Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Beginning of a Tyrant

Barely a moment after the words parted from his lips, inky darkness spread out from his outstretched arms in waves of misty dark energy before expanding to fully encapsulate the pack of charging wolves.

A moment of silence fell as everyone’s eyes widened slightly. They didn’t know the full magnitude of an S-rank talent.

But if his talent could already encapsulate a hundred-metre range, then it had to be freaking groundbreaking.

And as if to confirm that thought, from the mist of darkness up ahead, soul-rending howls echoed out.

The sound sent waves of fear down their spines, curiosity filling their eyes as they stared in wonder. What sort of attack would bring out this sort of reaction?

A few seconds slipped by in this state, and slowly the screeches began to die out. But the sense of fear in their eyes only grew instead of fading.

This could only mean one thing, and the realization was no less terrifying than the charging pack.

But they couldn’t be sure. Slowly, the darkness retreated, swallowed back into Ulric’s body.

And when the sight left behind came into view, a gasp slipped from Lyra, standing behind him.

And the crowd within the safe zone strained to see, but the damage was undeniable.

Where rows of level 1 grey wolves stood in a charging formation, there was nothing left but bones, their colours shifting to take on the darkness.

The level 5 wolves behind them were not spared either. Their forms were reduced to bones as well, the darkness having corroded their bodies.

Icy blue eyes fluttering rapidly, Lyra’s mouth opened and closed repeatedly as she struggled to process what had just happened.

"Was this the monstrosity of an S-rank talent?" she mumbled beneath her breath.

Just staring at Ulric, who had his back to her, sent shivers down her spine, but the longer she stared, the awe morphed as waves of excitement flooded her being.

The attraction to the green-robed figure skyrocketed. She had already loved Ulric when he was at his weakest, but now seeing him this strong in a world that only valued strength couldn’t help but fill her with satisfaction.

Unaware of the ripples he had just stirred with the display of power, Ulric exhaled softly as his eyes peered up ahead.

The level of destruction only matched the raging source of power burning within him. To a point, he supposed he had anticipated this.

Still, it came at a cost. A slight wave of fatigue washed over him.

But he discarded it instantly; this was only because he was weak. Once he awakened his class and leveled up to a point,

the cost of using his talent would be negligible.

His thoughts were cut short as guttural growls of pain echoed up ahead, causing his brows to furrow.

There was one that had survived? He had been too caught up in his thoughts; it had eluded him.

Increasing his pace, his eyes trailed over the pile of dark bones before falling on a beast at the far end.

It lay collapsed on the ground, towering a little over two and a half meters. A bit bigger than even the level 5 dark wolves.

Their leader? he mused. Whatever it was, he didn’t care. Its body was charred halfway from its lower torso.

Everything below was a pile of bones, leaving only its upper body. Dark blood pooled beneath it. Its fangs clamped repeatedly, white foam forming at the edge of its maw.

He could only imagine the world of pain it was experiencing. But that didn’t change how he viewed it. Maybe others might have shown a shard of pity. But he did not. If he wasn’t as strong as he was just now, then that would have been him on the other side.

Besides, if anything, he had deduced: compassion to one’s enemies was being ruthless to oneself.

The wolf tried to drag its body, a beastly vengeance flaring in its crystalline eyes in an attempt to bring him down with it.

But Ulric just stared down coldly, stretching his arms to unleash another wave of darkness to finish it off.

Before he suddenly stopped himself halfway. Just now, as he had unleashed the wave of darkness, he felt as if he were barely using a fraction of the potential of his Monarch of Darkness.

Reaching deep inside himself, he tried something else. When the darkness surged out of his arms, he didn’t let it encapsulate the wolf.

Waving his hand slightly, he stared at the mist of darkness as a figure came to mind, and slowly he willed the darkness to take it on.

A few seconds passed as beads of sweat dripped down his face, but he didn’t give up. The wave of darkness coiled endlessly before slowly coagulating and taking shape.

Seeing the sight, a chuckle slipped from his lips as his focus intensified.

A little while later, where the mist of darkness was, a one-metre blade hovered.

Its surface was soot black, waves of corruption energy drifting out of it despite its small frame.

The deathly energy it reeked was unmistakable. Unable to hold it anymore,

he flicked his wrist, and instantly after, the blade, following his command, drilled into the large grey wolf’s head before blowing it apart completely from the force.

The headless wolf collapsed lifelessly as Ulric watched giddily, a slow chuckle slipping from his lips.

"Nice."

He didn’t have time to be happy as immediately after, he felt a huge energy drain, his body straining to even stand.

Causing his hands to clench, a wave of discontentment flashed across his eyes. He was weak. Exceedingly weak.

He doubted if he hadn’t upgraded his physique to intermediate rank, his body could even have sustained unleashing the first attack.

Fighting against the wave of dizziness, he felt a pair of hands wrap around his waist, helping him remain steady.

He didn’t have to turn around to know who it was. Inhaling a sharp breath, a faint smile tugged at his lips as her voice echoed softly.

"I’m here." To protect him, just as she had promised. She was surprised he hadn’t collapsed yet from the first display of power, which went to show how strong he was.

A soothing wave of contentment washed over him as her words drifted into him while he pushed himself further.

Struggling against the fatigue, he tried one last thing as his Monarch of Darkness guided him.

Waves of familiar dark energy unfurled from him; he controlled it, letting it encapsulate the rows of piled bones.

This time, he didn’t just want to corrode them. He wanted his darkness to swallow them up. He had a feeling something good would come out of it.

A few seconds passed as the fatigue intensified, but he clawed his way through all of it.

Until everything had been consumed did he finally relent, his body now drenched in weakness.

But he forced himself awake, staring, waiting for anything. A few seconds passed, but nothing unfolded.

Just as he was about to lose hope, a stream of notifications flooded his vision, causing him to stare blankly.

"T-his," Ulric muttered, finally regaining his composure as a realization slammed into him. "The darkness can be anything... I want."

As his voice trailed over to Lyra, her eyes widened in wonder. She didn’t know what he meant. But as she clutched his frame tightly, one thing was certain.

A monstrous being had just been born.
