It was late afternoon when Liu Man came to the north gate as she promised, to meet up with Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina. She was going to treat them to dinner at Ju Jiu Wu.
Before then, Liu Man was never the eminent one in this school filled with talented students. But now that her video with Coco on Tik Tok suddenly made her become a famous person, there were lots of people who recognized her in the crowds of students.
When there were groups of two and three walking past her, there would always be one of them who recognized her. She or he would then turn around and tell their friends with great excitement, so everyone would look at Liu Man.
“Isn’t she the one from our school who’s in that Tik Tok video?”
“Yeah, yeah, it’s her! She doesn’t look different at all from herself in the video. She’s so pretty.”
“Haha, I think she looks even better than herself in the video. But the video made her seem very tall, probably because Coco’s too short.”
“I don’t think she’s short, she’s probably at least 168 centimeters.”
“I heard that she’s the prettiest in the entire piano major.”
“Then why haven’t we seen her in any performances?”
“Her scores aren’t good. What’s the use of being pretty if you don’t pass exams?” Then came some laughter of humiliation.
Since she got in college, there were finally this many people who recognized her. Ninety percent of the passersby population turned around to look at her, and the ten percent who didn’t were short-sighted, and it was getting dark.
Liu Man had no choice but to circle around to hide behind a large oak tree outside the school gate to evade the gazes and discussions from the crowds. The sudden attention didn’t make her feel satisfied or honored at all, for most of these crowds were just trying to be on-lookers and see something fresh.
Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina still hadn’t arrived. Liu Man took out her phone to check the time. Suddenly, a group of people ran past her and encompassed two people. Then, came loud screaming and boisterous chatting.
Two girls walked past Liu Man and were surprised as they saw this happening, “Wow, so many journalists! The person in the middle must be Tang Tu.”
“Yeah, it’s him. I see him! He and Shen Mozhen are both there.”
TL’s Note: Reminder that Shen Mozhen’s Tang Tu’s girlfriend.
“Ooh, this rarely happens. Let’s go and have a look. Maybe we could get a good spot and get on the news too.”
The two girls sprinted over, giggling.
If the attention towards Liu Man was just a diversion to pass the time, then the attention paid towards Tang Tu was serious idol business. Liu Man saw the microphones held in the journalists’ hands, the cameras on the photographers’ shoulders, along with fans who weren’t even from their school.
The stern and peaceful environment around the north gate suddenly became something like a party. There were crowds of people running past and trying to get a look, and the cars going beside the north gate had to stop.
It could easily be seen how famous Tang Tu was.
When Liu Man signed up for a new Weibo account, she went to check on Tang Tu’s Weibo account. He had over eight million fans! Eight million! It was a number Liu Man didn’t even dare to think about.
Shen Mozhen finished her last class today as a college student. She only needed to prepare for her graduation performance and essays in order to graduate. Tang Tu came to pick her up and treat her to dinner to celebrate her successful passing of exams. He wasn’t aware someone disclosed his agenda and drew all these journalists.
To be honest, Tang Tu didn’t have such an exaggerated amount of popularity before.
The news that Ye Zian was going to film a new movie slipped out, although the officials had tried to keep it as secret as possible. All of the media wanted to be the first to give the newest and best information. There were rumors that Tang Tu was picked for the second male lead of this movie, and so the journalists who couldn’t reach Ye Zian paid all their attention to Tang Tu.
“Are you really going to take part in the new movie that Ye Zian is going to direct?”
“Can you talk about how you think about this movie and its background?”
“It is rumored that Galaxy Films has invested in this movie. Have you signed a contract with Galaxy Films?”
…
Facing the journalists’ questions, Tang Tu merely smiled. He paid most of his attention to protecting Shen Mozhen, who was standing beside him. He covered her face with his hands, afraid that the flashing lights of the cameras would scare her.
The journalists were, of course, interested in his relationship with his girlfriend as well.
“Are you and Miss Shen living together already?”
“Is Miss Shen planning on entering the entertainment circle when she graduates?”
“Have you two met each other’s parents?”
…
In response to these questions, Tang Tu had been very silent. He waited until his agent came with bodyguards, and separated a path through the crowds so that he and Shen Mozhen could get on the Alphard. From the beginning, Tang Tu didn’t talk at all, and Shen Mozhen had lowered her head as well, trying to cover up her face with her long hair.
TL’s Note: Alphard is a type of car if Google didn’t tell you that already. Toyota Alphard, I believe, right?
When the crowds disassembled, Liu Man finally saw Li Xiaoru and Wang Nina. They were in the crowd and watching too. It was the first time they’ve seen this many journalists and fans, so they were astonished.
Li Xiaoru waved at Liu Man enthusiastically, and the trio met up. Li Xiaoru said, “I’ve never seen this many journalists. Tang Tu seems to be getting more popular.”
“He’s the second male lead in Ye Zian’s film. He would become popular, even if he doesn’t want to become popular.”
