Chapter 16: Chapter Sixteen

"What is he going to do about it?" Camilla asked herself in her mind, completely dismissing his invisible protests. "He cannot run away. His leg is broken. He is stuck in that chair."

She slowly moved her eyes away from his face and looked toward the fireplace. She looked at the young, ordinary-looking guard standing there.

"And Kade over there," Camilla thought, returning her gaze to Damon. "Kade is way too loyal to stab a woman just for kissing her own husband. He would just stand there and watch like a confused statue. No one is going to stop me."

Damon felt his breath catch in his throat. She had analyzed the battlefield perfectly. She knew exactly what his weaknesses were. She knew his men would not attack her for a simple kiss. She had cornered him with perfect military precision.

"Yes," Camilla decided finally. "I think I will kiss him. Just one quick bite to see what the Tyrant General tastes like before I throw him away forever."

Camilla tilted her head slightly to the side. She closed her eyes halfway. She leaned forward just one more inch.

Her face was so close to his that he could feel the warmth of her breath against his skin. Her lips were dangerously close to his. He could see the individual eyelashes on her eyelids.

Damon completely panicked.

His survival instincts kicked in hard. His brain sent a massive wave of adrenaline through his blood. In his entire life of fighting bloody wars, facing charging horses, and dodging deadly arrows, he had never felt this specific kind of sheer, helpless terror. He did not know how to fight this kind of enemy. You cannot punch your wife when she is trying to kiss you in your own drawing room.

He had to break the silence. He had to stop her before her lips touched his.

"Kade!" Damon yelled out loud.

His voice was supposed to be a deep, terrifying roar. But because his throat was dry and his heart was panicking, his voice cracked loudly in the silent room. It sounded high-pitched, panicked, and utterly desperate. It sounded like a man who was about to fall off a tall cliff.

The sudden, loud shout shattered the quiet atmosphere of the room like a hammer hitting glass.

Kade jumped violently in surprise. The young aide had been standing quietly by the fireplace, respectfully looking at the floor to give the couple some privacy. When he heard his General scream his name with such raw panic, his military training took over instantly.

Kade thought the General was under attack. He thought an invisible assassin had somehow snuck into the room.

Kade’s hand flew to the handle of his sword. In one smooth, blindingly fast motion, he drew the heavy steel blade halfway out of its metal sheath.

SHING!

The sharp, high ringing sound of the steel sword filled the air. The sound echoed off the stone walls and the glass cabinets. By the heavy oak doors, the other four guards instantly snapped to attention. They lowered their long spears, pointing the sharp metal tips toward the center of the room, ready to fight and die for their Lord.

"Yes, General!" Kade shouted back at the top of his lungs. He spun around, his face twisted into a fierce mask of anger. He looked around wildly, his eyes darting to the dark corners, the high bookshelves, and the heavy curtains. He was searching frantically for an enemy hiding in the shadows.

Camilla stopped. She did not jump. She just simply stopped leaning forward.

She opened her eyes completely. She blinked twice. Her long eyelashes fluttered softly.

She slowly stood up straight. She carefully removed her small, pale hands from the wooden armrests of his wheelchair. She took one neat step backward, putting a polite amount of space between them. She smoothed down the front of her light blue dress with her hands, looking completely calm and undisturbed by the shouting and the drawn weapons.

She looked down at Damon. She tilted her head slightly to the left. She put on an expression of pure, innocent confusion. She widened her eyes and parted her lips just a tiny bit, looking like a confused little bird. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"My Lord?" Camilla asked out loud. Her voice was incredibly soft, sweet, and perfectly polite. It was the voice of a gentle, caring wife. "Is everything alright? Why are you shouting?"

Inside her head, however, she was losing her mind with laughter.

"Look at him!" Camilla thought, highly amused by the absolute chaos she had just caused with a simple lean forward. Her internal voice was rolling on the floor, laughing uncontrollably.

"He looks like a frightened little rabbit!" she thought happily. "He yelled for his personal guard to save him just because I got a little close to his face! I did not even touch him!"

She looked at the guards pointing their spears, and Kade holding his half-drawn sword.

"So much for the big, scary, undefeated Tyrant General," Camilla continued her mental mocking. "The whole kingdom is terrified of this man, and he almost cried because his wife tried to kiss him. He is actually quite shy and pure. He must be a virgin. How incredibly adorable. I almost feel bad for teasing him. Almost."

Damon was breathing heavily. His chest rose and fell rapidly under his dark red shirt. He stared at her. He listened to her laughing at him inside his own head. He could hear her calling him a frightened little rabbit.

He felt a deep, hot wave of embarrassment wash over his entire body. He had just screamed for his guard in front of all his men because a woman leaned in too close. He, the great Lord Damon Benson, had lost his composure completely.

He took a deep, shaky breath, trying desperately to calm his racing heart. He needed to gain control of the situation. He turned his head slowly and looked at Kade.

Kade was still standing there, holding his sword tightly. The young aide looked extremely confused. He looked at the General, who was red in the face and clutching papers to his chest. Then he looked at Lady Camilla, who was standing peacefully with her hands clasped in front of her. There was no threat.

"General?" Kade asked slowly, his voice full of confusion. He started to slowly push his sword back into its metal sheath. Click. The sword locked into place. "Is... is everything alright?"
