Transmigrating to the BeastWorld,I Picked Up an Adorable BeastHusband!-Chapter 35
Weijie, however, didn’t say anything.
He stood behind her, his presence like a cooling shadow against the heat of the afternoon.
His sharp golden eyes weren’t looking at Jaren. They were fixed entirely on the back of Ningning’s head.
Unlike the other men, Weijie wasn’t easily blinded. He had been standing right there.
His senses were far too keen to miss the subtle flick of her wrist or the way she had shielded Jaren’s face from view.
He had even caught the faint metallic scent of the liquid she had forced into the dying man’s mouth.
He knew there was no god involved in those drops.
But as he watched the way Numa and the others looked at her—with a dangerous kind of worship—he realized it wasn’t safe for her to tell the truth.
"The Human God has answered," Weijie said suddenly, his deep voice slicing through the murmurs and ending the interrogation.
He stepped forward, his large hand sliding possessively around Ningning’s waist, pulling her back against his chest.
"But my female is completely drained from the ritual. She needs to rest."
"..."
He didn’t wait for a reply. He led her out of the resting cave, his stride long and protective.
The evening sun was still bright, casting long, sharp shadows across the rocky path as they walked back to their space.
Weijie didn’t speak until they were well away from the others. He stopped near a high ledge and turned her to face him.
His expression was unreadable, but his eyes burned with an intense, quiet curiosity.
"The Human God, Ningning?" he murmured, a small, knowing smirk playing on his lips.
He reached out, his thumb lightly brushing her bottom lip.
"You’re a very mysterious little female. I saw what you did. You didn’t just ’call’ him back, did you?"
Ningning looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. "I have no idea what you’re talking about." she muttered, trying to keep a straight face. "It was... totally a miracle. One hundred percent supernatural."
[Yeah right. Like he’s going to believe that. Keep denying it to the end—he already knows there’s no human god.] Doudou sniggered.
"..."
Weijie chuckled, the sound a low vibration in his chest. "Sure. And I’m a bear beastman. We’ll talk about your ’miracles’ later, when we’re alone."
The sun still beat down on the stone walkways as Weijie led Ningning away from the resting cave.
However, they didn’t get far before the path was blocked.
Runa and Ayres stood there, their towering frames casting long shadows.
Given the chaos, the traditional rule that the "invited" and the "bonded" remain separate had clearly been tossed out the window.
Ayres looked skeptical, arms crossed over his massive chest, while Runa’s sharp eyes fixed on Ningning with newfound intensity.
"I heard the shouting," Runa said, her voice like grinding stones. "They’re saying the male is breathing again. That she... did something."
Weijie tightened his grip on Ningning’s waist, his posture shifting into something protective and slightly aggressive.
"The Human God answered her," he said shortly, using the lie Ningning had spun as a shield. "That’s all you need to know, Runa."
Ayres grunted, his gaze shifting to Weijie. "You always did have more luck than sense, Snake. But if she can really pull men back from the grave, you’d better hide her well."
The exchange was brief—just enough to acknowledge the "miracle" without breaking too many protocols.
Weijie was eager to get Ningning back to the privacy of their cave, but as they moved to pass, a group of females led by Xiaoli intercepted them.
"Weijie! Wait!" Xiaoli called, her eyes bright with excitement. "You can’t take her back yet. It’s a big feast night because of the guests, and we need Ningning to join us in the cooking circles today."
Weijie’s face immediately darkened. He looked like a child being told his favorite toy was being put away.
"She’s tired," he grumbled, his possessive streak flaring. "The ’ritual’ took a lot out of her."
"Oh, stop being so clingy," one of the other women teased, giggling. "She needs to spend time with us, not just stare at your face all day. Go on, head back to the cave. We’ll take care of her."
Weijie looked down at Ningning. He clearly wanted to refuse, but he caught the look in her eyes—a mix of curiosity and a genuine desire to do something other than be carried around.
He sighed, the sound heavy with dramatic reluctance.
"Fine," he muttered, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. He ignored the snickers from the other women. "But come back early. If it even starts to get dark and you aren’t home, stay exactly where you are. Don’t move a muscle. I’ll come get you myself, okay?"
Ningning rolled her eyes, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I’m just going to the cooking pits, Weijie. It’s like fifty yards away. I’ll be fine."
"Fifty yards is fifty yards too many," he countered, his voice dropping into that low, cutesy-but-serious tone.
He squeezed her hand one last time before finally letting go.
As Xiaoli and the others pulled Ningning away toward the communal fires, Weijie stood there for a long moment, watching her back.
Finally, he turned toward the cave, his mind already spinning with questions about the silver liquid.
The cooking area was a hive of activity.
Huge stone pots were being prepped, and the scent of roasting meat and wild tubers filled the air.
Ningning was ushered to a spot beside Xiaoli, who immediately handed her a sharp stone tool for slicing vegetables.
"So," Xiaoli whispered, leaning in close as soon as they were settled, "tell us the truth. Was it really a god, or did you just give Jaren a really hard slap?"
Ningning laughed, feeling more relaxed now that she was away from the high-stakes drama of the men.
"Let’s just say I have a very loud voice, and the spirits decided to listen so I’d stop bothering them. It was... intense."
"I bet," another woman added, tossing a handful of herbs into a pot. "But you should’ve seen the look on Weijie’s face when we took you away. I thought he was going to start hissing at us."
"He’s just... protective," Ningning said, focusing on her slicing.
