Chapter 2011: Chapter 2019: Spending the Night in the Suburb (Part 5)

Right then, I hired a horse carriage and personally took them to Nong’an County.

Their luggage as master and servant was very little, almost leaving with nothing but their bodies. Miss Yanran only brought some things left by their Mother for the siblings, and she didn’t take a single item from Dong Mansion. So, just one carriage was more than sufficient to carry them all.

As the carriage moved through the market, Miss Yanran suggested buying some sacrificial offerings to visit her Mother’s burial site and pay respects.

I knew they were living under Princess Zhao Qing’s hand and surely didn’t have much Money, so I helped them buy the best incense, candles, paper horse, fruits, and the three domestic animals, loading them onto their carriage all at once.

Yanran’s Mother’s burial ground was not in the Dong Family ancestral grave because according to rules, concubines had no right to enter the ancestral grave. It was hastily buried at the foot of the Mountain near the familial cemetery, without a Tombstone. A half-dead small tree was planted as a marker at the grave!

The siblings saw their Mother’s grave so simplistic, they cried bitterly and uncontrollably, Yanran cried to the verge of passing out. She lay on her Mother’s grave, heartbreakingly calling "Mother," crying so helplessly and pitiably, even I was moved and felt sorrow along with them.

They stayed at the cemetery for a long time until Noon, barely able to stop their Tears, and under the assistance of Nanny Zhang, they boarded the carriage. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Having delayed so long, we had to hurry and make haste; otherwise, we couldn’t enter Nong’an County’s County Town by nightfall.

Once out of Tongzhou Prefecture, we reached the Suburb, roads were clear, and few horse carriages passed by. The horse carriage carrying Yanran and the two others began our journey again. Nong’an is about a hundred miles from Tongzhou, and if everything was normal, we would make it to Dong’an County before they close the gates at nightfall.

However, after the horse carriage ran over twenty miles, Yanran’s Younger Brother suddenly felt unwell.

The little one had been living through alternate days of hunger and satiety in Dong Mansion, then struck with the bereavement of Mother’s death, and his tiny body was constantly weak. Today, after being shaken by the horse carriage, the little body couldn’t take it anymore; he felt nauseous and dizzy.

I immediately urged the Coachman to slow down and opened the carriage curtains to let the wind blow inside. Slowly, the little one gradually felt better. But the carriage couldn’t speed up. Whenever we went fast, the little one felt dizzy and nauseous, terribly uncomfortable.

With such stops and starts, by the time nightfall arrived, we were only halfway through the journey.

"Looks like we can’t get into the town, tonight we will have to spend the night in the wild."

I looked at the completely darkened sky and let the Coachman stop the carriage, unharness the horse, letting the three of them sleep in the carriage; the Coachman and I also found some hay nearby, planning to cope for a night outside and continue traveling at Daybreak.

Miss Yanran felt very uneasy seeing me had to sleep Outside because of them, right away helped me gather hay, and found many dry branches to let me light a bonfire for warmth.

With the bonfire lit, the flickering firelight gradually rose, Yanran took out a few cakes and eggs from the carriage, letting me and the Coachman roast and eat outside.

Afraid we would choke on just eating cakes and eggs, she even specifically went to the Creekside to fetch a kettle of water, boiling it on the bonfire, soaking a pot of tea for us to drink.

The Coachman was an honest old man, he saw Yanran busy back and forth for me, secretly saying to me, "Young Master, if this humble one may say, this girl is definitely virtuous and deserving of a household, Young Master must not miss it!"

Inexplicably, my heart moved a bit, unconsciously looking toward Yanran’s direction. Only to see her patiently toasting cakes for her Younger Brother, that lowered brow and tranquil appearance, truly stirring the heart!
