Chapter 106: A Special Gift For Special Beasts

Lan Meishan’s expression immediately shifted. "Ningyan. Don’t."

But Ningyan only shook his head, gritting his teeth.

Without hesitation, he lifted the boy into his arms, ignoring the blood that stained his white robes. He carried him inside and sat him gently on the bed before crouching in front of him.

He cupped the boy’s face softly. "Stay here, alright?"

The boy blinked, pressing his lips together. "Hm."

Ningyan didn’t know him well. He was simply one of the children who liked to follow him around. Sometimes Ningyan taught them little things like songs, stories, or how to write simple characters but he had never even asked their names.

He had always liked children.

In his previous life, he had been a kindergarten teacher.

"What is your name?" Ningyan asked softly.

"Hai Miao," the boy whispered.

"Alright, Hai Miao."

Ningyan rubbed his temples, trying to steady his thoughts. Then he looked toward Lan Meishan, who had been silently watching them.

Ningyan trusted him completely.

But he was afraid.

Afraid Meishan might get hurt.

Afraid that if that happened, the other side of him would emerge.

And... Ningyan was beginning to fall in love with the divine beast prince.

Who wouldn’t?

"Promise me you won’t get hurt," Ningyan said quietly.

Lan Meishan’s emerald serpent eyes glowed faintly. "I promise."

"Take him," Ningyan said.

He stood up, facing Meishan. "Take Xiao-Miao and leave this place."

His expression hardened. "I’m the one the assassin wants."

"And when he finds me..." Ningyan’s eyes burned with cold fury. "I’ll rip his heart from his chest."

Lan Meishan swallowed hard as he looked at the fury burning in Ningyan’s eyes.

Of course Ningyan was angry.

He had tried so hard to choose peace. He had built a quiet life here, far from the academy, far from the fate that had always been forced upon him.

For once, he had been free.

Free from being bound to beasts. Free from being used.

He had told himself many times that he wasn’t a hero. That he didn’t want to rescue or unite any beastkind.

He just wanted peace.

Yet even that had been taken from him.

And now innocent beasts were dying because of him.

The memory of the academy surfaced in his mind. How Rong Chen had once used him as bait to lure humans into a deadly trap.

This felt the same.

Because of him...

Ningyan clenched his teeth and walked past Meishan.

"I should have gone to live on some remote mountain," he muttered bitterly.

Meishan hurried after him. "Ningyan, wait."

Ningyan stopped and turned back, looking at him with a pleading expression.

"Please," he said quietly. "Just do this for me. I promise you... I can handle myself."

Lan Meishan didn’t look convinced.

Ningyan frowned slightly. "I’m not a damsel in distress."

"I just..."

Before Meishan could finish, Ningyan stepped forward and grabbed his face, squishing his cheeks until his lips formed a pout.

"Do you trust me, Lan Meishan?"

"With all my heart," Meishan replied, ignoring the way his lips were being pushed together.

"Then do this for me," Ningyan said gently. "Take Xiao-Miao somewhere safe. I’ll come find you both as soon as I can."

Meishan fell silent, clearly thinking.

Finally, he let out a slow breath.

"Okay."

Warmth spread through Ningyan’s chest.

He released Meishan and immediately turned away, running at full speed.

Meishan watched him until he disappeared into the darkness.

Then he inhaled deeply and returned to the house.

Inside, Hai Miao sat on the bed, sobbing as he stared at the blood covering his clothes.

Meishan noticed the black scales along the side of the boy’s neck and blinked slowly.

He had absolutely no idea how to comfort a crying child.

After a moment of awkward hesitation, he simply walked forward and lifted the boy into his arms.

"We have to leave now," he said softly.

And with that, he carried Hai Miao out of the house. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Meanwhile, Ningyan ran through the lower district. The metallic scent of blood hung thick in the air as he stepped the bodies scattered across the ground.

Some were severed. Most of them were women and children.

Ningyan clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. Tears burned behind his eyes, but he forced them back.

He followed the direction of the corrupted energy pulsing through the air.

Then he stopped suddenly.

The old granny who often greeted him near the market lay on the ground.

Dead.

Ningyan’s hands trembled with rage.

He swallowed hard and forced himself to move forward.

Then he saw him.

The jaguar beastman.

He calmly drove his sword down into the skull of another beastman who had been begging for his life.

"oh?" he suddenly turned his head.

His pulsing red feline eyes met Ningyan’s.

With a casual motion, he pulled his sword free from the body beneath him. Blood splattered across the ground as he rose, a slow smile spreading across his face while he looked Ningyan up and down.

"Su Ningyan," he said smoothly. "Even the sketches in the parchments do your beauty no justice."

He stepped forward slightly, examining him more carefully.

The beastman was enormous with broad shoulders packed with muscle. Dirty golden hair swayed in the wind, and a terrible scar twisted across the side of his face. When he smiled, it was nothing but fangs.

"Do you know how long I’ve been searching for you?" he continued lazily. "It’s fortunate my connections are so reliable. They stretch all the way to Water City. People are very willing to talk when you offer them enough spirit crystals."

Ningyan didn’t respond.

The thick scent of blood in the air only fueled the rage burning in his chest. Bodies surrounded them. Families, innocents.

"Hmm?" the beastman chuckled. "Not a friendly look. Is this about the little mess I made?"

He gestured vaguely at the corpses around them.

"I apologize, but the demon tool requires blood to recharge. And once it recharges, it strengthens me." He lifted his sword slightly, admiring the red veins pulsing through the blade. "A special gift for special beasts like me."

His eyes glinted. "And I happen to be the kind of beast who will do anything for the generous bounty on your pretty head."

"Quiet." Ningyan’s voice was cold, his eyes suddenly flaring with a brilliant white-gold glow.

At once, his entire body ignited with the same blazing light.

The assassin frowned slightly.

"Why don’t we introduce ourselves first?" he said casually. "I am Mu Yi. And you—"

"I said quiet!" Ningyan’s shout exploded with fury.

A massive phoenix made of white-gold flames erupted behind him, its wings spreading wide across the night sky. The air trembled as waves of violent spiritual energy surged outward.

Mu Yi’s eyes widened. "This—"

He actually stumbled back.

"I wasn’t promised this," he muttered. "They said you were weak. Only stage four of beast cultivation."

A wild, almost manic smile slowly formed on Ningyan’s lips. "Of course they did."

He raised a single hand.

The phoenix screeched. A sound so sharp it cut through the night like a living creature.

Then it surged forward. Straight toward Mu Yi.
