'Last Empire? That doesn't sound foreboding at all.'

[Within this interface, the Progenitor can manage all aspects of his kingdom. This includes headquarters, stationed Valkyries, settlements, commanders, soldiers, workers, resources, occupations, etc.]

With every added responsibility, Nick's face fell more and more. How the hell could he manage all of this! Couldn't he like, just pass on all of this to Amelia or something?

Or maybe Juliana. Nick imagined her zapping a worker and decided against it.

But how could he run a kingdom? This [King of the Cosmos] stuff should have just been limited to the battlefield really.

"So here's the stairs. Uh, I guess that was obvious." Amelia's chuckle took Nick's attention away from the system's screen for a second.

She was leading Juliana on a tour through her mansion. Juliana herself actually seemed to be very interested, and more importantly peaceful. 'Whenever she gets mad, just show her a nice, big grand house that costs way more than you can afford.' Nick noted.

They walked up the stairs, oblivious to Nick just standing behind them. Juliana was far too engrossed in her mansion, and Amelia was far too happy as she finally had someone trustworthy who cared about these kinds of things.

'Well, it's good that they can become friends. We're gonna be fighting these world-ending threats after all.'

Nick chuckled to himself as he shook his head and opened the system's interface again. If Juliana could be friendly, then he could at least try to be a leader.

'Hopefully, it's like a gacha.'

Nick took one last deep breath as he selected the [Last Empire] interface.

...

[Welcome to the Last Empire!]

A blonde girl smiled at Nick as she waved.

'Is she the tour guide then? And why does she look so familiar?'

Nick racked his brain for ideas, her name right on the tip of his tongue. He knew for a fact that she was a character from Aether Babes though.

Unlike Juliana, this one was mute and used the system to speak.

[Would you like to proceed with the tutorial?]

[Y/N]

Yeah, of course...

His mind lingered over the word yes as he remembered the last tutorial this game threw at him. That stupid snake almost killed him and Juliana...

But girls were more trustworthy, right?

'Yes!' Nick decided and then the world went dark.

A second later the light returned to the world, but with a blue cover and many white, grid-like lines. It looked the same as a builder mode in any game.

To the left of his vision, he saw 5 different icons. Overhead he saw one more, which was just an eye.

Having a gamer's curiosity, he clicked the eye and then his stomach instantly hurdled. He was 1,000 feet in the air!!!

[That is the bird's eye view! Right now your empire is constricted to just the tutorial area, but eventually, it will span cities and then kingdoms and then continents and then worlds! That is the scope of the Last Empire!!!]

Wonder filled Nick as he looked down, seeing nothing but an avenue for power, for safety. For now, he was constricted to just the tutorial area, but...

'Tutorial area? Isn't this Amelia's house?'

The blonde girl glitched for a second before returning to her normal smiling self.

[That is the bird's eye view! Right now your Empire is constricted to only Amelia's mansion! You are lucky that you met her, or your starting point would've been a back alley! Eventually, your Empire will grow from this mansion into cities and then kingdoms and then continents and then worlds!!!]

'What the hell was that?!'

Nick stared at the woman with a mix of curiosity and distrust.

Why would she call Amelia's house a tutorial? Amelia was already bound to him as a Valkyrie, so he knew he could trust her.

At the same time, he had never seen any kind of kingdom building in Aether Babes. He knew that the concept existed and how to play them. Resource management was a fundamental aspect of both gacha and kingdom building.

It was almost certain that he'd quickly learn the best ways to utilize the resources he was given. So, he wasn't too worried.

Buy low, sell high. Min-max everything.

That kind of jazz.

[If we look below, we can see that the mansion is covered in a yellow glow. These are assets that you can select and then receive more information about them. For example, select the mansion now.]

'Ok.'

Nick's eyes grew wide as it seemingly quadrupled in size. He knew that it was just an effect of the system, but it was still shocking. After all, it was the first time he had ever seen a house grow like that in real life.