Wang Nina felt from her heart, that compared to normal students like her, Tang Tu seemed to be standing on top of the mountain peak, while they were standing at the bottom of the mountain. They could only raise their heads and admire him, and that’s all they could do. Maybe if they fought hard, then they would be able to reach Tang Tu’s peak one day. But when that day came, Tang Tu would already be on another higher peak.
Wang Nina felt unjustified, “We’re all in the same school, and we all study classical western music. Nobody plays the instrument better, but he’s beyond one’s reach.”
“I don’t think he’s beyond our reach. Remember last time, when Manman fainted, he rushed over and helped? He was just like a normal boy and showed pragmatic feelings; he was ardent and worried. In addition, he treated Shen Mozhen very well a few moments ago. He was trying hard to protect her and tried not to let the crowd bump into her. He didn’t even let the journalists film her. He looks like such a great boyfriend! I’m so jealous of Shen Mozhen.”
Li Xiaoru was always very positive and saw everything on the good aspect.
Wang Nina gave a disdainful, “So what?”
Liu Man didn’t talk at all. Tang Tu’s Alphard parked right beside her oak tree back then. Tang Tu’s agent and bodyguards came with him and Shen Mozhen to the car, and when they were sure nobody else could see them, Tang Tu took his hand out of Shen Mozhen’s and got onto the car first. Shen Mozhen was the last to get on.
Liu Man had never had a boyfriend before, no matter in this life or her past life. She didn’t know how couples treated each other, but she did know that two thousand years ago, people said lively and elegant young men know how to be modest and courteous and that this world liked men who were gentle. Tang Tu didn’t seem to be a gentleman for Shen Mozhen.
“But Manman is half a cyber star now. The Tik Tok video she was in totally went on fire in our major. Haha, nobody expected you to fit that well into a Hanfu, like it was real,” Li Xiaoru drove the topic back onto Liu Man, “You should go cosplay characters and pretend to be those Ancient Chinese. Maybe you could mimick Diao Chan or Wang Zhaojun. You would probably look a lot like them!”
TL’s Note: Diao Chan is one of the famous four beauties of Chinese history, and was the wife of General Lu Bu back in the period of the three kingdoms. Wang Zhaojun was also one of the four beauties of Ancient China and was a servant in the palace who married the king of a foreign kingdom instead of the princesses
Liu Man joked, “I could probably try being Wang Zhaojun.”
She had met Wang Zhaojun before when she was just a child.
“Alright, alright. Aren’t you guys feeling hungry? Let’s go have dinner, I’m starving,” Wang Nina rubbed her stomach, “Let’s make Manman’s wallet empty today.”
“I prepared a lot of cash today, as long as you guys can eat it all,” Liu Man exchanged all of the money she earned from the presents her fans gave during her live-streams and the money she earned from selling AJs into cash. She had a bit more than thirty-thousand. She felt great with money in her pockets.
The trio chatted and giggled as they walked toward Ju Jiu Wu.
When Liu Man opened the menu, there was a moment of hesitation which she had, for she wasn’t sure what she should order. If the music-themed restaurant Yu Zhan took her to yesterday was for regular citizens, then this Ju Jiu Wu was definitely for rich customers. Almost every dish costed a price of three digits.
Li Xiaoru flipped through the entire menu and hesitated as she told Liu Man, “Let’s… Change a restaurant?”
Wang Nina disagreed, “The waitress has already placed all of the utensils, and we already received our tea. People would laugh at us if we walked out now.”
“But… Everything’s so expensive here, and we are all poor students,” Li Xiaoru whispered as she poked Wang Nina.
Liu Man answered, “I said that I was going to treat you to dinner once I have more than one hundred fans, and I won’t back out now. Pick whatever you want, I have enough money.”
“Manman’s generous,” Wang Nina always thought that Liu Man’s family was very rich. Firstly, whenever she bought something, she always used a lot of money. Secondly, she had bought so many AJs. A rich daughter should be able to treat them to dinner.
“I’m done,” Wang Nina announced.
“So quickly?” Li Xiaoru opened her menu to look again and chose two dishes that were slightly cheaper.
And Liu Man only ordered a bowl of ramen.
Although the price was very expensive, there was no denying that each dish was placed in a delicate manner. None of them started eating, and when everything was served, Wang Nina and Li Xiaoru took a photo of each dish and sent them on moments.
TL’s Note: Moments is WeChat’s Instagram posting feature.
Li Xiaoru sent: “Thanks to my lovely Manman, who’s as pretty as an angel, we have a chance to taste the delectable dishes here,” She then placed nine pictures below the caption.
Wang Nina wrote: “I’m here tonight,” With the location of Ju Jiu Wu and similar nine pictures attached.
Liu Man liked both of their posts.
When she received the bill, she discovered that the dishes they had ordered costed almost a thousand RMB.
