seem very cheerful."

"Yeah, I don’t know why, but I’m amped up for the tests."

"Oh." Of course. Eira nodded, her smile widening. "That’s good. Let’s hope Malia also feels this way and not the opposite."

Cyran’s cheerful expression dimmed. "Yeah, you’re right."

"Wanna revise?"

Cyran nodded hastily. "Sure."

Almost ten minutes later, and five more minutes to go before the assembly, Malia walked into the class, hastily making her way to them.

She hit both her hands on the table. "I’m fucking crumbling under pressure."

Eira and Cyran exchanged a look with Orla, who sighed before rolling her eyes.

Cyran reached out to pat Malia’s hand lightly, his tone teasing but kind. "Relax, Malia. You’re not crumbling; you’re just dramatically procrastinating."

Malia groaned, burying her face in her hands. "No, Cyran, this is it. This is the moment I turn into a full-on disaster. Exams? Assembly? Expectations? It’s all too much."

Eira chuckled softly, closing the book she’d been using for revision. "You’re always like this before exams. And then you ace them. Just take a deep breath."

Orla leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms with an unimpressed look. "You’ve been saying this since our first year, Malia. It’s getting old. Maybe you should focus more on studying and less on whining."

Malia shot Orla a glare but didn’t argue. Instead, she flopped into the seat next to Cyran. "You’re all so mean. What happened to being supportive?"

Cyran grinned. "We’re supportive in our own way. Tough love, you know?"

Before Malia could reply, the bell rang, signaling the start of the assembly. The class began to file out, the chatter of students blending into a chaotic hum as they moved toward the school hall.

Eira stood and grabbed her bag, glancing at her friends. "Come on. We’d better get going before they send someone to drag us there."

Malia groaned again but got to her feet, following Eira and the others as they joined the stream of students heading to the hall. The atmosphere in the corridor was buzzing with anticipation, a mix of excitement and dread.

Once they reached the hall, they found seats near the middle, where they had a clear view of the stage. The principal stood at the podium, adjusting the microphone, and the buzz of conversation gradually died down as students settled into their seats.

Malia leaned closer to Eira, whispering, "What do you think this assembly is even about? They’ve been so secretive about it."

Eira shrugged slightly, her gaze fixed on the stage. "We’ll find out soon enough."

The principal cleared his throat, his voice booming through the microphone. "Good morning, Wildcats. Thank you for being prompt this morning. Today’s assembly is an important one, so I ask for your full attention."

A hush fell over the hall as the principal continued. "As we approach the end of the school year, we want to recognize the incredible talents and achievements of our students. But more importantly, we want to address some of the challenges that come with being part of this community."

Eira exchanged a glance with Cyran, sensing the shift in tone. The principal’s words seemed heavier than the usual motivational speeches they were used to.

"Recently," the principal went on, "there have been incidents of bullying, rumors, and divisions within our student body. This is unacceptable. Our school is meant to be a place of learning, growth, and support—not hostility."

A ripple of murmurs swept through the hall, but the principal held up a hand for silence.

"This should have been addressed before, but it was delayed due to some incidents. Now, I fear it is too late. However, severe punishments will be given to students who repeat these acts until the end of the exams."

"Of course, it’s too fucking late," Malia hissed, and Eira patted her arm.

"Now, onto the real reason why we are all gathered here. The yearly banquet the school sets up will be moved to the end of the exams."

As soon as he said that, the students burst into excited chatter. The annual banquet was always a highlight, filled with music, food, and a chance to celebrate the end of the academic year. Everyone had thought they were canceling it this year because of the unusual school schedule.

"Finally, some good news," Malia muttered. Then she turned to them, her expression teasing. "I told you, didn’t I?"

"Yeah, yeah." Orla waved dismissively.

"And it’s right after exams, so you have something to look forward to," Cyran added, nudging her lightly with his elbow.

The principal raised his hand again, and the hall quieted. "We expect all students to participate and to conduct themselves with dignity and respect. The banquet is not just a celebration—it’s a reminder of the values we uphold in this school. Let’s make it a night to remember, for the right reasons."

With that, he stepped back, and a teacher took over to give the usual reminders about exam protocols and schedules. Eira’s thoughts drifted as the teacher spoke, her gaze wandering around the hall.

She noticed a group of students near the back, whispering among themselves with smirks on their faces.

"Ephyra?" Cyran’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts.

"Hmm?"

"You’ve been zoning out. Everything okay?"

Eira forced a smile. "Yeah, just thinking about the exams. Let’s head back to class once this is over."

The assembly wrapped up with a reminder to stay focused and disciplined during the exam period. As the students filed out of the hall, the excitement about the banquet lingered in the air.

Back in the classroom, Malia slumped into her chair with a groan. "Banquet or not, I still have to survive these exams first."

"Don’t worry," Cyran said with a grin, "we’ll survive together. Right, Ephyra?"

Eira nodded.