The source of this c𝐨ntent is freёnovelkiss.com.

Additionally, a line of information appeared in front of Nick's face, like a game.

'Duh.'

[Type: Headquarters;

Level: 1;

Reputation: 10;

Valkyries stationed: 2/5;

Reward Paths unlocked: 0]

Before Nick could even question this information the girl was leading him on. Usually he hated it when a game forced the tutorial, especially when it was something painstakingly obvious that any idiot could figure out.

The biggest thing he had probably learned from any tutorial was how to smash the a button (X for playstation).

[As you can see, the process is straightforward. First, any building you click on will show you its type. In this case, the mansion is a headquarter. This is a place where you can station a Valkyrie. As your reputation within the region increases, and as you use resources to upgrade the headquarters, its level will increase, and you can unlock rewards within the rewards path.]

[A reward path contains multiple options. For starters, you can increase your own personal stats by going along the personal rewards tree. If you want to build your kingdom faster, however, you can go along the worker path. Finally, if you want to boost the power of the valkyries stationed at this headquarters, you can upgrade the valkyrie path. This will increase their production here, their stats, as well as their skills in combat.]

'Wow. That sounds pretty strong actually. Basically, the best option for now would probably be the kingdom route though. I can combine Amelia's taunt skill with Juliana's strong AoE lightning to increase their strength for now. In a similar fashion, I can just use my Emperor's Slash. With that, we would be able to clear many small dungeons in no time.'

'Well, assuming they aren't rigged again.'

Nick paused for a moment, knowing it was a real possibility. However, it wasn't like there was anything better to do for now. They needed to get stronger. Gamers grind to get stronger.

'Well, if I killed all the other raiders in this town, no one would be left to rig them.' Nick thought with a half chuckle. Of course, that was off the table.

He knew that if there were people out there clearing high-ranking dungeons, he would be no match right now. Nope, he'd have to level up first.

The thing is, by focusing production in the early game later on he would be earning resources extremely quickly. And then those resources would be used to upgrade the other paths as well as whatever he would unlock later.

'Well then, time to see what I can upgrade, eh.'

The girl laughed as she shook her head.

[No upgrade points available]

'Of course.'

Another area lit up in yellow right afterward, this time an empty piece of land he assumed was Amelia's.

[You can contract workers to fulfill jobs, allowing you to gain resources and upgrade your various lands. There are 7 ranks of workers, and starting from the worst they go: Sleepers, Eaters, Ants, Cake, Bootstraps, Busybees, and Exhausted.]

'Half of these look like a joke...'

[Because Amelia has the Billionaire Trust Fund Baby perk, you have unlocked a Bootstrap worker named Ivan. He is exceptional at growing plants in labs.]

[Worker: Ivan;

Qualification: Bootstraps;

Level: 1;

Perks: Good Stuff;

Occupation: tending the plants]

[Production Perk: Good Stuff – This worker does his tasks 5 times as efficiently, vastly improving production]

Nick nodded in admiration as he whispered, "Huh. Not bad."

Then he screamed as the bird's eye view mode ended and he was thrown back to the ground.

[Tutorial completed!]

...

Nick rubbed his head as he was affected by a nonexistent injury. Really, this recent journey was entirely mental so he hadn't actually physically hit his head off the ground.

Not that that made the pain any better.

"N-Nick!! Sorry!"

He laughed as he heard Amelia's soft footsteps pounding against the ground when she ran towards him. There was nothing to worry about. A minor headache was worth the new interface he had unlocked.

"U-usually people don't break in here! P-promise!"

'Break in?' Nick was confused, wondering what she was even talking about.

And then a flash of lightning flew past his head and he knew exactly what was going on.

"Get out of here, deckhead! You really tried to rob my king?" Juliana screamed as she attacked Ivan, misunderstanding the whole situation.

A new text-to-speech function has been added. You can try clicking on the settings!
